Strangely, the Stryker is not an apc. Instead, it is cross between an apc and an ifv. It has the armor of an apc but the weaponry of an ifv, which allows it act as a lighter ifv for medium-weight brigades, which have weight restrictions placed on them so they can be easily airlifted. For reference the Bradly is generally considered for use by high-weight units, while trucks/ mraps are used by light or supporting units.

The great tragedy of Mriya is that it was a project Ukraine could only accomplish with significant support from other Soviet countries, broke records, has contributed to Ukraine's economic productivity after the Union's collapse, and has been an overwhelming force for good in the world through countless scientific, commercial, and humanitarian missions. You could call it not only a symbol of Ukrainian accomplish, but also to a lesser extent, a real example of what the united Soviet countries could do when they worked together, a marvel of aerospace engineering only achievable through collaboration and cooperation. And it was destroyed by a petty little man who wanted to be the next Stalin.

Just to expand on the mortars a bit since I was one when I was in the U.S. Marines aka Uncle Sam Misguided Children. The mortar is used as hip pocket artillery at the company level and below. For example a lot of the guns talked about would usually only be able to called on by the battalion level command staff. So if the company or platoon needs more indirect fire support the would call on the 81 mm mortar. For the squad or fire team level they would call on the 60mm mortar. Mortar can also provide battlefield illumination. We do this by firing star or illumination round into the sky. We can fire these rounds so just the other side is lit up and our guys are still covered by darkness.

Great video! Regarding the AN-225, I believe it _will_ fly again, for a few reasons; 1) It is so unique, that its loss will make certain types of air freight literally impossible to move. There will _always_ be a market for at least _one_ AN-225. And with Airbus's abandonment of the A380 as an entire type, and Boeing's plans to discontinue the 747, Antonov will be well-placed to not only rebuild it, but perhaps make a _successor_ to the AN-225. 2) There exists a second AN-225 frame; assuming it wasn't also destroyed, they already have a head start. 3) The AN-225 was literally build out of the AN-124, an airframe that was in production until recently, and was even considered to _resume_ production with Russian support until Russian invaded in 2014. As per Wikipedia's article, they added frames to a standard AN-124, which is a common practice for airliners (ie. 737, 747, etc). Therefore, the only parts they would need to re-engineer is the unique parts. And even with that in mind, they'd likely settle with modern replacements, such as a full glass cockpit. 4) The west will likely want to start buying from Ukraine, as they would now be _heavily_ western-focused. Antonov could make a _killing_ selling their products to the West, with the benefits, access, and expertise of Western technology. She will fly again. The question is in what form.

@whyjnot420

@@wuodanstrasse5631 To be fair, all internal combustion engines have a sweet spot where they are the most efficient. This is the whole reason for cars containing transmissions with 6+ gears in them. Anytime such an engine is below or above that spot, they are using more gas than they would otherwise need to (to maintain the desired speed or amount of acceleration), and performance drops off pretty dramatically (generally speaking) especially when you move to higher RPMs than the sweet spot for whatever particular engine one might be talking about. One way you can see an example of this, is how really slow drivers can (depending on the car and what the car has) often have worse fuel economy than people who drive at moderate speeds or just a little faster than limits. (From personal experience, I had a car that wanted to do 73 mph, at that speed it would get approximately 1/5 to 1/3 better economy than at 60-65 mph, as measured by the cars computer.) caveat: I know I referenced cars a bit here and the topic is tank engines. But much of what holds true for a gas or diesel engine in a car holds true when you scale the same basic thing up to what a tank needs. edit: as an interesting aside; I think it was either the Bugatti Veyron or Chiron that got about 1.5-2 miles per gallon at top speed and thus could empty its gas tank in something like 15 min at that speed. Granted we are talking about 200+ here, but still, interesting that it goes that ludicrously fast when _at_ speed.... (though most cars if you slam the gas pedal will chug gas at a similar rate, that is just for the acceleration period, not the cruising at speed period after acceleration... which does raise the question of just how much gas one of those supercars or hypercars uses during acceleration.)
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 2 жыл бұрын
To add to this, combustion engines in general are more efficient under moderate load and low RPM. At lower speeds, you need a lower gear just to have the torque to move because engines have shit power below 1K rpm, which results in more revolutions to travel the same distance. This results in the best efficiency at the top gear, moderate load, moderate RPM. Both Piston engines and Turbine engines can be made to have pretty good efficiency at peak power, however when idle Turbine engines still need a lot of power just to keep the air flow compressed and burning. If the turbines slow down too much, the engine straight up becomes incapable of maintaining the pressures needed for combustion. Piston engines, however, use valves instead of mass air flow to maintain pressure, meaning they don't need a lot of energy to maintain enough momentum to keep spinning. The main benefit of turbines is how power-dense they are, reducing overall weight for equivalent or better HP. Though I recall M1s being equipped with a small generator so they can keep the electrical system powered without needing to keep the main turbine sucking fuel for no reason.

