Developers and publishers need to relearn compression techniques. These bloated game sizes are bad, and they should be forced to address it.
@Jonassoe
@Jonassoe 6 күн бұрын
Most of the "bloat" is high-res textures and high-quality audio. You can easily compress 100 GB games down to a Switch cartridge, it's just going to look and sound somewhat worse.
@laserwolf65
@laserwolf65 6 күн бұрын
@Jonassoe Absolutely not true. These 100-200 gb games are loaded to the brim with inefficient code, redundant files, unused textures, etc. They don't clean this bloat up because they don't respect the players' storage.
@Nosidda
@Nosidda 6 күн бұрын
@@laserwolf65 Very true. Game sizes are getting out of control, and developers and publishers need to be forced into addressing the issue that they clearly don't care about addressing. If Nintendo is able to make a game as huge as Tears of the Kingdom only 18gb in size, or Super Mario Odyssey only 5gb in size, then I fail to see why third parties can't learn to compress their games properly when most of the reason why we need so much storage now is because games are overloaded with so much junk code and assets. There is absolutely no reason for Black Ops 6 to be over 200gb.

With all due respect, your opinion sucks. If a developer sees potential in the switch platform, they'll develop for it and create the game all digital or partially digital if they want to. You dont need to completely remove the physical slot for that. The more options for the consumet, the better.

I actually think this is great news. The biggest problem with the ps5 is that even with a terabyte of storage, you can only have like 8 AAA games installed because they're so damn bloated. Forcing devs to compactify or pay the price of a higher costing cartridge is a great plan.

I think thatphysical versions of large games that weigh 50 GB, 100 GB or more should only be released in collector's editions, as Limited Run Games does. So the value of the bundle in the eyes of buyers will increase, and it will be easier to justify the high price. People who don't see the point in buying a dust box in the modern world won't buy one anyway. And here it makes no sense to save on them by releasing a small cartridge with an incomplete game.

"if you have to download half the game it starts to feel like you purchased a license key on a tiny piece of plastic" yes, but I'd like to add that the same apply to any game that require a day1 patch to be playable. which is a thing that happen too often with big title now days.

Base on Nintendo (REAL) Patent, They patent a dlss type upscaler that can upscale 540p to 720/1080p and 1080p to 4k the sole main purpose is because of their next patent about decompression that can cut almost half of file size but the graphics is still at target res. remember Horizon adventure in ps5 is 15 gb and switch version is 6 gb.... that dlss like upscaler and decompression will help 1st and 3rd party game devs alot.

@theoneeyedfool 2 күн бұрын
This! Also it’s my understanding that the Nvidia Tegra T239 leaked to be in the Switch 2 has a dedicated file decompression block that will likely also tie into Nintendo’s upscaling tech, so that should help too.

32gb is enough. 480p native with dlss to 1080p is perfect for portable play. No switch games will need 4K native textures. Honestly if a 100gb game can be compressing into a 32gb cart with large downloads for docked play that would be better. I want more 60fps experiences anyway. If it has to run at 1080p and 1440p that’s fine. I am more concerned about cpu than cart size. It seems to be about 10percent faster in single core thru put relative to ps4 but much faster multicore. Based on a78 figures in geekbench. I want bayonetta 3 at 60fp locked in portable and upscaled in docked at 60fps. I think if they can push the hardware correctly we should get series s experiences in docked play in 3rd party titles. With some great dlss improvements.

You do know the WiiU use a modified Blu-ray disc format, and the Wii used a modified DVD format because the other companies wanted to charge too much money to use the correct discs
@theoneeyedfool
@theoneeyedfool 2 күн бұрын
Three things: 1) If TotK is anything to go by, major releases for the Switch 2 will likely be $70, and that may well be to compensate for cartridge cost. 2) DS carts store 8-512MB, while the PSP discs store 900MB-1.8GB. 3DS/PSVita games are around the same size, with 3DS having more variability at 1-8GB while the Vita seems to be around 3-4 or so. Devs didn’t seem to care about the differences on either platform because Nintendo has been consistently the more successful company in the handheld space. I don’t see that changing. 3) 64GB cards are no longer good value, because you’re still paying for the raw materials, the programming for OS/device recognition, etc. You can get 128GB cards of the same class for almost no extra money because of this.
@ZestyAsTech
@ZestyAsTech Күн бұрын
Good points. While I hate to see the price jump, $70 price tags will definitely help offset the cost.

