Bheeshma, the most profoundly intricate, bold and radical character I have ever encountered! The Mahabharata, in its strangely prophetic capacity, has addressed everything that plagues our world even to this day: misogyny, harassment faced by women (denuding Draupadi), casteism (Eklavya, Karna), the ethics of warfare, reimagining the institution of marriage and obviously the list goes on. I feel slightly proud as an Indian that something as potentially subversive and beautiful as The Mahabharata laces our cultural tapestry.

umm.. when was the last time you read the og Mahabharat in Sanskrit??? Unless you base your knowledge of Mahabharat on some tv serials and word of mouth, you shouldn't be writing what you wrote. 1. Draupadi was married to just Yudhishthir. She never married 5 men. 2. Karna and Eklavya never faced caste-ism. "caste" originates from "casta"- a european word...google it. there was no concept of Caste in Mahabharat. If you actually read Mahabharat you will know the reason why Drona asked for Eklavya's thumb and why Parashuram cursed Karna. But you won't. You would rather believe a leftist/communist propaganda. 3. Misogyny?? hmm.. .really?? a few men (Duryodhana, Dushashan and Karna) humiliated a woman and you blame that on misogyny??? if misogyny was so prevalent in the society, I don't think Pandavas would have waged a war for a woman's honor. Back then women were regarded so highly, that just because a few men insulted a woman, Mahabharat happened. Good that you are "slightly" proud as an Indian. But know your own history first and then you will take even more pride for valid reasons.

@@roigy2071 no. varna is not the same as caste. caste is an european concept. varna is a vedic concept. when english and germans started translating sanskrit texts, they wrongly used 'caste' to explain 'varna'. the whole west and even in modern india, people are taught that varna and caste are same. varna system divides people based on their ability and "karma". it has nothing to do with birth. while caste system is all about dividing people based on their birth. Drona and kripacharya were of Brahmin varna, but they also fought in Mahabharat as kshatriyas. Bheesma was a Kshatriya by varna, but he was the teacher of Pandu and Dhritrashtra. Eklavya was a shudra by varna, but he later served as army official for Jarasandh. These and many more examples in Vedic texts prove that varna system was pretty flexible. just like in our modern times. A son of a doctor is more likely to become a doctor. But he may eventually end being a musician or a politician. He may be all of these together. That's varna for you.

Weapons and warfare system used at that time was more advanced and sophisticated then today we have.....it was a kind of univerasal war because....civilization from another world also joined that war...to whom we call aliens....after that everything was vanished...because it was over turn of age and beginning of kalyuga....that is why we have very less proof of existence of Mahabharata...and it is very interesting to know that is many people called it a myth....due to lack of knowledge....Thanks to all

Where is Shikhandi. The Princess Amba who wanted to marry Bheeshma reincarnated as Shikhandini. Shikhandini got a sex change and became Shikhandi. Bheeshma knew her as a women (Princess Amba) so he refused to raise his weapons towards her. So Krishna Placed Arjun and Shikhandi on the same chariot. Since Bheeshma would not raise weapons towards any of them Arjun would keep shooting at him. Untill he gets enough arrows in him to finally sleep on the bed of arrows (Sharshaiyya). No Dramatisation required. The original story is grand enough.

forgottenmemories63 Pointing to a flaw is not ruining it. Remember almost all the modern adaptation of the Mahabharat or such epics fail because the focus shifts from the story to special effects or artistic representation. Designing a special effect or portraying the story in a scale mahabharat deserves is a big task. But Storytelling is more dependent on the story.All I ask is, Just be true to the story.

shikhandi came on the battleground on the tenth day of the battle, and this is just the first day, and i agree this story is epic and for the first time it is picturised the way it deserves, and to tell that your facts are right would be wrong, because there are various versions of the same stories, read wikipedia, it might help.

and shikhandi was born a man and not a woman as you are implying, but he had a curse that when he'll reach a certain age, he'll go through a sex change, on the first night of his marriage, he turned into woman and the girl, who was a princess went back to her father who himself was a king and shikhandi went to forest, where he came acroos a sadhu who when heard shikhandi's stry agreed to give him his manhood for one day, wth that sadhu's manhood he went back to his kingdom, and when shikhandi went back to give that sadhu his manhood back, it was too late as sadhu's guru came to know about what sadhu did and cused him that he'll have to live without his manhood, so shikhandi was a man through out his life except for one night, when he was named shikhandini, and shikhandi was hence treated as a bisexual, therfore he was amn and a woman both, and just becuase he was half woman, bhishma pitama refused to raise weapons.

Ashish Jabbal So the whole Gandharwas and the pond and the can convert into a man boon is what HAWA HAWAII. I have read the authentic sources not just wikipedia. He was not born a man, the princess wanted a boon to kill Bheeshma from Parshuram. So Parshuram (who was a ansha avatar) granted that she will be reborn perfectly timed so that Bheeshma would have lived a long life and will be willing to die. But on being born Amba as Shikhandini questioned the will of God and wanted to die. In short a Gandharwa gave her the power to transform into a man. But Gandharwa powers transformed according to the lunar cycle so once a fortnight he would transform into a women. Think like a werewolf but from man to woman.

Goldi Sahu as i told you earlier, there are many versions, so saying which one is authentic would be wrong, as the script is very old and from time to time, it got manipulate in many ways. and this series like all other have chose to depict one of many versions. But atleast this one has given a new face to mahabharat, the epicness it deservs as no indian maker couldnt. from small details to the way of telling the story, the first episode of showing Time telling the story to pandavas, and the memory of each and every character from there point of view during the war. this series is what mahabharat deserves if we chose not to be stagnant on ourt views
