The 'TapeTop' was one of the most unusual, rare and unique tape playback system formats I have seen in my life. This machine was vary simple and basic in operation. It involved an rather peculiar design of tape cartridge which, in appearance, resembled the roof of Space Mountain, in its sloping shape. The tape cartridge itself contained virtually all of what was needed for tape playback, including the tape loop, the pickup heads, the guides, tension arms, rollers and basic wiring, and all of this was driven by a capstan motor that protruded the top centre of the playback machine. You placed the tape cartridge onto the top of the player, snapped the cartridge into place, connected the tape cartridge to the player via a DIN cable, turned the player on and set your volume and tone levels and viola! You had a background music system that would play a 22-hour tape for the house of your restaurant, retail store, factory work area, office, whatever.
The sample you are hearing is from 'Showtime,' one of the tapes that were offered in the TapeTop libraries. This tape offered many cover versions as well as original versions of showtues from Broadway stage and top movies of the day.
The TapeTop was an automatic, 4-programme, monaural background music tape system that was produced and offered for lease or sale to businesses by a now defunct company called Music Theater Network. This unusual and rather peculiar tape playback system was manufactured for only a few years, probably due to the overall expense, bulkiness and unreliability of the system.
