Great pack, but the straps leave a lot to be desired. I mounted mine on a MOLLE 2 rucksack frame and it brings the pack to a whole new level.

I have the Swiss Army Military Combat Heavy Duty Large Waterproof OD Green Mountain Engineer Rucksack. It makes for a great truck bag for the winter. I'm going going to look into the M90. I really like the side pouches and thick padding. Good introduction video. Thanks.

The weight lop lifters you are mentioning are for attaching your backpack on your trouser belt !!! or if it happens to have a Swiss army field trousers you will find two metal rings that you can attach them to. To all of you that you have not serve in any kind of army I have to tel you this. Army equipment ALWAYS attaches to something ... "loop lifters" do not exist in military equipment... handles and attachments yes .. loop lifters nope !

Nice. Very cool video. Here's a tip for narrow shoulder pack straps. In the auto parts arena, there are soft padded velcro units that are designed to go over the car seat belt "shoulder strap" portion of that system. My wife is short and the shoulder strap comes across her neck and that is a real irritant. For just a few bucks I bought one of the padded units, simply opened it up, wrapped it over the shoulder strap and secured it using the velcro. You can adjust the positioning by simply sliding it up or down on the strap. These units work well for most of the time when one has narrow straps on any carry item, from sling bags to back packs. I don't remember the marketing name. But, just explain to the person behind the counter that you need to pad the shoulder strap on your auto seat belt system and you should be good to go. ;)

+Charles Larson Thank you for the kind words, Charles! I appreciate the tip! I don't use this pack as often as some of the others, so the thin straps don't bother me too bad, when I take it out. I will definitely keep the "seatbelt straps" in mind, though! Very nice to hear from you, my friend! -Dave

+HighCarbonSteel Love Well....if you want to, pass the tip on. I've seen a lot of very serviceable bags/pouches etc...that need better comfort from poorly designed shoulder straps. It's an inexpensive fix. :)

Thanks for that review on the M90 Swiss Army pack. I just ordered mine from Keepshooting.com it came to about 30 bucks w/ shipping. I definitely see potential need to either add padding to the straps,. Or maybe try to replace 'em with upgraded Alice straps. Another reviewer had a comment from a former Swiss soldier who was saying this pack is to be used w/ a web harness, but I don't see any info in the Net about the proper Swiss web harness this pack mates to. I already have US Y and H style web harness straps, pistol belts, and a Austrian Butt pack with a great 6 strap shoulder web harness. I'll play with all this to see if this cool Swiss pack could integrate w/ any of that gear. Again, thanks for the great review! Cheers!

