First time I witnessed the Texas off ramp we were backed up for miles and suddenly at least 20 vehicles just crossed over the grass onto the frontage. Being from California I was shocked .. but once explained very pleased to see people with so much common sense and solidarity ❤

I got a kick out of this one. In my town they made some "improvements" to our loop. They decided to put up pilons so we couldn't use these little time savers. IT WAS HILARIOUS!!!! Within just a couple of hours someone had taken the pilons & lined them up to actual accentuate the opening. The police would put them across & someone else would come along & fix them the other direction (hope I'm making sense). It happened so many times, the police just left it alone. 🤣🤣🤣 Oh! And it's called "common sense". Ain't nobody got time to sit here & wait. 🤣🤣🤣

In DFW, we have these self-made exits on pretty much all highways, not just I-35 😂

I just took one yesterday on I-10 right before the traffic backed up. It's called a "TEXIT"

Don't forget about "crossovers"! Along the fast lane, once you hit country, you can find worn spots across the highway going from one direction to the other direction. Those are used when there's a Farm-to-Market road (FM) or a County Road (CR) that leads to someplace a lot of people want to get to on the other side, or if there's a really bad exit so a lot of people accidentally miss it and have to do a quick turn-around. Over time, Crossovers tend to become permanent and will get included in the highway maintenance and future plans - they get used by patrolcars for sitting, are great for turn-arounds, and help you reach hundreds of small roads that aren't worth building a huge exit for, but still need to be accessed. We're problem solvers, here. Impatient problem-solvers.

When my husband was in grad school in Denton, in the late 80's, I had to commute into Dallas for work. I-35 was always a mess, and I frequently used those DIY exit ramps when an accident or construction brought traffic to a stop. They made life a little better.

I only did this once, in Houston. Made my own off ramp after stuck forever in completely stopped traffic jam on 290 in blazing summer heat, my car was starting to over heat and getting low on gas. But the last straw that finally sent me over the edge, literally (off 290, across the grassy slope and down a curb onto the frontage road) was a Texas mosquito hungrily biting my ankles the whole time. My Corolla was never the same LOL.

Funny you mention getting stuck like that. I was blocked on IH-10 while riding my motorcycle after the rains the other day and took a Texas off ramp. Pretty muddy, but hard packed mud. My rear tire started sliding and I had a little though that I might have a problem, but I managed to move off the mud and get enough traction on the edge of the grass. The tire did throw a lot of mud up when I accelerated down the access road though.
