My forefathers landed at Ayala Cove in 1775 on Angel Island, the first Europeans to enter into the Bay Area. I'm about 20% Native America but I don't know what tribe I'm from. I'd like to consider myself Tamien since it's all I've ever known (land wise) and my family has been here for a couple hundred years now. What are the qualifying factors for gaining membership to the tribe?

First of all this video is incorrect. The "Americans did not take over". First it was the Spanish, then Mexico, then after that "the Americans" came. But how can it be shown that this tribe was a "real thing" when in fact the Ohlone peoples were here already? It is hard not to see this as an attempt to gain land for whatever reason. We already have open space and parks and they can use this. Just because one got a tattoo that maybe could be based on Ohlone pictures from the past or because you bought a bunch of beaded necklaces does not mean you get to invent a tribe. I think maybe the end game is actually different than what is said here. Also to propose re-naming our DeAnza College because he did bad things way back in the day when there was plenty of warfare committed by all tribes in the West at one time or another smacks with more than a tad bit of hypocrisy in my view.
