They should have left in the scene where Nicola discovers Ollie's treachery. It's easy to forget that he has her to thank for his career advancement up until this point. If she hadn't joined DoSAC when she did, Ollie would probably have gone on to be nothing more than Ben's Glenn.

Eh there were a few years between spinners and losers and the start of season 3, it's implied that he remained as one of Hugh Abbot's special advisors, and it seems the events of the two specials weren't known by Hugh. Had Chris Langham not been a nonce forcing them to recast the minister I reckon it would have followed a similar trajectory and Ollie still would have become a senior advisor to the leader of the opposition, especially since he was chummy with Dan in the early seasons.
