I've always remembered one dubious game on a British quiz channel asking 'Things you'd find in a lady's handbag' and when they revealed the missing answers, one of them was 'An anvil'.

I remember Ftn being ridiculous when it came to scheduling. For the first few years they introduced quiz TV, it was on a primetime slot of 10pm-1am. Let's not forget that aswell, for some BIZZARE reason, their 6pm-8pm slot was filled with Thomas Cook commercial presentations. The same presentations which would be broadcast from 5am. This would leave Ftn with only *6/7 hours* worth of its own programming airtime. Knowing them, that would probably include the 3 millionth repeat of Most Haunted, and a cheap Grub Smith documentary. Not exactly The Paint Drying Network worthy, but I'd rather they simulcast with that instead of their never-ending deals with various quiz TV channels around the world .

Wow Liz Fuller on Quizcall, that red dress is incredibly eye-catching, I almost missed everything you said in that bit! She lives in LA now and occasionally comes back to Swansea in Wales, where she grew up.

My grandad got into so much debt from these shows. He had just got a mobile phone and he kept phoning. Can't remember exact amount but the phone bill was around a couple of thousand.... Great content by the way but this video brought back alot of bad memories

I mention it in the previous episode, but unfortunately I couldn't find much footage so I couldn't find any of him

@@jonkasonic looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos, it's a shame it's so lost. I tuned in to the advert channel quite a few times, from my vague recollection Andy would be on quite late, maybe 9pm with a co presenter on a couch, discussing the current adverts.

Be fair. There were some bloody good presenters on there. Some who deserved to go on to primetime exposure. In my opinion.

I watched this old documentary about the launch of Ideal World and it showed some auditions that Paul Lavers was conducting to test out some of the potential talent. I think it's a good backstage insight into the style of presenting that is involved in live television and how you need to be on your toes, but it does take a certain kind of person to be able to be able to not only sustain a live programme but also for multiple things to go wrong and not be phased, along with being themselves. It's like giving someone some cups and saying "do something with these and make it good" and not everyone can do that in an entertaining way.

I remember spoiling one of the quiz channels late one night. The answer to the question was very obviously David Bowie so I gave it a try, left my answer and heard nothing. Tried it again and didn't hear back. Then I phoned a third time but left the answer Paul McCartney and I was phoned back after a minute or so. I was put on air and gave my answer...... David Bowie! I didn't really hear what happened on air next but someone came on the phoneline and told me off for not giving the answer I gave when I called. When I looked at the telly the question had been dropped and they were doing another one

I personally know someone who presented on one of these shows in Ireland around 2010 or so, it came from a studio in Budapest. She got a lot of abuse for it online but at that time, a job was a job. I agree about the radio quizzes too, one of the station in Dublin had a "guess the sound" thing a few years ago that went on for over a year and got up to €8,500. The answer turned out to be "an apple rolling into a pint glass".

2CR from Bournemouth ran The Secret Sound ( probably the only interesting point about the entire station ) which would feature a sound so vague it wasn’t at all obvious & i never heard it guessed correctly. Now it all makes sense . in the mid 1990s we worked in Stalbridge in a kitchen for days & i was horrified to find the customers chose to listen all day every day faithfully to 2CR rather than Orchard Sound Yeovil or whatever. the woman squawked at her hen pecked husband mercilessly but day three they left us & went shopping so i re tuned the radio & on returning the lady got quite irate ,called me a “ cheeky monkey “ in a voice identical to that of a Parrot speaking the phrase . for years after my boss called me “ cheeky monkey “ in a Monty python esq / Parrot voice like the radio owner….😁👍

Yeah it's weird to think how people used to be really loyal to their local station. We had GWR FM on at work over the speakers and I was trying to get them to change it to Radio 1. They ended up putting it on Radio 2, which other than Steve Wright, was sounding pretty stale back then.

The chap who appears at 6.27 - For 25 points: He’s now more famous as a rather successful comedy character. But WHICH ONE?

Ha I didn't know but I do now because I looked it up... and I didn't realise it was him, so I could claim the 25 point but I would live with the guilt for the rest of my life :)

It's interesting to see someone outside of Germany talk about 9Live, it's a proper national embarrassment in its day, but Max Schradin's antics on screen are legendary I'm glad these formats are gone for good
