Space ice-cream is also sold as camping ice-cream. Go to any sporting goods store and look in the food section and next to the freeze dried beef stroganoff you will likely find a freeze dried ice-cream sandwich.

I don’t think it’s a scam though..... well they don’t actually eat the ice cream up there, they do have freeze dried food. Meaning it’s the kind of method they use in the food astronauts eat..... just not that food specifically

There’s something weird about the astronaut ice cream that oddly made me like it better on land than actual napoleon ice cream. Something about how processed it is, maybe

Even if it wasn't real Astronaut food it still made kids feel super cool when they got it. One could argue that you can't put a price on that.

Fry's Electronics used to have this near the checkout and randomly scattered around the store. Myth or not, it was a fun snack, and everyone always wanted a taste when you took one out. Man, I miss Fry's Electronics so much.

Lovely video! I really like nerds candy so this was great for research! ^w^ Fun fact, the strawberry flavor of nerds uses carmine colour for it's pink, with carmine colour being made out of crushed frozen cochineal insects! :]

I think the goal may have been to show what astronauts did to their foods though freeze drying, but the company that made it took it as "this is going to space" making an entire lore by accident they don't wanna break because advertising worked.

This must be old, because I’m 40, I remember seeing this in stores during class and family trips but having no interest as it had no appeal. It would show up in places it had no business being, rendering it just another novelty product you’d see at tourist traps.

See, astronaut ice cream is the apex of creamed ice technology. Theoretically its impossible to make a better snack and unfortunately is the height of snacking technology. If your friend says it tastes like the dust bowl, they have not been to space and you should distance yourself from them. Its dangerous to go alone, so take some freeze dried ice cream.

I prefer Appleheads to Lemonheads. But they're so much harder to find for some reason. They seem to have a different sort of flavor than other sour apple flavored candies have, for some reason.

I think Appleheads used Apple juice concentrate like Lemonheads use lemon juice concentrate. I think those were the only two that actually used real fruit juice of their flavor as the primary flavoring (I think all of them had lemon juice as an ingredient). I remember I didn't really like any of the other flavors except the apple and grape although the last few times I had the grape ones they tasted really off.

@Melissa0774 it has probably been a good 15 years since I have seen any of the other varieties outside of online specialty stores. When I was really little though the Walmart in my area had all the varieties though they gradually dropped all but the Lemonheads one by one. Very rarely I see the bags of the individually wrapped candies with all the varieties around Halloween but I never get them since I don't like half the flavors.
