5:40 - This has to be the greatest explanation of bolt tensile strength coupled with deceleration consequences I've ever been witness to. It also lays bare the obvious issue in this world: not enough testicular concern when engineering things, by far.

I think it's good to talk about shock loading, 60G for like 0.1s is probably not enough to move your balls towards the harness but probably long enough to snap the bolts off. That said I think 60Gs should be plenty enough, though a real engineering analysis would estimate shock loading and check if it's below the fatigue limit, etc

I'm just glad he clarified that it was double-cheeseburgers force, not double-cheeseburgers mass - I know here on Earth we always just run under the assumption that the two are the same thing, but it's a small but critical point of confusion that can lead to assumptions and errors when designing for environments where that isn't strictly true.

For bolts, don't use the "minor diameter" to calculate the area. Look up the "Tensile stress area" (At) in a table. It is a smaller value that what you calculated to account for the roots of the threads being stress risers.

You are correct. Some people learn the significance of chute lever arm action the hard way when it bites them in a streamliner or lakester. With more than 30yrs of running liners I've advised a lot of newbee's about this, some listen, some don't. The first time Bobby Moore went over 350 in the Maro Special it bit him, he survived, sold the liner & quit racing.

uhhhh Matt if you use 8.8 grade bolts, they have a maximum strength of 800 N/mm² and they will plasticly deform at 80% of that, so they have a yield strength at 640 N/mm². not 1000 N/mm². In the end, those bolts can still hold 144kN, or about 14,000 kg of weight. So its fine.

That was much more content-filled than the trailer video. I was surprised to find that I wasn't even watching it on 1.5x speed. Converting a boat trailer for that thing will still be a very silly choice, until you inevitably start welding tool boxes to it. I suggest portable power stuff, sockets for shade poles (non-motorized), a grill, cooler and seating. Those are what all boat trailers are missing, and it's about time they stop being missing. Of course, you could use solar panels for shade too, but you should probably put an airgap under them to reduce the radiant heating.

6:44 Is it not more important to calculate whether the bolts can withstand the forces due to torque from side loading ,rather than the forces due to deceleration? The side loading will get amplified due to the mount being narrow and the tail being long.
@12x2richter
@12x2richter Жыл бұрын
You may be right, I think the issue is more though that even though sideways force has more lever action, it's going to be much much less than the instant deceleration load. Like 20 mph wind from the side is more stress than the same force pulling backwards, but if you get the same force from the side that you would under parachute deceleration, you're already well into other, much more significant problems.
