Hi Ana, Your deck is absolutely beautiful and you created a great context for each of the cards. Lovely of you to do a walk-through as well. However, my question to you is, why don't we see any diversity at all in this deck? If you included people of colour in it, different body types etc it would be perfect. Now, I personally won't invest in it as I want people who I read for to see themselves in the cards.
@anatourian808410 ай бұрын
Hi there, so I actually did include people of color, hispanic and elderly. However, I do see your point, there is not much variation in body types. But it's never going to be a perfect deck, just as I am imperfect. We strive for it always as artists, to present the world, but it really is a learning process for us too. I started off making decks because of the same feelings you have. I didn't see what I wanted in the decks out there, or I didn't find it all incorporated. We find pieces of it here and there. Thank you for your imput, I will take it into consideration for the future.
@Tarotismagic10 ай бұрын
@@anatourian8084 Hi Ana, I stay corrected, you did include a handful of people of colour and there definitely is the age diversity in your deck. However, when it comes to inclusive decks there is more to it than just including a handful of ppl of colour/age in your art. A lot of decks are created with white audience in mind, which is not ok, as tarot readers, enthusiasts come from many different places in this beautiful world and will use your deck. On this note, it is important that the artist does a proper research into the cultures they are portraying in their decks and that they check themselves and their own biases/stereotypes they might believe in that are not at all right. I am mentioning this here because the "Shaman card" in your Tarot of the Abbys portrays Indigenous person of America in a wrong, stereotypical way. Firstly, different Indigenous tribes have different clothing, cultural and spiritual practices. Secondly, the person on your "Shaman" card wears a "Hollywoodised" clothing and is there assisting a "white hero" to become enlightened or spiritually connected - I hope you can see the problem in this? What I am trying to say is, the poc in your decks feel like they were used as tokens. This is when the artist uses a person of colour/queer/disabled person etc. in their deck for only specific cards (usually stereotypically seen qualities) or just in one or two cards so they can call their deck "diverse". I am glad to read that you ARE open to these important conversations. Thankfully there are some tarot creators who are willing to have these perhaps uncomfortable but important conversations and go back and improve their decks. Thank you for taking the time to read this comment. It is not meant as an attack but rather something you can have a "7 of cups" moment with and explore your inner perceptions and stereotypes you might hold within yourself without realising. Noone is perfect (I definitely am FAR from it) but what makes one a good person is the willingness to educate oneself, change one's ways of seeing, thinking and then being and living in this world. 🙏

@@Tarotismagic I’ll try to explain and hopefully it will make sense, it’s hard through text, and much is lost or misinterpreted. I think there’s a bit of a confusion in terms of my artistic style. I am fantasy artists that depicts fictional characters in tarot. I never claimed to depict historically accurate characters or stories. Meaning I work from my imagination. My intention is to present different ways of telling the meanings of the cards, and perhaps if lucky, to bring out some of their magic. The people I depict are there only to help you connect to the concept of that card. Not a historical period, culture or person. If anything, I’d like to NOT do that, in order to not take away from my primal premise, that of purely illustrating the concepts and archetypes of the Tarot. I think it actually takes away from the magic of the cards when you introduce human history. Because your mind then starts to dissect things, and alas, the whole purpose to delve into a world of introspection is gone. I’ll give you an example from my own personal experience. I am Romanian, and believe me, there are no vampires in my culture. The stories that have been created about them, have been done by taking elements from Romanian folk culture and bastardized. Vlad Țepeș was and is a beloved ruler for Romanians not a vampire. Yet everything you hear or see is a bloodthirsty vampire. Why am I bringing this up? I see decks that really don’t represent the Romanian culture, folklore or myths. All vampire decks are based on my culture to the core. So should I go and try to remove those decks for propagating this story? Is it bad that they are out there? Were the artists insensitive in creating them? In terms of Tarot, from my point of view, not at all. If we’re talking historical movies, yes, I take issue with that. These vampire decks enrich the tarot world and help people in some shape or form. Because they are just that. Tools. As far as the “token” people you mention. I don’t do that, it’s not my thing. Any character that I include in a deck is there because I “felt” it needed to be there. If you force something it doesn’t work. I don’t plan out my decks, I have no bullet points I go on. I’m not aiming to check off all the marks. Because I never will be able to do that. It’s not humanly possible 😅 So, in the end, I think it really depends what type of reader you are. If you feel that historically accurate depictions and details are important to you, then that is something that you should pursue and really try to bring or create somehow. And that is totally viable, there are a lot of wonderful artists that strive on historical illustrations and are looking for an opportunity to create in that style. You’d be contributing to the community greatly. Because I’m sure there are others who are looking for similar decks they can connect with. I do hope in the end, you will find your deck, the one that will indeed call to your soul. I hope this has cleared some of the confusion of my personal type of art and the intention behind my creative process.

I appreciate that you are commenting on the vampire decks from the cultural point of view of Romanian heritage - and, you are seeing them as a valid tool for some readers. The notion of misappropriating various cultures in decks has been a problem discussed on many tarot channels. As a white cis-gender female (I am speaking of myself), it can be challenging to express compassion, inclusion in just the right words or artistic style. I have been berated on my channel as often as I have been commended. When I work with a deck such as Dust II Onyx, I look beyond the skin, through the eyes. I find myself wandering in past corridors of other lifetimes. Do I carry any strands of black DNA in my coarse, wavy hair? Probably not, but as long as I feel a deep emotional connection with the cards, does it matter? I spend months playing with "The Romany Spread" and working with variations on this 21-card complex way of telling a story. Am I not permitted to use it or alter it or work with it because I am not of this heritage? Some would argue loudly, yes! I studied Shamanism from a white woman who studied with elders in Peru and learned the way of the people of the Andes and the Quechua language. She brought her experience back to Canada and began to work with the indigenous community in her town there. She shared stories, lessons and found ways to connect. She brought the elders of Peru to her town and connected the indigenous shamans from different communities. When I share these traditions with students or clients, it is from the heart and power of connection. Why am I sharing all this? Decks are created, I believe, from the life (and lifetimes) of experience of the deck creator both conscious as well as beyond consciousness. I often see faces as a hologram, allowing skin colour to change and morph. I want to give deck creators space to create, not berrate them for not creating what I want. We all have to right to not purchase a deck or to sell it soon after cracking the seal. Not all decks are for everyone. Now back to watching your walkthrough . . . I am enjoying listening to you describe your work.
@anatourian808410 ай бұрын
@@IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana I agree, I think there is a "beyond consciousness" element to it. Especially when it comes to making Tarot. When we paint it/ create it, the ideas really pop up sometimes out of thin air, or so we think. There is a layer that we don't see, and in terms of the images that are depicted, they really don't have time or space. They should exist independently, at least that's how I see it. I love the Dust II Onyx, I think it's a beautiful deck indeed. I hope it will go mass market, because there really isn't anything like it out there.
