In case you get the opportunity to play at a higher level tho, give it some thought. It's good to make big goals, so that you will get better and better at something by trying to achieve them. @@clutch186 Not great, I guess I was a little too confident that it was gon be easy, but my team and I didn’t play our best. I guess I could say it was cause one of the hoops was a little low, or they did better than I thought, but honestly I just threw the game. Score was 68 45, it wouldn’t have been that bad if we hadn’t subbed out at the end with 2minutes left down 12. Positives were I hit 13 points, tho with bad consistency, it I hit my first three pointer and was draining my mid range. I didn’t get any layups, we had the height, but they could body us, ig we weren’t used to playing that physically. We CAN definitely beat them, we should next time hopefully.

I’m a junior playing D3 basketball rn and the quality of my work ethic definitely contributed to each destination/chapter I’ve landed in so far. I think I worked harder in high school than I am in college rn but the difference in my work ethic is really in strategy and technique. I plan my workouts out by the week and watch film and get advice from my resources that know how I feel but know more about the game than I do. Also I think I’ve finally got over that mental block that I couldn’t get over in high school to apply myself on the court just playing the game and not overthinking. However, I feel like I don’t spend as much time in the gym as I have before because of this and when I am in the gym I maximize my time and work on different parts of my game (before and after practice) but usually that’s it for my day while we’re in season. I feel like mentally if I go over that I can feel myself burning out and I’ve gotten to that point before and almost quit as a whole like 3 times. I want to play overseas so I know it won’t get easier but is there any advice you can give moving forward?

Here’s the real reason why most players suck. It’s because they’re trying to be a player they’re not. Like Westbrook tryna be Kyrie or Luka tryna be D rose. Most kids try to play like their favorite instead of who they move like and that’s why they suck or play generic

@ I say most players are, just look at the nba, high school and most training videos, you would think theirs a bunch of Kyrie’s but there’s not 😂 I think most players don’t have a clue who they move like so they just choose the most popular to study not knowing that Magic could get anywhere on the court just like Isiah Thomas even tho the styles were different. No one played the same in the 80s and 90s and that’s why it’s the best eras

I agree with a lot of you said, but I have an important observation about the concept of "hard work". I completely agree for example that if you want results, you have to make "sacrifices" like not going to a party. My point is that are some non-negotiables that are even more important, in particular sleep (science is pretty clear that the average person need at least 7-8 hours per night, and teenagers might need even more). And also I'd say a LITTLE bit of free time just to read something for example but that's more personal. But in general my idea is that you wanna do too much, you'll risk to burnout, so I think that, given that hard work is crucial, there's still a level where it's too much, especially if you surpass that level on a daily basis. One suggestion that I have is to plan your life as much as possible, in order to see the "big picture" of what you're doing and then see the areas where you can improve. Also crucial to eliminate futile distractions like social media or videogames - even 15 min per day are almost 2 hours per week! To be clear, I'm not sure that by doing this one might get better results at basketball or even the same level. Just sharing my perspective
@TuckerRichardson
@TuckerRichardson Ай бұрын
I definitely agree with what you are saying! And for example, I grew up not playing video games (my parents didn’t really let me). Did it suck sometimes? Sure, but I look back on it and am so happy I spent that time doing other things. I guess the point I was trying to make is that ideally you could have balance in your life, but that isn’t the most realistic thing for people who really achieve great things. You just have to be obsessed. Again though, I really agree with a lot of this so I appreciate the comment!
@Shingo_Aoi
@Shingo_Aoi Ай бұрын
@TuckerRichardson my mom didn't give videogames too and now I'm grateful for that 😀 I don't know if "balance" is the right word for what I meant though, I would call it "not always being on the edge of burning out"... By the way, I think that future athletes have to get through this process in a harder way, just because they have to do school as well and 5/6 hours minimum a day are already occupied. While if one wants a great academic career, for example, he must work hard but at least he can focus on that only goal.
@TuckerRichardson
@TuckerRichardson Ай бұрын
Yeah I agree, even a high school athlete today compared to when I was in high school has so many more distractions, so many more things in their life that could take them away from focusing on improvement. Also burn out is definitely real! I got somewhat close to this a few times but never really went through it like I know some athletes do. I think it was because I was working so hard on my own terms. A lot of times when a kid is being pushed by a parent or other outside source, that is when burnout can occur.

I'm one of those people who, after just 1 bad game, I could think about it and ruin my whole day. I could be performing well in 3 to 4 games, but after just 1 bad game, my mentality gets all messed up since I think I disappointed my teammates. Its been a real struggle for me to get my confidence back after 1 bad game.
@otocyon2431
@otocyon2431 10 күн бұрын
maybe try to look at it like this: nobody always wins. losing is an essential part of winning. every bad game is an opportunity for you to figure out what you can and need to do better in order to improve. losing or rather not wanting to lose again after a loss should be an invaluable motivation for you to go back to your training and workouts (and maybe change some things), so that next time you're better prepared and hopefully will have less bad games in the future. having a bad game should never bring you down. cause you'll always have bad games, even if you're playing at the highest level. everybody does. bad games will always be there. so use them as free motivation instead. the goal is simply to have the least amount of bad games possible. you'll only disappoint your team mates if you're wasting valuable time after a loss with doubts and grieving instead of analyzing what went wrong and working on getting better.

