Kyle Reese is one of my favorite movie protagonists. Dude is such a loyal and brave soldier to take on a suicide mission to protect Sarah Connor. Like so many others around my age, I saw T2 first. It wasn’t until I was a bit older that I truly started appreciating The Terminator. I always liked it but T2 appealed to me more. Now, I consider the original to be the better of the two. The horror elements and its darker tone are awesome. Overall, it’s one of the greatest 1-2 punches in cinema history. Thankfully the series ended at 2 and we weren’t bombarded with garbage sequels with horrible acting and convoluted plots.

Yes, T2 has better effects no doubt, but the horror element is not there in T2, this movie never slows down and Arnold is much scarier as a villain. There was talk of a Doom movie in the '90s that supposedly would have starred Arnie. I remember thinking Michael Biehn or Tom Berenger could embody the character more betterly. They both look like Doomguy (especially Tom Berenger). As for badass women, Ripley is the brain, Vasquez is the brawn. And Hicks digs strength, intelligence, and REAL equality. Equality of opportunity, that is, not necessarily rank. You know, since experience matters most. His reluctance as a leader after Apone's capture makes his character even more relatable. When he says, "Yeah, that's right," after Ripley points out that he's technically in charge, you can tell he's taking up Apone's mantle because he has to, not because he wants to. Michael Biehn and Bruce Willis could both humanize their characters in ways that most actors just don't. Mike could even humanize his villain characters!

I think the best part of this movie is how scary and ruthless the terminator is. And they accomplish that by never letting it near the heros until the very end with catastrophic consequences. The narrative is that if he touches you, you die, the same goes for T2. I've seen in many movies today where a supposedly unbeatable villain gets to his victim and then grabs him and then throws him to the side. WTF? This happens in terminator salvation, but it's common in many others, they want to have a longer action scene, but it diminishes the menacing factor.

One of my favorite movies of all time, even though it’s dated it still holds up with the story, the characters and the action. Schwarzenegger is so menacing as the Terminator, he’s super scary compared to the other movies. It gives you a glimpse into the future we never had because of the Cold War (coming from someone that grew up in the 80’s) and these machines hunting down all of the humans. Then you have the infiltrates like Arnold whose job is to kill you and never stop until he does. I’m glad it got such a high rating from you as it deserves it, it’s still a good movie even after all of these years.

A few things though, The Terminator was made by Skynet, a US company, it can replicate voices and accents, it goes back in time to the US, and it sounds Germanic? That’s an interesting choice by Skynet. Of course we suspend our disbelief because it’s Arnold but, it’s still there. Also, it could’ve killed Sarah when it jumps onto the car after Reese saves her at the bar, he just broke the windshield with his arm and then it stopped, but considering how much it weighs and how strong it is, it could’ve gone in head first, and when the police are after them and it crashes, where did it go and why? He couldn’t have concluded it was outmatched nor would it care, because he then went to the police station and took them all out, so why not just shoot them all there?
@nps1016
@nps1016 Жыл бұрын
@@andreshernandez1180 I’ll try to answer your questions as best I can. In the Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines deleted scenes, there’s a board meeting and one of the people on it is this big guy names Col. John Candy, played by Arnold. But he has a Southern accent and there’s this Austrian official on the board so Skynet chooses the voice of the official to go with the Colonel. There are plenty of infiltrator T-800’s but model 101 is the only one seen. During the escape from Tech Noir, Kyle fired at the gas tank of a car that blew up in the Terminator’s face, stunning him a bit and disrupting his sensors, he’s still jumps on the hood of the car by listening and judging the distance of the car and is only knocked of when Kyle hits the other police car. But the Terminator gets up real fast, knocks out the cop and drives after him. During the chase in the tunnel, the Terminator is hit in the face and the arm, injuring him and then the car slams into a concrete wall going full speed. It would kill a normal person but not the Terminator. Due to being injured, almost out of ammo and bunch of police cars coming his way, he slips away. The Terminator is an infiltration unit and if people know what he looks like, he’ll be easier to locate and stop. He’s big and powerful but he’s not indestructible. Going back to his hotel room, he’s able to repair himself, change his clothes and finds out where Sarah and Kyle are at either getting a portable police scanner from the police car or somewhere else. Kyle can get away from him so fast because he’s destroyed quite a few Terminators in the future. Eventhough he doesn’t have any future weapons he can still fight him and almost destroys him with the pipe bomb in the factory although it cost him his life. Hope this helps.

