I think my main problem with the switch is that the greatness the console had was really the games not the system, the exclusives were great and despite the many ports it managed to give something original while giving us most of the Wii u library as ports, it also (despite not being great compared to the competition) had the best 3rd party support for nintendo in years and had nice classic catalog, but the console itself was such a step backward in every other way especially compared to the PS4 for example, the switch genuinely didn't have notable features and I'm talking the software was basically nothing, gone the web browser and gone an actual community hub, no messages or voice chat from the system, no music to be played on the background and basically no apps aside from KZbin (which is a sable since the Wii days), hulu and chruchyroll, hell the Wii had Netflix, no themes no folders and i can go on and on about this, it loses to the PS4 in the overall category pretty hard and even to the Wii u outside of the games department, don't get me wrong though the console did what it needed to do which is having the best nintendo games and I'm glad they nailed that, but the console lacked in every other area so i hope they fix that with the switch 2

My entire thing about consoles is a console should be more than its library I was always excited to take my 3DS with me and play games on the go, and I think its library is genuinely absurd in variety and quality. I've always loved the Wii U, and adored when games really took advantage of the gamepad, and for things like Miiverse and it's overall aesthetic I love a lot of Switch games, but I'm never really excited to boot up my Switch, for the experience OF using the Switch. It doesn't have really have any unique qualities to it that sell it to me, I don't feel like it aged nearly as gracefully as the 3DS, and I don't feel nearly as strongly about it's library as something like a Gamecube. This is personally the generation I've felt the least attached to a Nintendo console, even though the library is nothing to sneeze at

the switch has problems and all but one thing I really appreciate is how efficient Nintendo has been with putting out games on the switch, it felt like Nintendo was struggling with getting Wii U games out, most infamously the first half of 2013 having pretty much nothing of note I see a lot of people say the Wii U "had a certain charm to it" and I see where those people are coming from, but I think most of that is just nostalgia, nobody was calling the Wii U charming when it was still around, I get that the menus and stuff had more personality but say if the switch 2 brings some of that back would you be like "omg Nintendo is so back!" or would you just be like "oh, neat!' and then get used to it

It's also amazing just how purely gameplay focused most of the titles on Switch are in comparison. You don't have a particular franchise release completed wasted because they decided to put in mandatory stupid controls that don't work well (Star Fox Zero). You get games that more often are able to impress you by focuses on actually good design and interesting ideas rather than amuse your for 5 minutes because there's a mic you can blow air into or something. I think the menu thing is something that is really overblown. Definitely a legitimate complaint you could want addressing for next time, but in terms of ease of use/ seriousness of the issue? It works perfectly fine (a lot better than the slow ass Wii U menu) and it lets you go in and out of games quickly like it should. Obviously I want themes, they're just cool. But I think it goes a bit overboard when you get people going to the extent to unironically say, "Nintendo is so corporate now, they are quirky anymore and the Wii U era was so much better." Like dude, are we remembering we are talking about systems meant to play games here? Because by all means, hop in a time a machine and go back to playing Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U for the entirety of 2012 if you want to, lmao, I think I'll stick with multiple big releases per year personally.

Ports only enhance the overall library. Now in the future there are an absolutely insane amount of games centralized into one place, and that library is being maintained and expanded even further since Switch 2 is backwards compatible. Obviously the pricing of them is too expensive, though.

I am glad that the Switch and the Steam Deck helped promote handheld game systems, that they weren't an "inferior" way to play games. That being said, the Switch really is feeling its age. Hope to see what Nintendo has planned in April.

Part of the Games Debate comes back around to performance. The slower your device is, the more you need to optimise, and the harder it becomes to develop for.

