I just got my BX701 out after being locked away since the 90s. In amazing condition still, not a mark anywhere on it. Good job I didn't send it to the second hand shop, after seeing how much people are asking for them. It still plays as it did the day I bought it. (along with my Elvis and Shakin stevens tapes). Brings back the 80s to me. I also have the DCC and The CD Recorder and the Mini Disc player/recorder from the 90s. I was honestly going to get rid of them.

ATC stands for Automatic Tape Calibration. It's a function that sets the optimal recording level, bias and eq for the tape you use it on. Use it to calibrate the deck to the tape before recording for best results.

This was actually one of the last tape decks Technics ever made. The last one here in the USA was the RS-AZ7.

ATC is a Technics' own system and stands for "Auto Tape Calibration". It's to do with recording levels at different frequencies. Linear Image Field Class-Aa just basically means it's using a class-a audio output amplifier with "high-fidelity".

Had a dream this morning I was trying to fix a cassette deck with my crazy old landlord who insisted on wrapping an oversized belt 2 or 3 times to make it fit. I kept saying absolutely not but it actually sounded ok.

Aaah very nice deck! Also loved the tracker program, trouble is I heard it before bed and it gave me inspiration 🤣 so I had to open Cubase before I even had time for breakfast!

I never got on with any DAW when it came to making music, I tried a few including FL Studio and LMMS, but with my mind being so tracker influenced, DAWs were just too different.

Hi Clem, Try changing the motor speed 2 x faster for high fidelity recoding and playback. I promise it to be a big wow! half the hiss, around 90db dynamic range and good for 20k and above and half the wow and flutter too :)

I might try that. I'm sure that in the past as a kid I did that to one of my old tape decks but that was mainly just to make stupid noises.

Nice treasure. Enjoy.

Clem, you need to hang on to that tape deck! You just cannot buy quality cassette decks new these days. Thanks for sharing, it is indeed rare for these things to work without needing new belts at the very least.

I also have a really nice SONY turntable (you may have seen it in a couple of my videos) with motorized drawer, direct drive, linear tracking. I cant use it right now because of one little stretched belt that moves the tonearm, plus it needs a new needle.