3,400-3,500 active duty pre-war. 11,200 reserve (active duty models only). It’s impossible to know how many active duty model tank in the reserve are operational. However, when the Korean War broke out, the Americans had about 10,000 Shermans built for WW2 in warehouses across the US. Of these, 3,000-3,500 were able to be activated for operational duty. So of the Russian tanks in reserve, they could probably put out about 4,000 (11,200 X 35%) tanks absolute maximum. Seeing as how the Russians’ tanks have been in reserve for longer than those Shermans and are more technologically complex than a WW2 era Sherman, I’d say the above is a more than generous estimate.

Systems particularly night vision infrared systems and similar systems. I have no info on this but I would guess not many. Due to training the Ukrainiabs have some familiarity with night operations. I have a close relative who serves in an Artillery unit of the US Army. He and I have spoken often on the War in Ukraine. One of the things that the Russians are supposed to be known for is massed and precision Artillery fire. The way that the whole campaign in the Donbas area has evolved does not demonstrate this at all. As we know, there were trench systems and many fixed fortifications set up by the Ukrainians during the 8 years between 2014 and 2022. And yet, little to no progress is being made against these lines which should be perfect for artillery strikes. Given how poorly the maneuver elements of the Russian Army have done, the much less visible failure of the primary destruction arm of the Russian Army is perhaps less confounding. But the inability to get firepower from either Artillery or Air Power by the Russians - who should have significant advantages in both - is well outside previous estimations. The other thing that is apparently very wrong is that this person compared their personal kit to that of a known VDV member kit. These seemed comparable to him. It is clear that the average Russian soldier has much less and much lower quality kit. And this extends to vehicles and not just personal kit.

Also, the two Kamovs - the Ka-50 Black shark and the Ka-52 Aligator - are different helicopters... one is a single seater rotary aircraft equivalent of a fighter jet and is virtually non existant, and the other is the two seater reconaissance/SEAD wide boi that keeps getting blown out of the sky by ATGMs while neatly hovering above enemy territory.

@@abbottshaull9831 I don't know. For me it looks more like it's their outdated land doctrine and the training they receiced in accordance to this, that makes them loose so many tanks. There are hundereds of videos about Russian tanks in this invasion out there and most of them that I'm aware of, show them using their tanks in a WW2 or early Cold War doctrine. Not protected by nearby infantry, IFVs, airforce; just fighting in columns or in cooperation with other tank comrades, solely against the enemy. No combined arms warfare whatshowever. They also really seem to hate simple protection counter-measures, like deploying a smoke screen for some weird reason. This one actually puzzles me a lot. Another strange behavior is, that there are plenty of videos out there, where Russian tanks stupidly hold their position, while being fired upon. When the buddy next to you got hit by an ATGM, you move and change position and report this encounter to the guys who can do something against this. And preferably deploy a smoke screen at the same time.

Interesting thing to note in relation to the overall evolution of vehicles into IFVs. Take a look at the development of cruisers in the beginning of the age of iron ships through to around the beginning of the dreadnought era. You essentially go from fast, iron, unarmored ships or ships with rudimentary armor into protected cruisers and then basically immediately into armored cruisers. Protected cruisers share similarities with APCs in that they have some armor, some fighting ability but that is not really meant for them to slug it out. Armored cruisers share similarities with IFVs in that they are both much more "fighting designs" but neither are up there with the real heavyweights (battleships and tanks). Yet are still designed to be able to dish it out in support of infantry (or with armored cruisers, actually forming a secondary battle line in some tactics). While the means to do the tasks differ due to where they are being done, there are some interesting parallels with the concepts and overall form of the designs used. What use is this to note? who cares, its interesting to me. :)

Your first point about tank battles was illustrated perfectly by The Operations Room's (channel) video called "Desert Storm - The Ground War...". Basically the Iraqi tanks had zero chance against the US (well, NATO), because the latter could "see" a few km further out than the Iraqis. Iraqi tanks had no idea what hit them before they were completely destroyed.

Easiest way to differentiate between APC and IFV is the main weapon. IFV = 20mm main weapon or larger (Specialized variants may have smaller weapons eg. command variant) APC = smaller than 20mm (Specialized variants may have larger weapons eg. AT variant) I don't think that it's set in stone, but it's a good place to start.

Though very impressed with the simplicity and durability of the tested version of the AT4, the US Army saw some room for improvement, specifically the addition of rear and front bumpers on the launch tube and changes to the sights and slings. After these changes, the AT4 was adopted by the US Army as the Lightweight Multipurpose Weapon M136.[12] The Swedish Army also recognized these improvements and subsequently adopted the Americanized version of the AT4

Brads didn't behave great against IEDs. Apparently putting the fuel between the belly armor and the floor of the crew compartment wasn't as clever an idea as it seemed in the 70s. That's apparently been fixed in the most recent versions, for those few units that have those.

The TOS-1 is a very short ranged weapon designed to be used in a quite different way that every other MLRS. It's designed to provide massive firepower on a fortified area as part of the pre-assault prep. I'm not even sure it it's got a FDC or is is direct fire only. Though every Soviet derived MLRS has direct fire sights and at least the Russians practice direct fire.
