I think vista was my favorite version of windows even if just for its crazy development cycle. I was always reading updates on the longhorn development and it feels crazy to think there was basically a whole version of windows that didn't release. This is probably why vista wasn't very well accepted by people. It was too hard on many systems originally running xp and driver support was a mess which wasn't even vista's fault

I loved Vista! Used it for 9 years... Sure it was a little sluggish at first because, among other reasons, MS was way too optimistic about its system requirements, but once I gave it more RAM, and installed SP 1, it was both brilliant and beautiful! Just for fun, I re-installed it on that same old 2007 laptop, last week, this time with 3GB RAM (Max. usable on this 32-bit system) and a faster 7200 RPM HDD, and it is flying! ;-]

My high school used Tangent branded PCs back in the mod 90s. Nothing about them said "medical" at all. They were made of commodity parts. I suspect Tangent specialized in medical systems later on.

That great info! I suspect you are correct. Since the release of the video, I had a couple of close viewers who work in the medical industry contact me and let me know that they have come across or use these today! So neat. The materials have microbial materials to defend against infections or spread of disease which makes sense. Again, a neat concept.

@@TheRetroRecall They probably did the same thing I did: move upmarket. Staying competitive became difficult as the bottom fell out of PC prices in the early 2000s. I learned I could make more money specializing in high-end niche hardware, which led to working on SGI machines, some of which were used to run CT and MRI machines. You just deal with a better cut of people when time is money, corners can't be cut, and customers are willing to pay accordingly.

The high-pitched sound emitted by the PSU was likely what's called "coil whine". In some lower-quality power supplies, there can be noise emitted by components under little or no load. If that is the case, I wouldn't worry too much - chalk it up to cheap parts. Now, if the whine is persistent or increascaes under a heavy load, then you can be sure of impending failure. Hard to say much more without looking at it carefully / testing at a component level. I'm a computer systems engineer with over 20 years experience, so I've seen plenty of weird power issues. I really enjoy your videos, and always get excited when you post a new one! Keep up the amazing work :)

@@TheRetroRecallI would daresay if you can get a 750ti low profile and a dram ssd, you could probably build a gaming PC that'd handle most stuff up to 2014-2015 just fine. I wouldn't bother with a low profile 1050 as it will bottleneck, plus stuff that the 1050 could do the C2D could not. Now it's possible you could get a C2QE on that, but...I mean at that point how much do you want to invest, in something that you'd be at the dead end of and only just matching the bottom of a 1st or 2nd gen i3 in terms of overall perf., right?

'People wanted to stay with XP and didn't wanna go to Vista.' - That sounds like the situation with Win11 currently, people wanna stick with Win10 and MS is trying their hardest to get everyone on Win11, and that's on top of Win11 not being officially compatible with any hardware older than Intel 8th-gen or AMD Zen+ respectively, effectively rendering otherwise still viable hardware on Intel 7th-gen or AMD Zen1 silicon obsolete in their eyes, which will likely cause a very small uptick in Linux adoption.

Btw motherboard is an oem version of the " MSI G31M3-F " It takes 1333 fsb cpus & supports the 95w core 2 quads fine if you want too take it that far actually, might need a bios update though for q8xxx & q9xxx core 2 quads.

I would upgrade the CPU to E8500, 3.00GHz, not what appers to me to be a E4300 at 1.8GHz. Not enough for Vista. I would install 4GB RAM if 32 bit OS and 8 GB if 64 bit OS. Memory speed should be 800MHz. I beleive PC6400, your going to want it fast with Vista. I would also try to find a compatible GPU. It will need to be a low profile GPU to fit in the 1 X16 slot available on main board. Cap plague, so chang out caps on mainboard. Don't trust that PSU, it is failed. Sometimes they fail and will run under partial load, but not full load.

Yet another red MSI board with bad caps. About a decade ago, we got our PC supplier to get his dad to recap about 40 of our Core 2 based PC's that all had bad caps on similar MSI boards. That was my introduction to the capacitor plague and made me forever wary of MSI as a brand.

@@TheRetroRecall I wasn't aware it was even a thing until I started in my current job and then only after a few years. Manufacturers really cut corners during that time period to save a few cents per board by using inferior caps, only to have it come back and bit them in the backside when those caps gave up. I later realised that it the damage done was so bad that advertising your product had all solid or certain premium Japanese caps became a selling point that was put on the front of the box!

This era of computing is one of ugly duckling PCs these days. Early Core (as in Core i3, i5, i7) generations still get refurbished for light modern usage whereas older systems (not completely sure about Pentium 4's, Pentium III's and older definitely) are vintage already in variable degrees so they have some kind of value. Core 2 Duos however do not seem to fit either bill and get dumped typically- I like watching these get some love. When will they be valuable again (if ever)? Who knows.
