I was told a good story about the Matterhorn's brake system from Ed Feuer, the Imagineer that was in charge of the 1977 bobsled update when the ride went from 1 car to the 2-car trains. The existing brake system couldn't stop the cars with the added weight when the bottoms were wet. He was tasked with finding a way to make the brakes work. He thought about how lots of cars would not stop when intersections would flood, but his Mercedes always did. He did some research and learned that Mercedes' brakes have little round pucks on their surface instead of being flat like other breaks. So if you ever notice all the brakes throughout the ride have these pucks, you now know why and you can thank Ed.

I whacked the crap out of my elbow on that ride when I went around Christmas this year- it was sore and hurt to move for a couple of days. It also gave me the back/neck jostling that everyone else gets and I did notice people did more “oof”-ing than screaming. There’s also a couple of sharp turns that I just fully anticipated the metal snapping and the toboggan going flying over the park

Thank you for making this video :) The Matterhorn will always have a special place in my heart. Being on this ride with my dad is one of my earliest memories ever. I remember riding in my dad's lap and it being night and I was so scared but I loved the feeling of it. I covered my ears and my dad held me in his lap because I was scared of the Yetis. I will never forget how loud they were back in the 2000s. You used to queue on the side of the mountain and just hearing the loud growl every couple of minutes was truly an unforgettable experience. I remember my dad telling me when all of the Yetis were gone so I could look out at the ride. It has changed so much over the years and it doesn't have the same vibe as it did when I was younger. But still, to this day it is one of my favorite rides. Just my dad can't get on it anymore cause he says it hurts his back lol. One time when I was little I looked out and just saw the glowing red eyes and hearing the gnarly growl and the whispy snow air as we ascended the hill in the beginning. The only thing I wish they kept was the LOUD growl that you can hear when you are in line or just walking around it, it was so intimidating. Seeing all of the different versions of the ride really brought me back to that time. thank you again for the nostalgia :')

The thing that makes it more scary is the fact that it’s a full animatronic figure that has been programmed to move more quickly and naturally giving it a more realistic and plausible range of movement, the 1970s ones were ok but very limited and static so they most likely just used the appearance of ‘Harold the yeti’ as a basis but replaced almost everything else with new animatronic tech

This is the only rollercoaster I don’t even hesitate to re-ride after knowing exactly how rough and terrifying from a structural standpoint it is. I’ve gotten bruised elbows and ribs as well as back pain, and any scream I make on that ride is when the bobsled hits one of those sharp turns where you overlook the mountain and I feel like the tracks are gonna give and we’re gonna go sailing over the park. I also had a day where 3/4 of my rides ended with me or the bobsled adjacent to mine getting pulled aside on that cool pull out track they use to fix stuff. This thing CLEARLY needs some love. But I just can’t help but get on.

Oh and Tinkerbell would fly from the peak of the Matterhorn to the top of the Disney Castle each evening. This was a Disney cast member dressed as Tinkerbell, held in a harness, and carried along a cable spanning the two structures. She would glow from a spotlight that would track her. In the day, this nightly event would be anticipated by park guests causing them to take pause and in hushing voices, direct their children's gaze to the skyward spectacle - furthering the idea that 'life is but a dream'.

It's a legendary landmark. The first tubular steel coaster that brought the legendary innovators at Arrow into the coaster industry, and we know what Arrow has done. The first inverting steel coaster, the first full-circuit hypercoaster, the first 4-d coaster, and many old favorites such as the suspended coaster, classic looper, and other classics. Truly deserving of its status as a coaster landmark. That being said, they should probably reach out to a company (probably S&S) to get a retrack. While I haven't been on it myself, I always hear about how rough it is, so Disney may want to get on fixing it.
@keyman66894 жыл бұрын
It's one of a kind in theming, but shares a very similar ride experience as Space Mountain in WDW. When bringing Space Mountain to Disneyland, they used the theming but reworked the ride experience since they already had the Matterhorn.
@SeanGodos4 жыл бұрын
I wish they could tear up the track and remodel it to be as smooth as Big Thunder Railroad. Lots of the curves are not banked at all and cause the sled to knock hard into most curves. Besides that, the banks, drops and curves were only designed to have a single sled, so linking 2 sleds would cause that much more frantic pushing and pulling at each other at every bend of the track. The first sled will hit the brake pad first causing the second sled to get bumped back, it's jarring after feeling it 30 times in a row. Also, the sleds were not repainted, they are completely new and much lighter, like they were made from the milk jug plastics just like the new boats from "it's a small world". It's amazing and historical, but currently is the only attraction in Disneyland where people want to ride it but don't "because its painful or jarring".

So I go to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee and I swear as I’m leaving the cafeteria I see the Matterhorn’s Yeti in the hallway walking into one of the conference rooms. I blink as if i have literally gone insane with sleeplessness so I look at the lineman working on the hallway’s ceiling and ask him “am I insane or did I just see the yeti walk in there?” He nodded and said “yeah you saw what you saw” and inferred it was a joke they were playing on one of the executives.