I found this same pack for $25 at a flea market a few months ago and wasn't really sure what I had... as it's not labeled anywhere as being a M90. But after searching the internet and youtube videos, yep, I appear to have this same pack. It's really big inside when opened up... bigger than my other packs. I'm not a fan of a different pack...the large ALICE pack... as when it's loaded to my max hauling ability of around 70 lbs., its external frame puts uncomfortable pressure on my kidney area of my lower back. I'm not sure if this Swiss pack could haul that much weight if I lined the inside with a plastic trash can like I did with the ALICE pack. I really don't think I'll push myself to the limit again. It wasn't fun. Somehow those younger dudes in the military seem able to manage that kind of weight and more. I had to look at other youtube vids to figure out how these young dudes strap on such heavy packs... as without having proper technique, that kind of weight is almost impossible to stand up with if you set them on the ground and lay on them with your back to them in order to strap the pack on. (don't ask me how I know) Mostly, I'm glad that this Swiss pack didn't have a hidden tag somewhere that said "made in China"... as I'm not really desiring lead-poisoning from their mystery fabrics. I really hope to enjoy this Swiss pack... as it's pretty frequent in summer to encounter a pop up rain storm... gotta keep the gear dry !
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
That was an excellent find, my friend! I have other packs that I use more but I definitely enjoy this one and you are right...perfect for a pop up rain storm. Great video Dave. By the way, do you have any idea how to install a PVC pack frame to a Swiss M90? A couple of years ago, I bought an army pack similar to this one at a flea market. Back then I didn't have any idea what to look for when buying a day pack. I bought it because it was cheap at 300 pesos or less that 10 dollars. Now that I am into bushcrafting, I saw similar backpacks and the most popular ones are the Alice packs. Back then, my issue with the pack is that it sits uncomfortably almost at my lower back. If I tighten it, the weight is not evenly distributed and I get discomfort around my upper back. Watching the videos on youtube, the solution is to have an external pack frame to evenly distribute the load and add lumbar support. I wasn't able to come across a video on adding PVC pack frames on non-Alice packs. Mine also has 2 back cushions so I think it would be a bit tricky to install a PVC pack frame to it.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words and excellent question, my friend! I don't work with PVC but I will see what I can do with making a Roycroft pack frame for this one in the woods. I haven't used it enough to think about a pack frame but you bring up an excellent point. Another one of my subs asked a similar question so I think its time for a video on the subject..haha! I appreciate you stopping by and look forward to talking with you again soon! -Dave
@buenjosefandrade812
@buenjosefandrade812 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! Yeah, a Roycroft pack frame would also be nice. I already bought a 3/4 PVC pipe but I still lack the elbow and t-pipe fittings. I also bought some 1 1/2 inch straps but I somehow need to figure out how to put a strap where the PVC pack frame will sit. Will also have the straps sewn at our local seamstress. Hopefully I can post a video response here or send a photo of the thing.

attach what you call load the lifters to your belt, sort of what you would do with Alice suspenders, or even better cut them straps off and throw them away and attach something easy adjustable and wide with padding, as the pack is great but the straps are some sort of torture!

Nice pack. I bet the upper loop your using for your ax could have a small Alice clip pouch added to the daisy chain loops for a quick access pouch. Say for a poncho or something you might want to get to in a hurry

+John “survivor johnny” Tewelow The daisy chain loops will take molle attachments, but it's kind of awkward and not very well balanced for adding other pouches. It does work, though. Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome comment, brother! -Dave

how much weight can carry comfortable

Not sure of the exact weight it can carry comfortably, however, the straps aren't the best. If you were to work out an alternate shoulder straps option, it would be able to carry much more without the irritation. Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

If you cut off the antiquated German shoulder straps and attach Alice shoulder straps you can carry up to 30 lbs of gear comfortably! :-)

The shoulder straps is old German webbing, not original Swiss military. ;)

I'm part of the Swiss Army and have been using this pack and an other variant during my service. I hate these packs, they are very unconfortable, not practical, and I have seen many of them break (the carrying strap) in the field. Being military packs and having a vintage pack doesn't make them good bulletproof backpacks. I would trade my combat pack (Kampfrucksack90) for any modern pack any day. Some of the swiss army gear is great, but really these packs...no.

+Straken07 Thank you for watching and commenting! I would not call this pack bulletproof, at all. I would call it a decent pack for a day hike or overnighter and a good, waterproof pack to keep my gear dry. I prefer the modern packs over this one, as well, although I like the price of this one. -Dave

+HighCarbonSteel Love I can see the advantage of the affordability and yes it would make the job for an over night adventure if there isn't a lot of walking. Thanks for the response and the videos !

Straken07 Thank you for watching the videos! I can say that out of my backpack rotation, I probably use this one the least. Not the most comfortable but pretty neat, though. Nice talking with you! -Dave

oh my god, I was forced to use that piece of shit equipment for 11 long years. Gladly turned it in after my service. I can't imagine a worse backpack. It had not even enough space to hold the whole issued gear and was just plain uncomfortable when coupled with the webbing as intended. The webbing for the helmet was the worst, as it didn't hold the helmet when it was overpacked slightly. I hope the inventor of that thing rots in hell. Fortunately it was replaced a few years ago with more practical gear.
