It's Olympian Yusra Mardini and her sister's story. I know the film will streamline a few bits, but mostly it's all real and raw - I haven't seen the film obviously, but I researched her story for a project, and the sisters literally swam for hours to bring their boat to shore. I am not a swimmer, but even I know that swimming in a heated pool in proper gear is a completely different experience to swimming in the freezing open sea, wearing normal clothes, and maybe even extra layers that all weigh you down. These sisters are heroes and I am so glad their story is coming light at last.

@@Buttercup697 Thank you! I posted a reply to explain that with reference to Harvard Centre for Hellenic Studies, but that's not showing up (weird - maybe because I put a link). But basically, I used the greek reference, because firstly, like you said, mortals with legendary, heroic capability, and also secondly, because Yusra went on to become an Olympian, so again hat tip to that. when I heard about their story in the radio in Greece I was still a student. I won't forget how my mom broke down in tears and there was silence... these two girls gave voice to so many people and inspired us to fight for refugee rights! “Swimmers” is an excellent movie based on the true story of 2 young, female Syrian refugees who travel a gruelling and exhausting journey from war torn Syria to Berlin. They encounter all kinds of hardships including fraud, corruption, neglect, violence and loss - all concepts that young girls should never be exposed to. Despite all that, they rise above these negative life experiences to represent their family and their country in a positive way.

More than inspiring - enlightening. When studying for my MA I used to swim in a downtown swimming pool for exercise & stress relief. One day I said to the person next to me "Feels better afterwards". He replied, "Yes, I swim for freedom." I then replied "Yes, it makes me feel free also", thinking his language might be not so good. "No, he said, "I swim for freedom - I swam from Mainland China south to freedom, near Hong Kong"! I looked at him with renewed respect and congratulated him. And always enter the water now with renewed appreciation!!

They have shed a light on an issue that has been in the dark for far too long. An inspiration to millions, literally saving lives and giving people a chance of a future, a chance of life. Millions of refugees around the world are struggling and millions more will unfortunately meet the same fate. It's time to join their cause and for every single one of us to contribute to humanity. I hope to have the courage and will they have to dedicate my life to helping others. I would be blessed and grateful to someday meet the Mardini sisters.

I'm so glad Netflix made this, so the whole world will know what's happening in Syria and Middle East instead of just focusing on Ukraine and ignoring everything else.

Watched this yesterday. An excellent film in every way. Also a timely reminder that people are people living similar lives all over the world and war is an incongruous thing that happens to us, usually as a result of the actions of a handful of stupid men. We want to stay in the countries we grew up in. We want to live peaceful lives.

Life as an immigrant is difficult, as a refugee even more difficult. I went to another country as a student. As long as I was a student I was cool in the eyes of people. When I finished the degree and I decided to stay I was just an immigrant who is stealing the job of locals, who shouldn’t have an opinion or a saying on anything. If we don’t like how we are treated we should just go home. I feel like if you have never been a foreigner in another country, you can’t understand the struggle. No one leaves their country with joy. It’s the hardest decision ever, one you wish you didn’t have to do, but you look for better future, better education for your children, better opportunities. Immigrants, refugees deserve dignity and not treated like trash.

It's Yusra Mardini and her sister's story.

Unfortunately I didn’t heard about these sisters before, the movie is very harsh and true , I don’t know if that’s the regular route to Europe or they compressed all routes in one , the suffering of these human beings won’t go easily on the humans history, big thanks to everyone who worked on this masterpiece 🙏
