I just noticed that he specifically says to put your backstep foot at the top of the triangle but then whenever he does the throw it is over to the side like what he says is the traditional foot placement.

Thats a beautiful style. Exploiting kuzishi and preparing the impact into a sudden death dimension. Respect Tai Otoshi is a common throw, learned very early in the gokyo, but it has a very technical remit. In shiai, gradings, randori, uchi komi and even kata, it is often executed loosely, as it is notoriously difficult to master. This variant has shades of soto makikomi about it. I think this is a superb demonstration. Im now retired from club/regional level, but would recommend this highly as an excellent lesson

He instructs you to place your foot at the top of the triangle but he never does so when he's actually executing.

The way I learned tai otoshi was to have my dropped foot way further out. I like this part most of this variation that its done very close to uke.

Very nice explanation, but it seems like your knee might be in danger with this version. I was taught to turn the right leg such that the knee points into the mat, so if the throw does not fully succeed Uke can't fall on it and bend it sideways. What do you think?

I think that Travis Stevens is a 6th dan black belt ,3 times olympian (silver medal in 2016) so it's probably the right way to do it 😅

He is wearing his jiu jitsu brown belt (he is a black belt now under Henzo Gracie I believe). Travis is certainly a judo black belt having won a silver medal in the 2016 Olympic games.

In Mexico is a go kyu technique or orange belt, it can be a little difficult to those people with short legs but in general it culd be called a begginers technique.

You didn't take point on triangle when you showed your - moving - movement! 1:09 Also this movement (imo) must be done/complete quickly/smoothly, otherwise I slip/pass/maybe fold you @ your L in this case. Nice movement though. I apologize coming as instructor-type, I am not....
