New look at an old lens, 400mm telephoto lens made by Spiratone. I describe the T mount system and how a preset lens operates We also look at histograms.

Excellent video. I learnt so much in a short time from someone who obviously knows what they are talking about. There are so many people out there who pretend to know. The only thing is, I think you meant 'over-exposed' when you said 'under-exposed' whilst viewing the histograms.

Thanks for the information on how use the lens by opening the aperture to focus then clicking it down to the desired preset stop to take the photo, it's really helped Mike on my 500mm version

Great review! I have on of these and really enjoyed your presentation. Technically, I think this is a "long lens," rather than a telephoto - the latter is a subset of the long lens which, as you pointed out with the Spiratone, has just that one lens in front, while telephotos shrink down the length of a long lens via a set of lenses.

I think the reason these lenses are so cheap is that there are only TWO lens elements in that thing! I recently got a clone of it and took it apart fro fun, and I only found two lens elements inside of it.

Mike Kennedy would you happen to know how to take these apart for cleaning? I just picked one up that's really dirty but looks cleanable
@m005kennedy
@m005kennedy 6 жыл бұрын
No, but I need to find out. This season I noticed fungus grew on the main element so it needs to come apart to see if I can clean. There are some Facebook grows on antique or vintage camera repair. I hope to find out how. Some special tools such as a spanned wrench may be needed. I don’t think I would take something apart that needs to be re-aligned optical as I that would require some real technique to get back together again.

I have had a SPIRATONE 2.8 135 lens since1959, and going to use it with a NIKON D5100, results can be viewed without having to wait, the lens is in good order and has not been used since 1959 with a PENTAX H2 camera

I was surprised at the results from this lens! Would love to come up with some of the other t mount lenses. I always want their super wide angle. One of their CAT mirror lenses would be great to try also. The fact that some of these lenses lack contrast can easily be fixed with digital software.

I have the lens in 500mm and shoot manual with my DSLR with no problems. Pictures are decent/acceptable. Of course I would expect a 3500 dollar lens to be better, but Mr. wallet says no. I've had this for many years.

what you and I need is called a T adapter. It would be ok if it only fit the camera that took the E series Nikon lenses. It will have to be run today manually. no autofocus, no expose measurement. they should be easy to find on eBay.

I missed this comment. You need to buy a T adapter that mates with your Nikon DSLR