My take: The assets will be largely cut down its details. You know, compression can be very effective if you throw away details. But it will be recovered: DLSS4. Each game will have a DLSS model trained with pairs of the 16gb version of the frames of the game and the 150gb high definition assets frames. The model will learn not only super resolution, but also the high quality assets. So, the detais will not be stored in game instalation files, but in the weitghs of the AI model.
@theoneeyedfool
@theoneeyedfool 2 күн бұрын
I don’t think the Ampere-based chip leaked to be in Switch 2 will support DLSS 4. Certainly 2, and there’s talk that the tensor cores might be Lovelace so maybe we’ll get 3. Still a definite win though, especially since Nintendo has a patent on basically their own dynamically-scaling version of it that, if all their previous optimization strategies are anything to go by, should be great.

Unlike discs, you can make a cartirage any size you want. Back in the 90s, yes cartriges sucked because they held back the nintendo 64's superior hardware. Now, cartriges can be any size the manufacturer wants, just think micro SD cards. Additionally, they have far greater read speeds than disks. The tradeoff is that it gets really expensive if you have more than 64 gigs, if nintendo wants the games to be playable of the cartirage, some tradeoffs will have to be made because of the media's high price.

@@fishstickrepairs1834SD Cards degrade due to the process it takes to write to an SD card. The read operations do not involve moving electrons forcefully across the cell and uses much lower voltage than write operations. Therefore reading an SD Card is practically infinite. If Nintendo were to use SD cards to replace game cartridges, it would probably be write locked and only allow reading from the card. So I highly doubt durability would become an issue.

I used to think nintendo was being lazy for lagging so far behind on their console specs for decades, but now I think it'd deliberate to push everyone into their eshop. Why? So more players are exposed to their fomo tactics like what they did with SMB35 and 3D All-Stars, as such unethically manipulative practices aren't illegal. But also it gives them the freedom to promote their own products instead of any/all 3rd party games, just like how google & microsoft have been controlling ad spaces. I agree about video game preservation being a growing concern, but as antagonistic as nintendo's always been, it's better off in the hands of people who can't be bought.

I love the switch carts. I think the odds are that the switch 2 will be so successful that 3rd party devs will simply go through the extra effort. As long as Nintendo upgrades the carts, it will probably be okay. Additionally, does Nintendo really need 3rd party games? I would argue they probably don’t. 1st party Switch games have sold more than ever. I doubt this is changing anytime soon. I personally expect physical media to make a comeback in the next decade, since digital media is really bordering on a scam.

Absolutely. There are microSD cards coming out that can hold 2tb now. The technology has evolved, but the question is will it be affordable. If we’re talking consumer prices for standard flash storage, it will probably take up a sizable percentage of a standard $60 game price. Because it’s a company manufacturing in bulk, it will bring the price down, but because they will be a proprietary design made by Nintendo, that will move the price back up. At this point it’s all just guesses

I can get a 128 gigs SD card for like 5 dollars, it's not gonna be that bad in a market where every other game costs from 60 to 200 dollars for *some* reason, they can also just make cartridges of different sizes, like a 4 gig cartridge for most indie games, 8 gigs, 16 gigs, and so on and so forth, like pen drives. I also say this as someone who wants to emulate everything Nintendo on a Steam Deck and basically only wants a Switch for Splatoon but still.

Pretty big flaw in your analysis. Same card format/technology does not equal same card capazity. There is no need for a different card format or technology in order to get a bigger capazity. Technology evolves and gets more capacity over time. That speculation that the switch 2 game cards will only have 16gb-32gb because the switch 1 cards where that sizes makes as much sense as speculating in 2016 that the switch 1 will only have 4gb game cards because the 3DS game cards where that size. Or that 3DS games will only have 128megabyte because the first DS had only 128gb cartidges. There is a reason why its called switch 2 - its a new generation. Old sizes and restrictions of the switch 1 are not relevant for the switch 2. If you think using the same type of technology is equal to no progress, you are very wrong. SD cards use the same technology for over 20 years. Hard drives use the same technology since they where created. But they grew 1000x of times in capacity over the years because technology evolves.

With that they split costs of production with Nintendo on the console and help with specs and online in exchange for a built in MS E-Shop on a hybrid console they make together. They get a piece of the hardware dollars but they have their own dedicated shop built into the system. I think that’s better given Microsoft isn’t really doing exclusives anymore or they hope to move away from them.