Firstly, I am going to skip ahead. So I won't go into discussing The Game Boy, Gameboy Color, Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, etc etc. That won't look good for Nintendo, but this market was still finding it's footing during the 90s. If we start with the (2001) GBA, it had specs slightly above the SNES (1990) and below the (1994) Sega 32X-CD. Let's just call it a 1991-level of performance and that's being generous. Now we look at the Nintendo DS (2004), although I much prefer the DS Lite version. But anyways if we analyse that, it's performance is very close to the (1996) N64 console. Let's just call it a 1997-level of performance, again this is being generous. Now we move to their first competitor, the (2005) Sony PSP. And yes I prefer the Brite version. Anyways it's performance is much higher than the Sega Saturn, Sony PS1, and N64, and even matches the (1999) Sega Dreamcast. While it falls short of the "slow" Sony PS2 (2001) console. So we should call it a 2000-level of performance. Then we move onto the Nintendo 3DS (2011). And yes, there is a sizeable difference with the Pro Version which is the 2014 new3DS. Analysing this performance it is pretty much equal to the PS2, and notably slower than the (2002) Nintendo GameCube. So we should call it a 2001-level of performance. Around the same time, we saw the (2012) PS Vita being released. Again I prefer the (2013) Slim version. And analysing this performance it was well ahead of the PS2, GameCube, Wii, and even the (2002) Original Xbox. It did fall short of the (2005) Xbox 360, PS3, and WiiU (2012). So we should call it a 2004-level of performance. Now we get to Nintendo's next handheld, the (2017) NSwitch. This released as a console faster than the (2005) Xbox 360, PS3, and the "slow" WiiU (2012). But was much much slower than the "lackluster" XB1 (2013), PS4, and even the "lackluster" PS4 Pro (2017) console. It's performance can be only attributed at best of 2011-level of performance. We can move unto the recently announced Switch-2 and do speculation. As to how this 2025 handheld can be attributed with 2013-level of performance but that is a topic for another day. Or comparisons to Valve's console with the (2022) Steam Deck that has a similar 2014-level of performance. Looking back let us summarise! Performance - Release - Console 1991 - 2001 - GBA 1997 - 2004 - NDS 2000 - 2005 - PSP 2001 - 2011 - 3DS 2004 - 2011 - PS Vita 2011 - 2017 - NSwitch 2014 - 2022 - SteamDeck 2013 - 2025 - Switch-2 ....anyone see a pattern ?

I will say that the Switch software itself feels lazy and low effort in a lot of features when you compare it to Playstation or XBox and especially past Nintendo consoles. It's missing the passion that you can feel in the Wii or 3DS. The lack of theme music, terrible eShop design and functionality, blank home menu with two basic themes, online functionality dependant on a mobile app, the fact that it took FOUR YEARS to turn on Bluetooth capabilities that it had the whole time, and no fun or weird applications (like the Wii had Mii plaza, the 3DS had SpotPass and sound/camera tools to mess with, etc.) I hope the Switch 2 has a bit more functionality but also fun included in the software, Nintendo has it in them.

In the GBA's defense, it was only on the market for less than 3.5 years before the DS came out. The DS had almost twice as much time before 3DS came out & the 3DS also had a similar amount of time before the Switch (if you want to count that). I'm sure it would have seen more original titles if it had more time on the market as the main handheld.

It's crazy to me because that was hands down one of the best years for Nintendo games of all time, rivaling even some of the most popular years over the decades. Switch legitimately amassed over half the amount of games that Wii U had by the end of its entire run lmao. Even if I'm not as into Breath of the Wild these days, that time period of playing that game alone made that years amazing. And that was before Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey, two games that I've played the hell out of over the years.

From NES to Gamecube my younger brother and I shared Nintendo consoles. I mostly played my room mate's Wii in college, then I got my own after getting married but didn't play it much. I technically got a used Wii U just before the Switch came out, mostly for the HD Zeldas. The Switch was the first Nintendo console that I bought for myself on launch day and experienced from the very beginning, when the eShop had like 12 games total. Now I have over 200 games and more than 100 on my wishlist. It's been a dream come true and just the right console for a guy in his thirties and forties.

