The American meat pie, often referred to as a pot pie, has its roots in the culinary traditions brought to America by European settlers, particularly the British. These savory pies date back to medieval times in Europe, where they were a staple due to their practicality in preserving meat and vegetables. In colonial America, meat pies became popular as settlers adapted their recipes to include locally available ingredients such as game meats, poultry, and root vegetables. Over time, regional variations emerged, influenced by diverse immigrant communities. The modern American meat pie typically features a flaky crust and a filling of meat, vegetables, and gravy, symbolizing comfort food and reflecting the nation's rich cultural melting pot.

Ah, yes, meat pie! That was a dish I taught myself to make very early on, before I was married, I think. It was before the Internet as we know it today existed, and I didn't have a recipe, so I winged it, and yet it was a crowd pleaser every time I made it. The magic of meat pie is that it's a pretty resilient formula with a lot of variations, so as long as you know the basics - saute some meat and veggies together with a few simple spices, add some liquid to hold it together and some flour or corn starch to thicken it, and a prefab pie shell or roll your own basic pastry to hold it - your pie will be tasty even if the texture is a little off.

Um, you couldn't buy a cookbook? Recipes have existed long before the Internet.

Would've been great if you had've gone back to medieval England and shown pies and pottages. Then made your way back through history.

@@EATSHISTORY so glad to hear you guys are polish. My great-grandmother on my mother's side was polish and she came to Australia after World war II She ended up marrying a German man and when she migrated to Australia she had the choice of America or Australia. I'm so glad she chose Australia. Americans, in general, are so stupid. If you do another recipe video could you please make Perogi? Or is it Pirogi?