@@nps1016 that deleted scene sure sounds like someone asked why the accent and they decided to justify it, which is still a lame excuse for using that voice considering where it’s going and what it can do, but at least they addressed it. The rest, although plausible it just seems convenient, he was stunned? It could see well enough, he knew where and how far the windshield and once broken going in wouldn’t have been much of a stretch so my point is still valid, also, “injured” or not, he could’ve shot a few cops and taken their ammo to shoot the rest, it was on a suicide mission anyway and if It shot them all right there there was no need to hide anymore, the mission would be complete. Thanks for the taking the time to explain though.

When T2 was coming out I got so excited I got tickets by myself, got on my BMX into town, was worried they would ask my age at the cinema. I was like gonna chance this. Love the first 2 movies.

I miss movies like this. There's so much tension, so much action and it's just not afraid to be a simple story. It doesn't waste time over explaining things, shit just happens. It's incredible that this only cost a few million dollars to make and it still looks great today apart from like 2 effects. The entire film feels so real and that makes it feel like an actual horror movie, God damn I miss Terminator having this kind of vibe. I love T2 as well but the first movie is just something special. Nowadays it's all just CGI riddled messes with massive over the top set pieces that are typically fun in the moment but ultimately forgettable. I doubt anyone who has watched this movie will EVER forget that scene in the club when the Terminator is scanning around for Sarah and *just* misses her. If they ever reboot the franchise which I'm sure they will I hope they just kinda piss off with all the time travel stuff, it should only be there to explain the Terminators being there and that's it. All I want is to actually see Judgement Day happening and humanity eventually winning in a complete story arc, preventing it over and over is just dull.

For my reference pool, the Terminator was the example where stop motion effects actually work. My favourite movie is Ghostbusters, and yet - yep, that Terror Dog is stop motion anytime it's not sitting in place. The Terminator on the other hand - the janky, choppy movments make it scarier; it is to it's benefit. Love the quick and low-key dig at Genesis. Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese....yeah...that Captain Boomerang though.

I would consider the relationship between Terminator and T2 to be quite similar to the relationship between Alien and Aliens. Terminator and Alien were more sci-fi horror. T2 and Aliens were balls-to-the-wall, over-the-top 1990's action films. I always found it interesting that originally Arnold was going to play Kyle Reese before he was appropriately re-cast as the Terminator itself. And the rest is history.

T1 was always the superior Terminator film to me. As great as T2 is, I admire the overall picture of T1 where the timeline exists as a predestination paradox - an endless loop. SkyNet must always send back the T-800 to 1984 to essentially create itself by launching technology years ahead prematurely when the T-800's parts are found. The human resistance must always send Kyle Reese back because he is the key to why John Connor is humanity's leader - because the only way for Connor to have such crucial knowledge of the future that would aid the resistance in winning the war is because his mother got that knowledge from Kyle and passed it down to John. It's a great twist on the notion of "there is no fate but what we make for ourselves" (which isn't actually said in T1 - it was a deleted scene that became canon for T2). SkyNet tried to destroy the future of humanity winning and ended up creating their worst threat in the process.

The way he lumbers around and kills anything in his path like a slasher, the monotone delivery of his quotes fits the role also. This movie also has some of the greatest shootouts and chases in Hollywood history. I also love the practical effects, I'd take them over cgi any day. One my favorite movies.

T1 had every single genre packed into one movie, not just sci-fi and horror - romance, drama, comedy, thriller elements ... there is a certain charm about the look and feel of this movie that can't be matched, ever! I love T2 but eat your heart out! Also, stop hating on T3 and T4 people...they add their own elements to the overall story.
