Welcome back to Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers, where our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon kick things off with a hair-raising encounter with a static filled hotel bed, setting the stage for a conversation about the shocking reality of paper waste in schools.
We're moved by how a teacher's quick thinking prevented a student from choking, illustrating the unexpected roles educators play beyond just teaching.
The dialogue takes a serious turn, addressing teacher rights and the quest for deserved compensation, yet the passion for teaching shines through the hard times.
Whether you're in it for the laughs, the stories, or a mix of both, this episode promises to deliver.

Maine science teacher here. Winter is rough - every time I touch my magnetic whiteboard I yelp… super shocking! I do love to teach electricity though - lots of “hands on” experience. Try peeling a sweater off in the dark. It’s your own private fireworks display.

As someone who grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and moved to PA, I am cracking up at the story of your first static electricity experience! My kiddo used to love putting the covers over our heads, running our hands over the sheets and enjoying the light show.

Take a hot steamy shower and leave the door open so it fogs the place over. We have almost lost a TV because of static. We have installed an entire house humidifier. I live in the Neb/Co/WY area

Paper airplanes are not allowed at my kids’ elementary school (too distracting and can hit someone in the face), but fortune tellers, snowflakes, jumping frogs, and other paper folding/crafts are alive and well!

One of my favorite gifts from a student: a composite figure of a mouse in front of a blackboard. The student had painted the figure including putting a math equation on the blackboard (my subject). It’s been over 20 years, and I still remember the work I put into getting his parent to get his eyes checked and glasses bought for him. Once he could see the board he did so much better in class. I sincerely hope he is doing well.

6:17 i was like 7 or 8 up in Pennsylvania, and i was sleeping on the couch after a long night of monsters under my bed. I pulled up my blanket to get warmer and i saw all the sparks and thought i was going to catch fire

Travel with some static guard spray!! I was shocked (see what I did there?) at the fact that it was a new experience for you. I live in Ohio, so static is a regular thing in the winter!

It's amazing to me that teachers sometimes don't need to have CPR & First-aid training.... I have had to get this training pre-pandemic to be a sub in NY, and then I became an art teacher for 3 years in VA where it lapsed. I haven't had to renew it until I quit and started working PT at a before-school / after-school setting in a VA public school. Even my team of college/HS kids has to have it. The company provides it in school gyms 😅

Yes...despite being next to the Atlantic Ocean, the air in winters in Maine are very dry. Running a steamy shower with the bathroom door open may help. Please come back in the Spring. Glad you got to go to Becky's Diner!

I definitely think teachers and staff should be trained. I also saw a video where the gym teacher saved a student from choking

I’m definitely a type B teacher. My husband is an A (although he’s not a teacher). He’s always stressed. Just a suggestion but can you start putting chapters in your videos?

On the CPR and Heimlich maneuver, in my state it is a requirement that students learn CPR before we graduate high school. I just finished my freshman year, and we had to learn it in the required health/pe class taken that year. I'm not 100% sure where I learned the Heimlich, but I believe we learned that in elementary school. So, schools are taking initiative for students to graduate with this knowledge, but it would be great for teachers to have a refresher!

I’m a type a teacher with some b sprinkled in. lol. I don’t care how you get your job done, just that it’s done to the best of your ability. What really gets me though is the type B teachers who think that all type A’s have to have it their way so they just sit back and wait for it to be done for them. Then the type a teacher looks like the bad guy. We’ve got several of those in my building.

When I was in kindergarten, I choked on a piece of candy during reading time. My teacher had to do the Heimlich maneuver on me. Thank heavens she knew what to do! You guys should collaborate with Dr. Mike. It could be really beneficial. He is the reason those chest compression machines are in the airports.

My county (district) we are required to all have our CPR training. As a preschool teacher we are required to have CPR training. I’ve never known anything different, so definitely strange to hear that it’s not required everywhere.
Cheers to the parents, coaches, and private tutors!