The thing i love about the Switch was it managed to punch above it's weight when it was counted out not to. Its a definitely my favorite console now overtaking the PS2. I love this Handheld/Console. It literally hand me buying every game i wanted! My favorite part about the Switch was Crash Bandicoot OG Trilogy plus 4, Spyro OG Trilogy, and Persona coming to Nintendo console for the FIRST TIME! Yeah sure we got Wrath of Cortex on GameCube, Persona Q 1&2 on 3DS and strikers but the mainline stuff OMG I love that and then we got some of the best Nintendo Warriors games on there and It Excelled my Love for Xenoblade Chronicles series!.... I love this Console! Also Scott failed to mention this but Pokémon Legends Arceus, Pokémon Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee, Pokémon Sword and Shield my favorite Pokémon games on Switch!! Dang the Switch was hitting and darn I can't wait for the Switch 2

It's straight up positive in any sense possible beyond the scummy pricing. There were some solid titles on Wii U that had absolutely no shot at success on that platform. Porting them to Switch bolstered the library and exposed a bunch of people to some good games they missed out on. It would literally only be a problem for me if we were only getting Wii U ports for long stretches of time, but we have been getting major releases pretty much constantly through the system's entire life. It's the best of both worlds.

The only console store worse than the Switch's eShop is the PS3's PSN (post-mid-system lifespan update). Before the update, it was functional and you could find anything you were looking for. After the update, it barely loads anything, takes forever to navigate, and is prone to crash. Not a good look for Nintendo to be compared to that. Also, it's overrun with scam games, trash mobile ports, and shovelware. It's very difficult to find anything good in there without trudging though page after page of utter crap.

I definitely feel like the 1st half of the switch was waaaay better than the 2nd half. The half baked Mario sports game, pokemon games being a let down overall, animal crossing on it not being as good as new leaf, not really a new Mario kart, and performance issues for later releases definitely hold it back for me. Even TOTK, not my cup of tea though BOTW was. The 1st half was amazing though.

I don't know. I found the 2nd halve better than the first halve. The first cycle started off strong. It gave us great games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. But afterwards, things started settling down for first party titles. They ported many Wii U games onto the Switch and 3rd party games were coming in everywhere. Only thing big around the time was Smash Bros. 2019 was somewhat decent with games like Luigi's Mansion 3 & Astral Chain. But we were still getting more ports & 3rd party games. 2020 was probably the worst Switch has ever been cause if Covid pandemic & the 35th anniversary of Super Mario were underwhelming. But 2021 is where I think it peaked. Not only was Nintendo getting back into making first party games, but we also been getting alot of games announced that were hype. Metroid Dread, Wario Ware Get It Together, Mario Party Superstar, Advance War Reboot, more Smash DLC characters, a BotW sequel, etc. And than we got Kirby's first 3D adventure the following year. Than 2023 got it back together with a new & freah take of a 2D Mario game, a remake of two Mario RPG games, a new Princess Peach game, Pikmin 4 was out, an incredible remake/remastered of Metroid Prime & Kirby: Return to Dreamland and so on. And 2024 wasn't bad either. Paper Mario: TTYD Remake came out and it was awesome. We got a revival of Mario & Luigi. A new Zelda game where Zelda is finally playable. More incredible 3rd party games. And so on. So yeah. The first halve was hit & miss. But the 2nd halve started picking it up for me.

If I had to choose only a single Nintendo console to own, id pick the Switch hands down, and I think its why its not overrated. I didn't play on it much over the years since I've owned it but every time a big game for the switch came out, id pick it back up from the corner and its feel like a brand new console again.

If you can only pick one Nintendo console (but could have other consoles), I wouldn't even consider the Switch. The DS would be my choice, and it wouldn't even be close. With the DS, you have access to not only the entire, impressive DS library, but also the GBA's and Game Boy's libraries.

