That was really cool. I loved how they put a mirror inside so you can see the opposite side. I ha r never seen a mausoleum decorated like that. It had to have been his wife's doing.

She died after he did, so yes it was her doing. She was Catholic but he was not. Sr Richard might have converted to Islam during his travels through Arabia.

It’s really cool that the glass isn’t alll weathered and opaque. All other windowed tombs seem to have leaked and grown ferns usually, or are just so dirty that you can’t see anything inside

I knew instantly that it was Sir Richard and Isabel Burton, a power couple of the era! Not only did he find the source of the Nile (disputed by his rival Speke), but also explored up the Amazon (with Isabel). Translated the Arabian Nights, and wrote amazing works of his own. I never knew you could see inside the tomb! Thanks for sharing that with us!

That's an odd one for sure. If you ever get the chance, visit Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond VA. Lots of off tombs and grave markers. Even a few presidents are buried there, along with Jefferson Davis.
