This was one of the craziest chases that I have ever been involved with. We chased a stolen ambulance which ended up crashing onto a live level crossing with the train seconds away... Many of you will have seen this on Police Interceptors, but I thought I would go into slightly more detail on what actually happened, and our mindset that you didn't get to see on TV.

Just looked up this case. The man driving the ambulance caused a fatal accident. He drove for 37 miles at speeds up to 92mph endangering the public. Only by a stroke of luck did he not cause a 100 mph train derailment. He was a banned driver with seven previous convictions. In November 2018 he was sentenced to 22 months jail of which he will have served 11. How utterly ridiculous the UK justice system is

Interesting (nerdy) fact - this type of level crossing is interlocked with the signals on the railway so unless the barriers are detected in the down position then the signaller can't clear the signal to a proceed aspect. When a vehicle crashes through the barrier like this, the crossing loses detection and reverts all signals protecting the crossing back to danger and the CCTV monitor in the signal box (in this case at York) comes on to show the signaller that there's something potentially fouling the line. The signaller can then put out an emergency REC call to drivers in the area to stop immediately through the GSMR radio system in a train cab. In this instance the train had already passed the signal protecting the crossing and the linespeed here is 95mph so there was very little that could be done to stop this train in time, but thankfully it missed it. I also remember at almost exactly the same time, a van went through Cononley level crossing too! In fact, I think I still have the train crew updates on this incident from Northern control! 😁

Ben! I've had an idea! Have you ever considered a teaching position at a police training centre? You have loads of experience and qualifications, you're very good at explaining things with invaluable insight and logic. I also think you have the right personality and approach to instruct new recruits and would be absolutely perfect for the role. The difference you could make for these new Bobby's would be priceless and in due course would save lives.

I always wonder, with the members of the public that get stuck in to help the police… what’s the official opinion on that? I think I’d definitely hesitate because of any potential repercussions, the fact that the police have the equipment and training to handle those situations. I wouldn’t want to be baton’d in the stomach or spiced if the officers I’d try to help would think I’m trying to get stuck into a fight, depending on the situation of course.

Well done lads. They don’t make medals big enough for this type of work. My big brother was in the Lancashire Constabulary, got his years in retired and 6 months later he was diagnosed with Lewey Body Dementia, that’s dementia with Parkinson’s type disease. A nicer lad hasn’t been invented yet, before he went into the police force he trained as a psychiatric nurse ( the family is full of them) so he nursed people who had what he ended up with. Sod’s law. To quote my brother “ if there weren’t bad buggers out there you wouldn’t need police”.

I remember that episode and also wondering why someone didn't simply move the ambulance out of the way. Now I understand the reasons. I followed up to see details of what happened originally and then subsequently. The law handcuffed the court to giving this driver only 22 months behind bars, plus a very lengthy ban. This wasn't this man's first tango with traffic offences - it was his 7th or 8th. His traumatic upbringing was cited in mitigation of his actions. Frankly, mine was traumatic too, but I'd never dream of conducting myself like he has done thru life. People have choices. Actions have consequences. The minute you knowingly put lives at risk, it's all on you.

The train driver would have made an emergency call on a radio which is in every cab. It sends out a message "EMERGENCY EMERGENCY EMERGENCY" and goes out to all trains in the area via the radio and driver are trained to stop the train and not move until it's confirmed as safe to do so. I've heard 2 in my 3 years as a guard and it makes your heart stop, because it's most commonly used when someone gets hit. Just lucky the train was on the other line and was able to make it past, could easily have been another Ufton Nervert or Great Heck. Ben im a train driver based at Leeds, this is Kildwick crossing. The line speed there for the train is 90mph and the type of train involved weighs 200t. The crossing also has CCTV which is monitored by the signaller who is based in York. They would have seen this and sent an emergency call out to the driver to stop his train immediately. The train here is an electric one and requires 25000 volts to operate. Can you imagine had the ambulance had hit the stanchion and brought the overhead wires down as well with live wires trailing the floor.

Rail tracks here in the UK are fenced off from public access, it's not generally possible, or at least not easy, for people to get onto the tracks, except perhaps at level crossings like this. I've seen tracks in the US with nothing to separate them from roads or paths, that's the insane bit to me.

I don't buy the answer to the question about what stopped you moving the ambulance. If that train had hit, there could have potentially been huge loss of life and I would imagine the preservation of multiple lives far outweighs the need to preserve a crime scene. You covered it briefly but the real reason was because the ambulance was on a live train track with a train approaching at over 100mph. You have no reason to be ashamed or have to try and excuse that decision. You made the right call. You could have been killed along with countless people on that train. You have demonstrated time and time again on your channel that you are already hero enough and I take my hat off to you and your colleagues. Not many people can say they have had to make instant life and death decisions for themselves and the public simultaneously!

Bit worry if that's the way the police would deal with a vehicle stuck on a railway rather than try and push it out the way if a train is coming, what's more worrying is I'm a Train driver.

If you ask me, police do not get enough respect. Yes theres a few bad ones, but most of them are good people who are willing to make incredible sacrifices to protect the public. The fact theres a train going through any town at 100 mph is mental, needs to be slowed right down going through level crossings.

Moving the ambulance 10ft away from the track I would have thought would be more important if it was endangering a train with a possible derailment, I dare say with the chase of the ambulance the majority of evidence that that came off probably was important, but if there was still evidence on the ambulance then moving it that 10ft I would say the evidence left on the ambulance will still be there, but I do understand you would have got a GBH of the ear hole if you did move it.. ( Damed if you do and Damed if you don't ), sometimes you cant please the bosses.

I think the fact he didn't move it at first is because they didn't know how far the train was, that segment (I believe ) is talking about whu they didn't move it after instead of closing down the rails

I was quite happy driving about until I got bored one day, got on KZbin and had myself a ‘Police Interceptor” fest. Now I’m having a problem sleeping. So...can anyone tell me how Mr Interceptor would know (say, at the side of the road on a Sunday afternoon) that DVLA have my driving licence ‘application”? I’m trundling about supposedly covered by section 88 (I think it is). I didn’t want to renew my LGV entitlement - that’s now way passed its expiration date, which for some unfathomable reason expires the entire licence, and it’s all disappeared into the abyss in Swansea. How do they know not to throw me out onto the hard shoulder with my shopping and the dog while they drag my car onto a low loader and off to the pound? Anyone?
