Jose threw himself under the bus because he didnt get the signings he wanted in that last summer. When he was sacked not a single journo or fan thought it was the wrong decision. Just having good talents doesnt translate to a great team. Pogba was a board buy that jose did not want, Sanchez was a board buy he did not want (he wanted perisic instead of him) and lukaku was a 4th option out of greizmann, morata, belotti. You then add in the other cogs of the team surrounding them and you have a back four of young, phil jones, smalling, Valencia which was no where near top 6 standard, and then rashford who is not top 6 standard, and then a midfield in matic, pogba, hererra/lingard that paled in comparison to the top 6 and you're dealing with a dysfunctional team with poor squad depth. The signings after Jose left became better but results got worse under other managers hence why Jose overchieved
