Steel pulse - prodigal son & handsworth revolution is simply par excellence as a musical journey from in opening musical introduction through to the songwriting & messages I think only third world 96 degrees album is equally brilliant musically Its a era where reggae music made in analogue showed you just can't beat authentic talented players of instruments expressing themselves musically. Digital replaced analogue and sadly it was computer riddims by the likes of king jammy steely & clevie ,Dave kelly put paid to the need for great musicianship.

The top 10 list is a master class. As a ivoiran i discover reggae thru Alpha Blondy. My father had the vinyl of JAH GLORY. A Blondy was the first reggae album i listen from side A to sibe B. After i it was Marley. Lucky Dube blow my mind too. Younger i think its was the reborn of Peter tosh. With SOJA i jump in reggae from USA. Groundation, Tribal seeds, JBB , 10 Ft. Ganja Plant etc etc . From the reggae sound of A. Blondy to SOJA my love for Reggae is now a addiction. I have got the reggae mylitis and is incurable

Thank you so much R.A.S. As always, honorable offering that I appreci-love to the fullest. Rightly so Midnite/Akae Beka as #1. One other detail was the family born land of Antigua. Antigua and St. Croix have a very strong and special genealogical relationship. Antigua of course means ancient and the airport code is that of the original people from central east Africa the ANU. Also Midnite’s song called “High Places of ANU” pays respect to the world renowned sacred site “Mount ANU” aka Greencastle Hill - “ the Stonehenge of The Caribbean”

I’m still sad that Lucky was killed. I was in a worldbeat band that had performed two of his songs (Slave, and Remember Me) around the time he was shot, and it was one of the saddest days I can recall. For sure we performed those songs, it just sucked we had to perform them for different reasons. RIP Lucky Dube, Vaughn Benjamin, Astro, and Brian Travers. I’m sure I’ve missed some. Keith was 1960's to like early 1970's. I recall him being being some type of a folk singer doing the north coast hotel circuit. Biggest hit was his adaptation of Yellow Bird. Good request, Mogen. RAS, maybe you could tie it up with other performers of this mode, although I cannot think of many Yardie ones. There's the Merrymen of Barbados and the Tradewinds of Guyana. People like the Frats Quintet and Olive Lewin of Ja were straight-up full folk singers and may not fit with Keith Stewart. But it's on you, oh! LOL. --Æ.

Theres some artists there I did not hnow, it gos to show how much great reggae we dont hear or sometimes do not get to play and I got into it in the beginning of the 70 ts and still finding out theres more and that's not what I have miss. UK artists and bands have been instrumental in creating new genres in the nineties. Your top ten is correct but there is so much more and so many who have been influential to the birth of other genres. General Levy, Top Cat, Sweetie Irie , Tenor Fly, Troublesome, Glamma Kid. Real underground street level artists who were exceptionally talented. One of the artists in your top ten bought dubplates from one of the artists I've mentioned before the artist you mentioned buss big. The artists I've mentioned were inspirational to the genres of Jungle, UK Garage, Grime, and the artists who came through those genres always states these artists as the artists who influenced them to do music more so than the ones you mentioned. These artists need to be given there flowers too or Reggae won't be given it's flowers as the inspiration for those genres. Just look at Hip Hop. Try telling the Yanks that it comes from Jamaican sound system culture and they come out with all kinds of rubbish to deny it.

This is gonna be controversial but l was expecting UK band The Police to make the top ten. While not all their music output has been reggae and they're usually listed as a post punk or new wave band a lot of their music especially their first 4 albums, and some of their hits like Message ln a Bottle, Roxanne, Walking On The Moon, One World, The Bed's Too Big Without You, Spirits ln A Material World etc were reggae. Just the humble opinion of a guy from Trinidad who enjoyed the ska and reggae coming out of merry old England in the 80's like Aswad, Third World, Steel Pulse, Maxi, The Police, UB40, Musical Youth, The Beat, Latin Quarter, Madness, FYC, Specials, Tippa lrie, Selectors etc. Still some of the best music l ever heard.

In my opinion, I think Majek Fashek looks underrated but deserves to be in the list. After the demise of Bob Marley in 1981, the emergence of Majek Fashek a couple of years back with great songs like Send down the rain, So long, too long, redemption song (cover), Religion is politics was like a revival of Bob Marley's voice but with a different beat which he carved out to be 'pangolo beat' long ago.🤔

Well, family, y'all may be upset w/me but I refuse to give some of these groups props based on money, fame or awards- especially the nonBlack/Africana ones. Many awards are given by U.S./UK White owned corporations that frequently miss the mark on genres we created, favoring their own. SOJA's win was lamented by many Jamaicans & Black non J.A. peeps like me across the world because it necessarily overlooked/excluded those whose work actually deserved it. We're not in a meritocracy. I fully think Br. RAS strives to be fair and present us with well-researched work grounded in research. This is my own personal politics. Many of our greats don't get their props because those evaluating their work aren't qualified. Furthermore, as with Hip-Hop, many consumers are outside the "insider" demographic and their buying power talks. So even as I've had UB40 as a guilty pleasure, I'm aware they like other White groups had their success propelled by the rewards given by their own. E.g. Also it's all well and good to be welcomed into a space as a contributor, it's another to not have substantial work towards one's group to eliminate or minimizing hurt against those victimized by said group. It's how we end up with people giving Chris Blackwell/Whiteworst being given too much credit for groups he knew he was gonna make big money from, whose talent he didnt have and whose ability to create a label came from his family's benefitting by default (at the very least) from enslavement and colonization. I can recognize skill across and within race but will still say though I enjoy "Piove" by Giovannoti, his reggae shouldn't be heralded unless he's actively advocating for the dismantling of antiBlack racism in Italy. 🤷🏿‍♀️❤💛💚🖤

Half of these artists are unknown to me ..theres no question that Assad Maxi priest and UB40 steel pulse are the most popular..most were 2nd generation British Jamaicans. Arrived in England from the 1940s .maxi priest was Jacob millers family just to add ..all the others I cant comment on but in the reggae of the 80s and 90s they were regularly played UB40 were more pop based and were rarely played by deejays ..il have to listen to these other guys ..good vid
