Welcome back! Your riffs are right on point! TCSM has always been a really mixed bag for me. First time I saw the original in 1995, I thought the acting was so bad I walked out during the scene when Leatherface was chasing the blonde girl up the stairs. And I was watching it on video at a friend's place. And I was stoned! My next exposure to the franchise was the one with Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger on HBO in Taiwan. A decade of sobriety later, I finally re-watched the original on late-night TV and found it a lot more enjoyable (Kinda funny how my affinity for horror movies has skyrocketed since I quit drinking and drugs--guess that's how I deal with reality now) Then I saw the remake and I didn't hate it (R. Lee Ermey can make anything watchable...just like Scarlett Johansson). But I have to say--and I don't know or care how many people disagree with me--the sequel/prequel to the remake featuring Leatherface's (aka Thomas Hewitt) backstory is my favorite. I guess what I'm trying to say is I enjoyed this video!

I don't know what the other three, but a top five horror film list that didn't have this and The Exorcist would just be wrong. I'm not even saying they are my favorite two, I'm saying they are the greatest combination of "important/influential" and "effective". A serious horror fan would feel foolish leaving them off the list. The other three are less certain for me. Anything else I can think of is debatable. Halloween, Psycho, Alien? The original Dracula? 🤷‍♂️

I don't think we were to feel anything passionate towards any of the characters. They're just simple meat to the slaughter. Much like we don't feel one way or another about the animals that we consume everyday. We are so out of touch with where our food comes from. The dinner scene was downright cruel. They were playing with their food. I feel the intent of the film was to put humans in place of beef. That way we might feel some outrage into where our food might have come from before it hit our plate.

Of all of the movies in this series, universe, whatever this is the least gory. A lot of the graphic moments take place off camera making the imagination run rampant. It's a slow burn and the only one I really liked. The original was only available on Super 8 meaning you had to have the necessary projector to show it. Fun Fact: This movie played a small part in the comedy Summer School where 2 students convince the teacher to show it in the classroom.
