The best part of Japanese swords is the fact that, the blade speaks to you, when you undsheath your sword depending on the speed, it'll make a light *crack* as if to tell you that its ready, or if its with haste, the crack is much louder as if shouting a battle cry, every strike is accompanied by the breath of the sword in synch with your own, and in the end when the battle is done and you return it to rest it makes a small tap on the sheath as a goodbye until your next conversation

there are a fair few examples and there are Tsuba which aren't even guards at all because they don't offer any protection, though generally they're mounted on shorter swords because they're a bit more comfortable to wear closer to the waist but at the same time, fittings on Japanese swords can be changed out very easily depending on the owner's taste, and may not be original to the blades they are currently on as they're often bot made in matching sets or as one offs.

I started training with my Katanas because of the gym closures and wanting to work with something weighted again. My katana without Tsuba I immediately could tell was extremely aerodynamic and very well balanced. I’ve been hunting on this topic and when I feel my katanas with tsubas there’s too much weight at the top side of the sword for it to be evenly balanced between both hands. Uesugi Kenshin believed that a warrior with true skill wouldn’t need the Tsuba. On top of the Katana being far more aerodynamic without one, I can’t imagine where your first line of strategy would ever be to use your Tsuba to beat an opponent. It surely has happened before but it was most likely either due to luck or a sheer amount of over skill than the opponent. The point and effectiveness of any weapon should be abusing its range over your opponent.

The style without a tsuba (guard) was used before the Edo Period on some swords for concealability. The saya/scabbard is strapped vertically to the left side of the body with a sash under the kimono. If the wielder needs the sword, he feigns being chilly and pulls his right arm into his kimono, the draws the sword vertically through the front opening in the kimono so that the right sleeve falls off his shoulder. This can be seen in some older B&W samurai movies.

@@whatbreaksthesilence8508 Sorry, English isn't my first language. When you use katana, you don't parry your opponent's sword with the handguard. You use the spine of the blade to parry. The tsuba or handguard is used mainly to prevent your hand from accidently grabbing a handful of blade (ouch!). So the lack of tsuba in Japanese (or any other Asian culture) shows the bravery (or foolishness) and the skill of the wielder.

@Skallagrim: 1: are you using a japanese style grip, or gripping like it was a longsword when cutting? 2. How was it compared to some of your other blades in it's price range? 3. nice edge alignment on the woodcutting - that test is unforgiving of error
@jaketheasianguy33075 жыл бұрын
There are 2 ways to grip an european sword (longsword,messer,saber,etc....) is the hammer grip (grip it like how every amateur grip) or the handshake grip (how the japanese always grip their sword) so it makes almost no difference

Jake The Asian Guy Gripping katana is not an universal knowledge. There were no widespread standards. A hammer grip? Fine. Handshake grip? Sure. Even a grip with a thumb, middle and index finger? Even that is depicted on trained warriors.

The body mechanics of two handed sword grips are pretty much identical across cultures. There are only so many ways to swing a sword.

At a kenjutsu seminar I attended one of the instructors spoke a bit about hand placement during overhead strikes, which is dynamic and changes not only to assist with the slicing action but also to ensure that the hands have adequate support on impact--it was a kind of counterintuitive motion, maybe related to the hand-shock you experienced? But then again I can totally see how the menuki and overall handle construction could play a huge part in that too.

@KaiserAfini5 жыл бұрын
I think it boils down to 3 main issues: 1- The lack of a subtantial guard means a higher chance of crippling damage on the battlefield 2- Its not generally the best for thrust attacks 3- The grip is generally not comfortable Every time he reviews a katana, he generally mentions those points.
@fransthefox96825 жыл бұрын
@@KaiserAfini Well the disc guard (which this example lacks) is obviously not useful for murder stroke or catching an opponent's blade, but it can block and protects your hand in a 360 degree. They are actually pretty good thrusters. I don't find their grips uncomfortable. It's good, but it's not his preference.
@lucanic43285 жыл бұрын
@@KaiserAfini To be fair, a disc guard is not that worse compared to a normal crossguard with long quillons. You really need to add other components like rings to make it protective enough. Moreover, there are quite big tsubas around that could cover completely the fist and on the battlefield people who use katana and such usually had gauntlets. Also, here there are very good points on why you don't need a complex guard on a Japanese (or even Chinese and Korean) sword: www.quora.com/Why-did-the-ancient-Japanese-Samurai-not-want-cross-guards-on-their-swords/answer/Luca-Nic-1?ch=10&share=5dd8be62&srid=3z2sJ 2) It is actually a very good thruster among curved swords, because the blade is not very wide and it's rigid. There are as well straight blade atana (the term is muzori) although less common: pin.it/rnhsxaxfkgip2y pin.it/ey53koj2ordx4g 3) The grip feeling is purely subjevtive, but Matt Easton has vudeos in which he deal with thia topic as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYGln4qajLhlebM kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYrPlYaQYtZ4h7M Essentially this kind of grip is very nice for practical issue (even the European of the days apprecciated that) but it might be rough to our modern 21st century hands.

Spencer CCFT Dear Sir. I think that if you would rewatch the video, you would find that Mr. Skallagrim‘s review is overall very positiv. Yes as someone who had mixed experiences with specifically Katana he has bias, but that does not change what he said, it only influences as what we interpret his words. So he said that the cut was almost equivalent or equivalent to a very expensive european sword which he reviewed. He also said that it was what he expected or that he did not feel it cut exceptionally well. He also explained that it was probably the balancing to which he was not accustomed to. He did not judge the quality of it, at least as I, who has a bias towards sword designs from Germany ( I‘m a bloody German. I know a european ) , understand. It can often be tempting to put your words in the mouths of people with whom you disagree, but only understanding and respect will ear you understanding and respect. I hope I made my point clear without being terribly rude. I wish you a nice day and friends with opinions which they express with the principle of mutual respect. edit: I fell right in the figurative grave which was in the process of digging. This comment should much more directed at people who are more careless then you. I apologize, but I personally would still find your comment somewhat condescending. So out of the mutual respect I again apologize for targeting you, who had not exactly said what thought you had said.