As a middle school basketball player who played on my B team last I have found your videos very informational. These videos help me implement these tips to my game because I know that I need much more improvement and these really help, thank you. I love this game and I sometimes am not able to go workout some days because my family gets busy and they can't take me. This makes me mad because I know what it takes to make it to college or even the pros and I can't work nearly as hard as I want to. Do you have any advice for this situation?
@TuckerRichardson
@TuckerRichardson Ай бұрын
I understand the frustration. Especially when you can drive yourself to workouts or practices you have to rely on others to do that for you. But you can still find ways to get better just at home if you can’t get to a gym. And also, trying to find friends or other players who could potentially give you rides, anything to make it to workouts. Keep grinding!

Eat a lot and get in the gym? haha no but in all honesty, skinny hoopers can get by. You just have to learn how to use your body and physicality even without more weight. But, you need to be lifting no matter what to gain strength.

Hey! I absolutely loved this video, im 15, and I really like basketball, but my economic situation doesnt give me either time or the money to go to a gym, I go to practices on mondays and wednesdays for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, I also play on the lunch brakes (30 min) and sometimes I go with friends and play for 2/3 hours, I know I should put more effort, specially in my physical work but I dont want to excite myself thinking if I can go pro or even live with basketball as my job, any reccomendations for routines, motivation or about my situation? Appreciate it ❤.

In my opinion, why not work as hard as you can and see where it can take you. Even if you don't get offers or don't go pro, you are still building up the skills for life at learning what it takes to really commit and work for something. I think that is valuable!

Basketball players literally have THE WORST work ethic😂. I used to think I was working hard by getting shots up before school, lifting and conditioning HARD 3 times a week, working out with my trainer all the time. It wasn’t until I started running track when I saw there really levels to this “hard work” stuff😂. For people who are decent at any race from 400m and up, you have to fight for your life at every workout. Imagine “hell week” for basketball, except it’s even worse and that’s what you do most days of the week. Basketball workouts are so physically easy and players would still rather play 2k at the crib 😂.

3:23 what if your transferable skill IS passing. I mean I know I’m not that good at shooting, but I always try to get open for a shot and sometimes I prove to the other team that I can shoot. I just have a thing for basketball IQ. I have great chemistry with drivers and shooters, that I always find them open or even make them open.
@TuckerRichardson

Hey if you are aggressive with your passing (that might not sound like it makes sense) that is still very valuable! Meaning you are able to beat your defender and create easy looks for others or you can make high level passes other kids can't. For sure coaches look for this!

Do you have any advice on what film we can use to send to college basketball coaches. Right now, I live outside the US and the only real tournaments we have is just a one local basketball tournament and another slightly bigger. Are these the types of footage fine or could we include some pick up. Adding on to the last part, what clips should we select in a highlight reel. Should it just be the skills which we succeed at or a little bit of everything.
@TuckerRichardson
@TuckerRichardson Ай бұрын
A lot of really good questions. Any footage you have of you playing could theoretically be used in a highlight video. The highlight video is just to get a coach interested, so include yourself making high level plays on offense and defense.

Ugh first of all I hate that they play zone 😂 but through cutting and even driving, splitting gaps, shooting 3s, getting offensive rebounds, etc. there are a lot of ways you can still be aggressive.

Really loved this video but i have a question. You see around a year ago. I had was in that mode just like Tyler. Wake up at 6 every day to shoot, then school, then gym, then chill and then i would workout again in the evening. Looking back at it, even though i missed parties, and time with friends, that was one of the happiest times i have ever had, because i was chasing my dream, and keeping the promises i made for myself.. But for some reason i stopped, and now doing a single workout feels hard. For some reason ,even though i love basketball i dont feel like i have the passion. But i think a reason has do with the fact that i have been overthinking alot about going to the next level, and what if i dont make it etc. Which kinda made me go from working out because i want to get better and because i love it, to working out because otherwise im going to overthink and etc. So honestly how do i get it back, because that geniune feeling of seeing improvment when you put in the time, after all the "sacrifices" i made (i always came home late so almost never ate dinner with my family) is such a good feeling. I just want to get back into that "mode"

How do you balance working hard/pushing yourself with not getting injured? And then coming back from injury how do I balance getting back into it without reinjuring myself?

I'm not a doctor and not an expert on this stuff. I think it depends on the types on injuries you have, and if you are doing the same movements every workout. But I honestly don't even want to try and give advice. Obviously there is a lot you can do with prehab or injury prevention.

Hey Tucker i work hard but i feel as if i dont work hard enough to reach my max potential. If allowed to i would get up as early as 5am just to get shooting or dribbling workouts in. My slight problem is when i shoot outside before school i always get scared that i am annoying my neighbours that are sleeping and my mum hates it when i play in early mornings as she wakes up super easily. So i stopped doing it I know this is a lame excuse but i feel as if this small factor may having me fall behind, compared to other player around the globe. I have recently started going to the gym, solely to gain strength for shooting and muscle in order to absorb contact. Im also not athletically gifted, onky 5 8 at 15 and have a really low vertical. My strength is that i am quick and can change directions well, with good handles. I know this is not enough and if i want to make college or to the professional level, this will not be enough. Sorry for the yap sess, thanks Tuck.

Thank you, and that is a great question! Well, I worked out with the Warriors this past summer and competed against guys in the NBA, EuroLeague and other top European leagues. I would say I'm really not that far off from that level. I truly believe I can get there one day. The biggest difference is the athleticism and the speed of the game. I definitely felt sped up when I was playing with those guys this summer because of the tempo and athleticism. Skill wise, I would need to become even more consistent and dangerous with my shot. IQ wise, I really think I am right there. I hope this helps!
