How can anyone do a technical debrief of a formula one car over the phone while in another country? The MP4/8 may have had its problems, but Michaels was simply that he chose to do it as his dad did and still live in the USA. Unlike the 70's when Mario raced F1, these 1993 cars were highly technical machines and gone were the days when a driver could fly in, win or get a podium and then fly home. He needed time in the car and living in the US was a mistake.

Agreed, for a driver with no F1 experience in an era when the cars were more technically advanced than they had been before or since he needed to be with the team at every available opportunity, at the factory and in testing. What happened was that when it came to testing they invariably used Mika Hakkinen instead as he was available, very fast, very highly rated and the team valued his feedback. If Andretti had based himself in the UK it might have improved his chances of succeeding for sure, like you say, his dad commuted but it was a very different kettle of fish back in the 70s.

Peter Hunter I wonder if Indy cars had carbon ceramic brakes at the time. Michael said the performance was similar,but, f1 brakes were much more quick to stop. He seems to have such a horrible time at in F1. Just hating everything in the process.