The wii u's failure forced Nintendo to port games from it so others could play said games, which was smart, then they followed up with fully new games, rinse and repeat. The switch 2's line up will most likely be like the ds output, new game after new game. Just be realistic about the release potential.

This is something I always find weird and annoying about the majority of Nintendo fans. They praise to heavens when a console is a failure. Gamecube and Wii U were failures for many reasons (NO, enough with "the marketing" BS) but when a console is a hit like Wii or Switch somehow is despised and "overrrated". It feels like some fans can’t stand when Nintendo appeals to a broader audience. But here’s the thing-consoles live and die by their software. It’s not about fancy menus, hardware gimmicks, or multimedia features. It’s about games. The Switch’s success isn’t a fluke. It’s because of its incredible variety of games that appeal to players of all ages and interests. Sure, it’s fine to have personal preferences, but dismissing a console’s success just because it’s popular feels shortsighted and tiresome. So, No scott. It is not overrated.

Ah, the Nintendo Switch. The console that brought us revolutionary new 3D and 2D Marios, two big new Zeldas, mainline Pokémon to a home console, a Super Smash Bros. game where everyone came back, put Kirby into a full 3D adventure, and turned Splatoon into a multi-game series, among others. And yet? It's also the console generation that required us to pay for online, has no extra themes, offered a huge amount of ports/remakes, whose main Joy-Con controller is infamous for drifting, and has an unappealing eShop. Hmm. As with any Nintendo console, I maintained a specific interest in the Mario series. Many fans proclaim this as the best time to be a Mario fan. Indeed, both Odyssey and Wonder are well-received across the board, Mario Party is back to its chaotic roots, we had a Mario RPG feast last year, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now the single best-selling game in the franchise, and even Princess Peach got a new little experiment adventure. However...being a diehard fan of the series through the run of the Switch wasn't all that fun. The Mario sports games -- despite my personal enjoyment -- were no fun to discuss. There's also the whole Mario Mandates nonsense that divided the community in late 2021. When the Booster Course Pass was new, countless arguments spouted about what makes a good Mario aesthetic. Then when Wonder came out, folks started arguing about Mario bosses designs. Mario's output on the Switch is undeniably great. I like most of the games with him here. But I'm hard-pressed to call this the greatest era of the franchise when the fandom has acted more hostile and gatekeeping. I haven't even gotten into the Paper Mario side, but I digress. Anyway, I do find the Nintendo Switch a tad overrated, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I had my share of fun with it. I like the 3DS and Wii U generation a bit more, but Switch is on my top five consoles.

No. I just got a Switch this past November. It’s pretty amazing. I had a Switch Lite that I got when the pandemic hit and Switch was sold out everywhere. I thought, “Well, I’ll get a Lite and then I’ll use it to travel.” And then I never traveled again. But then I never got a proper Switch. And I said, “I’ll only get one if the price drops.” But it never did that I saw. Just the Mario Kart bundle but I already had that game. This year it finally dropped below $300 at Target for Black Friday and I picked it up and a bunch of controllers and extra pair of joycons. I love it. I’m playing it on TV, but I like how you can dock it or play it on the go. It’s way better than the Lite. I still like the Lite and I’ll take that traveling instead of the Switch proper. But if I had just waited for the Switch to come back in stock (6 months later), I never would have gotten a Lite.

