Very enjoyable, thank you for posting it. I 've wanted to see it for years and finally did for the first time. Glynis Johns was beautiful and saucy, Richard Todd a stalwart hero; Michael Gough as Buckingham a terrific competitor with Todd for Glynis, and James Robertson Justice most amusing as Henry VIII. Love, adventure, dueling and intrigue! 👍

Henry Vllls sisters were never rude to his wife, Katherine of Aragon. She was loved by the whole court and the country. Her sisters in law sided with her when Henry put her aside for Anne Boleyn. His sister Mary refused to attend court when Anne was ensconced there in order to avoid her.

A very late response to this post, but the main reason Mary Tudor Queen of France opposed Henry's divorce of Katherine of Aragon was more because she hated Anne Boleyn than she loved Katherine.

Why is nobody bowing to the Princess Mary when they address her? The Tudors were famous for their formality and ceremony and did everything by the ancient royal book. Neither would Mary have received anyone undressed and in her bed and she did not turn down the French kings suit. She merely made Henry promise that if and when she was widowed, instead of marrying her off in another dynastic alliance, she be free to choose her second husband (Brandon, whom she did love for a long time before she married the French king. And she did marry him by proxy in a lavish ceremony at Greenwich Palace some weeks before she sailed to France for the actual wedding. However Mary knew her brother the king would renege on his agreement to let her choose her next husband and would marry her off to another potentate......so when Brandon was sent to France to escort the widowed Mary back to England, she snatched that opportunity to marry him secretly in France. Henry Vlll was furious and they were punished with being banished from court and having to pay huge fines. It took the intervention of Wolsey for them not to be punished in even worse ways........

And the British humor strikes again. LOL. Great movie. The Lady Mary Tudor looks like the same actor who played in Mary Poppins as Mrs. Banks. I just looked it up. She is the same actor. It's Glynis Johns. No wonder why Walt Disney had her in a later movie from his studios.

Henry VIII and Charles Brandon grew up together. Brandon's father was Henry VII standard at the battle of Bothworth field. He was killed by Richard III as he was going for Henry VII. Because of this, Charles Brandon grew up in the royal household and a good friend of Henry VIII. They remained friends until the Death of Charles Brandon.

Even the kings sisters and wives were not allowed to call him by his Christian name in public. They had to address him as "Your Majesty", so they got that wrong. And the kings sisters were haughty and proud and spoiled, not all bubbly and conversational. And neither of Henry Vlll's sisters attended the Cloth of Gold event, where Henry himself wrestled the French King and lost. His sister Margaret was in Scotland married to the Scottish king James, and Mary was married at a young age to the French king who died 3 months later, then she married Charles Brandon and was back in England when the Field of the Cloth of Gold occurred, so they got that detail wrong too. And Charles Brandon had been a life long friend of Henry Vlll and they had been educated together in the royal school room with specially appointed tutors, so he did not just meet the king as an adult as shown here.

I adore Glynis Johns; I've enjoyed every role I've ever seen her in. As a teenager I thoroughly enjoyed the swashbuckler novel this is adapted from, When Knighthood Was in Flower by Charles Major. I didn't know it had been filmed till I found this yesterday. EDIT: Now that I've seen it I have to admit I'm disappointed. Her talent is wasted in this movie, which is a lot less fun than the book was, and she didn't get any good lines. In fact all of the dialogue is dull and the costumes are about all this movie has going for it.

This movie is so good, I'm sure that Disney has forgotten all about this live-action movie that they made when Walt Disney was still alive. Because I should say this is one of the great masterpiece live action Disney movies, just like 20,000 lakes under the sea, treasure island, Swiss family Robertson. The Davy Crockett movies, Mary Poppins including Mary Poppins returns, The parent trap movies, Pollyanna and Herbie the Love bug movies. And because this live-action movie is one of those Disney live action masterpieces, this is so good I think Disney should reboot this movie into animation. I really want to see this movie into animation by the Walt Disney Studios someday, I'm sure they can add some humor in some parts of this fairytale classic. Because the truth is when the Walt Disney Animation Studios retail story from a classic fairytale, they always make sure they add a few humor parts. And if they ever do that someday, retelling the story again but in CGI animation or 2D animation. They should use the original title when knighthood was in flower, which is the title of the original book. In fact if they work on this possible movie idea into animation, the working title should be The sword and the Rose. Named after this live-action movie version, and later they should title it as when knighthood falls into flower The sword and the Rose. That should be the final title after they work on the classic fairytale into animation. I really want to see this classic story to be retold into animation by Walt Disney Animation Studios someday

The French king most certainly did not get drunk on his wedding night and he boasted of "crossing the river 3 times".........And Mary was very sexually demanding and also "danced him to death" so the old boy croaked 3 months after the wedding.
@kiminari9921
@kiminari9921 4 жыл бұрын
It's not known if she was and most likely he was. He was desperate for a male heir and Mary was his last chance. Though she probably did something similar to this in the movie where she used his want of a child to "danced him to death" so she could go back to Charles. Charles was already widowed and had two children of his own which Mary became a stepmother to and cared for them. So Charles was not concerned with her being a ruined woman. Though this is a nice take the actual story might have been a bit too much for audiences of the time where if you consummated marriage then to be married again so soon would be very improper. They definitely changed details to make it more palatable to audiences of the time.

Great movie, the ending was a bit of an anticlimax though. Why was Henry so blasé after the death of his friend the duke of Buckingham? And the kiss at the end between Mary and Charles came out of nowhere. Kind of a disappointment after such a strong build up. Glynis Johns’ charm sells itself though so I can’t complain too much

I've loved every Glynis Johns role prior to seeing this one. I wish she'd refused it, it was a waste of her time imo, but I suppose Disney had her under contract and she couldn't get out of it. But she did say in an interview that she enjoyed preparing for the role - learning court dances etc.
