BYU is currently on pace to become the fourth ever high-major to shoot more three-pointers than two-pointers in a season. This video breaks down the X's and O's, offensive concepts, and players behind Mark Pope's 5-Out offensive scheme. Including the Cougars' use of "zoom" action.

Anyone go to the press conference today in Rupp? Completely filled, standing room only in the corridors and stopped letting people into the main building. 30,000+ people showed up to see the introduction of Coach Mark Pope. 5,000-10,000 were turned away :)

The defense in the NBA is harder now because of rule changes and them taking away hand checking. You can't touch a player in the league now without an official calling a foul. It's a shame TBH.

@@purdmangolf the NBA has always had skilled players and athletes, but after the pistons won an NBA championship from playing dominant defense they changed alot of stuff. I really wish they would bring back hand checking because alot of players that score alot in the league would be getting shut down. The game is to score baskets and keep the other team from scoring baskets, when you basically handicap the defense by the way the game is called is a true shame. Because we will never see another player like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant because those guys were built off the defense they faced and competition they went up against on a game by game basis. Imagine trying to guard anybody without being allowed to put your hands on them, then imagine how much easier it would be if you could put a hand on them and keep them from going in certain directions, the NBA went downhill from that point imo. If they brought it back it could literally make the NBA 10 times better and it wouldnt be a 3 point shooting contest every game when you can run dudes off the line.
@purdmangolf
@purdmangolf 7 ай бұрын
@@Wetrockstah2116 yeah but imagine MJ and Kobe facing contestant double teams and zone defenses and help schemes like the modern nba allows. Illegal defense barely allowed help defense in the 80s and 90s. The nba certainly did not always have the average skill level, ball handling ability, shooting prowess that it has today. 20 players made over 200 3s last season, in 1996 only 3 players did. 36 players shot over 40% from deep last year. 17 did it in 1996. In my opinion the nba is the best it has ever been and you are glorifying the hand check era with rose tinted lenses. Obviously certain things may be going a bit too far, like the lack of traveling enforcement and carrying, and excessive foul baiting (which they are fighting back against). But the league has Steph, Lebron, Giannis, SGA, Wemby, Jokic, Embiid, Zion, Luka, Durant, Kawhi, Kyrie, Brunson, Haliburton, AD, the beard, the brow, Sengun, Banchero, Randle, Porzingis, Trae Young…the list of incredibly skilled and entertaining and tough amazing players goes on and on and yet you’re stuck on Jordan and Kobe. Oh yeah I almost forgot this old guy named LeBron. I would like to know what you think hand checking could do to deter a guy like Steph. Or Zion. Or Gianni’s. Etc. Imagine those guys playing when sagging off your man weak side to help was basically not allowed. Packing the paint, not allowed. The defense was better back then because the offensive spacing was worse and the lane was clogged because everyone hung out inside the three point line. Defenders now are far quicker stronger more explosive and athletic and the defensive schemes more advanced.

BYU makes it hard for opposing teams to even think about doubling the post because they run a lot of empty side action to keep help D away from the post. If the D wants to try and bother the post or bring an extra helper, they have to bring them all the way over from the opposite side of the floor and it exposes their D and puts them at a huge disadvantage.

Pope has done an amazing job IMO of adapting the offense even within conference play. @@theknubbles5075 It could really go either way. BYU is a unique job. It is hard to recruit the best talent here because of the honor code, but I think Pope has done really really well in getting as good of talent as he can get. He’s a very hard working and good recruiter. Want he doesn’t have is any titles or tournament wins. IMO, his coaching has definitely lost us games, including our most recent tournament loss to Duquesne. It’s tough to say whether or not the superior talent he will get at UK will be able to get him over the edge of winning tournament games. I assume it will, but wining 1-2 tournament games isn’t what UK aspires to, so who really knows if he can go all the way. Hasn’t shown it yet, but he also hasn’t had the talent and recruiting tools to possibly get him there.

Currently they have a 6'7 Dennis Rodman 2.0 named Andersson Garcia from the Dominican Republic and he is currently SECOND in the nation for offensive rebounding. All while coming off the bench. Guy had a 2 game sec stretch with 33 total rebounds and almost half were offensive!

Hi Jordan. The fake handoff read in zoom action really looks like a movefrom the triangle offense, pinch post action. Old centers, less mobile than today, used to do this all the time for the guards.

Zoom action is something UK fans be asking for 4 years, From Cal. We never had backdoor cuts outside of This past year we had some. But this system is perfect for College basketball if u can get a dominant Center then We Will COOK!

Great analysis. Have you ever considered how similar this is to the 49ers' offense when Deebo is playing? Same schemes, different ball.

Now he's going to run this offense, but with much better talent. Could anyone really imagine how crazy last years squad would've been with any other coach but Cal. Unlocking Rob and Reed, and have 3 7 footers that they could work with, along with arguably the best scorer in the country in Antonio Reeves.

More 3's you take per game. Less game to game variance there should be in averages. Play at a faster pace more opportunities there will be to shoot from behind the arc.

yeah, but this is predicated on making 3s consistently. how many losses can you take until you're consistent enough to start winning?

@@_ben_miller If percentages are high enough & you take enough per game. In game consistency might be neglible. Which is the idea for my post.' Never seen statistical analysis of the relationship by should work in practice. Especially if your defense solid. Seemed to work for the Warriors in the NBA.

@@aaronpeters6209 , i believe you have to make around 44% of your 3s to guarantee you will beat a team shooting 2s at a 50% clip. if you think about it, if either team shoots an odd number of shots, that is room for the other team to have a higher score by the end of that amount of given shots, since a miss can be allocated to that slot while a make can be allotted to the other team's score. if we take a game of 6 shots each (for easy math), with 50% 2's and 33% 3s, the game will end with the same score. howevever, if you end the game at a different number, you lose that. also, it should be noted that making 33% of your 3s is not a formula for winning, but a formula for tying a 50% 2s team. if both teams take 3 shots (or any multiple of 3), it's guaranteed that a tie will not happen, since 0% means no team is hitting their mark, and the 2s team will always have an even numbered score (not including free throws, which is another factor why shooting 3s is risky). in this case, there is only a 33% chance that the 3 point team will have a higher score than the 2 point team by the end of 3 shots, whereas the 2 point team has a 50% chance of losing and winning. if you only shoot 3s and make them at 1/3 rate, you can have less points than the 2s by each shot in 10/18's of the scenarios you have when you combine the 2 scenarios where the 2 point team makes 1 shot over 3 attempts and the one where it makes 2 out of 3 attempts. 100/18x8=44.444 this is the minimal number of makes you need to ensure that, if the game ends at any shot attempts, you wil have a higher score. in the case of only 33% 3s vs 50% 2s, the 2's have a 55% chance of ending with a higher score at any given point.

Damn, I didn't know WVU jacked up that many 3s, I thought they were just knocking them down as an exception in the tournament. Not sure if BYU is better than those WVU teams, Pittsnogle (can't forget that name) was just knocking down 3s. They went to the Sweet 16 in 06 and Elite 8 the year before, knocking off CP3's Wake Forest in the process. Man, takes me back, but I seriously had no idea they were jacking up so many 3s for really any era.
