The steel hilted smallsword is a work of art. I was fortunate enough to see the green hilted hanger or cuttoe at the museum in my youth. Nice to see it again!

5:43 Benjamin Franklin had a sword having a similarly advanced blade design. It was made by his Philadelphia neighbor Samuel Soumaine. Mr. Franklin took it with him to Paris as the American Ambassador to France, and gave it as a parting gift to a french doctor and scientist before he returned home to Philadelphia.

Hi Eric, my great grandmother, Elizabeth Evans Johnston, Alabama's vice regent of Mt Vernon's Ladies Association at the time of it's acquisition for Mt Vernon, was said by family lore to have found the 1767 silver-hilted sword and arranged for it's purchase by Pierre Dupont. Do you know how Dupont became aware of this sword and persuaded him to purchase it for Mt Vernon? I would love to know the facts. Mrs. Johnston apparently was instrumental in acquiring Braddock's sash and Washington's camp bed during her tenure.

George Washington's use of sword is like a modern man picking his watch or shoes. You wouldn't wear your survival paracord wrap watch in a black tie event. I imagine Washington picking swords to wear for specific events. The cuttoe is most likely for military use, while the more elaborate smallswords for public presentations. . .

At the surrender of the British, he wore the sword that contained the souls of every British soldier he killed.

I'd love to know if the author is a fencer. I ask because my fascination with swords eventually led to a desire to learn about using them. Great subject.

I can't even find another picture of that serrated sword. What would you even call that thing?

Is it possible that the steel hilted sword was surrendered to washington or a subordinate of his and then gifted to Washington himself? This would explain why he would have a sword so up to date in terms of British fashon. Maybe it was taken from an officer fresh from the UK who surrendered.

Since we don't know, im going to assume that Washington bent down and plucked that sword from the corpse of a dead British officer, or his gear. more likely someone else did and the good loot rolled uphill until it settled in Washington's hand

Would you really want to know though? It's pretty well documented that Washington really didn't play around and probably would have got through a few British necks simultaneously 😂

I'd like to know if George Washington actually used any swords in battle, if he actually "ran through " any enemies. Those are the swords I'd like to see
