The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

More proof Ed Sullivan should be in the Rock Hall of Fame. He used his show as a platform to showcase the most popular artists of the day who made his show relevant to the end. And as you can see in this post he genuinely liked most of the artists that appeared on the show. BTW the video quality for something 52 years old is incredible.

@@JJDPROMEDIAPRODUCTION True, but the Temps most memorable songs are 80% in the David Ruffin era IMO. Literally their 3 most iconic songs are probably: My girl, just my imagination, and Ain’t too proud to beg . Matter of fact I would Argue those are probably three of the best songs ever made period. To me this is what made them legendary. But with that said I did love what they did with Edwards too. They switched their style up to more of a psychedelic soul sound and this was hot at that time, maybe they contributed to the sales. But Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone was my jam!

It was an outdoor concert and just as they came on stage, the sky opened up. And not a little; a torrential downpour. The audience that stayed was getting pummeled, but the show went on. As bad as we were getting it, Otis, Melvin, Richard, Dennis and Ron got it worse. But they did the show, non-stop, and ended with "Can't get Next to You". Great performers, huge talents, and total Pro's.

A massive trove of digitally restored clips from “The Ed Sullivan Show” will arrive online during the next three years, reviving more than 10,000 long-buried performances and guest appearances from the iconic variety show. The global streaming project launches today with seven clips on KZbin and other platforms - a Motown-dominated batch of videos that includes performances by Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5 and Temptations and Gladys Knight & the Pips. They’re the tip of a cultural iceberg contained in the “Ed Sullivan Show” archives: The Sunday night program ran from 1948 through 1971 on CBS, piping the rock ‘ n’ roll revolution, Hollywood glitz and Detroit’s Motown sparkle into American living rooms alongside Broadway, opera, vaudeville, comedy and novelty acts.

@@deenell9039 Technically David chose to leave the Temptations and asked Dennis Edwards to fill in the Spotlight on Stage for him. Unfortunately same year as Edwards joined the Group David jumped up on Stage when Dennis was getting ready to sing my girl and took the mic out his hand then he jumped off Stage into the crowds he did for a number of Temptations shows until he begged Otis Williams to give him another chance after thinking it over he gave Ruffin one last shot. He was to Arrive in Gaithersburg Maryland for his come back show unfortunately Ruffin didn't show until the crowds lefted. Then Otis decided to keep Dennis and let David go.

I almost wish in some ways we could turn back the hands of time! God I wish our music would go back to this! Good, beautiful singing and dancing with class and style. Rap has infested and corroded almost all the beauty out of mainstream R&B. So much of our music is vulgar, unoriginal and ugly sounding crap.