I disagree. The Switch is overrated and is far from Nintendo's best console. It's extremely underpowered. The Joycons have been an issue since day 1, not even mentioning how uncomfortable they are to use if you don't have baby hands. As part of Nintendo's ongoing issue with user accounts (i.e. not having persistent ones between consoles like Sony and Microsoft), anything purchased for the virtual consoles for the Wii or Wii-U is just gone. The dearth of memorable exclusives is going to cast the original Switch into the dustbin of gaming history, too. While it does have a good library... it's only good _if you don't have other, better systems_ to play most of the games on, because most of the Switch's library are titles available on other consoles and Steam. And unlike the Gamecube era, nobody's playing the Nintendo version of anything because it's the best version... because it isn't going to be. Hell, even Breath of the Wild was better on Wii-U... and that was considered the Switch's selling point early on! If anything, it's not a great console but a "good enough" console that was overhyped. As far as being Nintendo's best console... as long as the NES, SNES, Game Boy, and DS exist, the Switch doesn't stand a chance. The NES is what made video games synonymous with Nintendo. While that's about as far as its long-lasting achievements go, that's nothing to sniff at. Games from the SNES are still being ported to this day _and_ there are games on the SNES that will likely never be ported that are still worth playing on original hardware. The SNES has cemented its place in gaming. What can even be said about the Game Boy? It was _the_ name in portable gaming for over a decade. Nintendo deciding to make the GBA (and later the DS!) backward compatible with the original Game Boy was brilliant. Lastly, the DS is a treasure trove of wholly unique games that, like much of the SNES's library, will likely never be ported forward but are incredible experiences. The best you can say about the Switch is that it squandered the little potential it had.

In some ways, yes. In other ways, no. On the one hand, its home to some of Nintendo's absolute best 1st party titles, console exclusives, bite sized indie titles and decent multi-platform titles that can all be played on the go. On the other hand, the joycons imo are some the worst controllers Nintendo has ever made, on-the-go play can be a bit uncomfortable depending on the game being played and how big the player's hands are, and finally many multi-plat games are heavily compromised so they are playable on the Switch while they would look and run much better on other consoles like the Xbox, PS4 and PS5. Just depends on your taste I guess.

Something else that's just incredible for the switch is how it has the entire Xenoblade Trilogy on it and soon to be Quadilogy with Xenoblade X Definitive edition. It's such a great console that provided us with some of the best games in Nintendo's history, and even some of the older ones found their way onto the console. We even have the ability to play Paper Mario N64 AND Thousand Year Door, how amazing is that?

The Wii U was cool, but it didn't sell enough. Nintendo clearly put good money into the games for it but couldn't sell enough copies, so clearly they wanted to sell them on Switch where they had a better chance. I'm actually really glad that they ported most of the first party Wii U games, it brought them forward into a game card or eShop version that can last further into the future. We used to have DVD movies, then Blu-ray, now that and streaming. No one complains that they "port" movies over to Blu-ray even though we already had DVD versions. It's bringing things forward so we can continue to enjoy them on newer hardware.

Now that we're at the end of it's life cycle, I'm pretty confident that the Switch was pretty meh for me. It essentially just became my Smash Bros Ultimate Machine since around 2020. Most of the 1st party games that came out on the Switch felt like they were missing something subtle, but important, to me. Pokemon moved into these weird, bad 3D open-world games. Zelda completely lost its identity. Super Mario Odyssey was great, but I still find myself gravitating towards 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy. Metroid Dread was fun, but I don't have a desire to replay it like I do older Metroid games and it was quite a bummer that MP4 got delayed past the Switch's life entirely. Smash Bros Ultimate (though it has an amazing cast of characters) lost a lot of single player value by not having trophies and storymode on par with Subspace Emissary. Animal Crossing: New Horizons also missed subtle bits of magic that past AC games had. For Nintendo handhelds, the DS family is still the best, imo. (We'll see if maybe the Switch 2 can tip the scales in the Switch family's favor). For consoles, it's a toss up between the Wii and Gamecube. Both had such fantastic games (I think they have the best console games of every 1st party franchise between them). Honestly, the Wii was so dang backwards compatible with the GameCube that they kind of merge in my mind as one super console, lol.

The Switch will have the entire Xenoblade saga on it, so it's my favorite console as of today. Prior to it I think the Gamecube had the best library of games over all other Nintendo consoles, but the Switch really topped that in my opinion
