Blair's behavior before he got locked up was perfectly rational and consistent with protecting humanity.

@@brandonflorida1092 you missed the point of my comment. Never claimed it wasn't any more than a theory, nor is it even something I'm 100% sold on. Just a possibility. But there is no more evidence of it being correct than what you said. Also, his behavior being rational is irrelevant since I also never disagreed with that. If he WAS indeed already infected, him being a perfect imitation would act and do things exactly like Blair. Plus, he could always have been smashing everything under the guise of making sure no one leaves to protect humanity, but in reality, just making sure no one can leave and warn the rest of the world while he escapes in his craft (which was obviously built simply to be able to reach the nearest civilization, not space)

I have worked in the military in arctic temps, and I have spent time as a marksmanship instructor, for reference. Shooting a small moving target from a helicopter, in sub-zero temps, while snowblind, wearing mittens, and through a scope (which would really be a hinderance in this scenario) is a one-in-a-hundred proposition for even an excellent marksman. Saying he’s a bad shot is pretty funny. Dude’s hands are no doubt frozen and it’s perfectly reasonable that he would lose his grip on the grenade also. When you get that cold your motor skills go to absolute crap, and even walking and talking become very difficult.

This movie scared the out of me when I was a kid. I'd lay in bed, in the dark, thinking of the forms it could take to get into the house, to my room, to me. And if I just stayed awake, maybe I could hear it coming and have a chance to run away.. Maybe I could stay awake.. This movie really messed me up. I'm a huge fan of this movie and the idea of the organism. I mean, I never want to ever encounter such an organism, but you get what I mean. Blair was human when they locked him in the shack. It got to him either by opening the door or by tunneling in. Or, technically, it could have become something very small, crawled in under the door and attacked him while he slept by entering through his ear or mouth, or, it doesn't really matter much, it could simply inject a bit of itself into you and you're pretty much done. The scary thing about the thing is that you can be almost completely sure you haven't gotten all of it. Let's just assume all of the thing that presented itself to Macready was destroyed, all cells dead, and let's assume neither Macready nor Childs is the thing. We still have so many unknowns. Was the giant thing that Macready blew up really all of it? Could it have split itself up with a few small parts going here and there, some burying themselves to freeze and wake up later? We don't know. And what about the Norwegian camp? And what about the UFO site? What about INSIDE THE UFO? And we remember, it only takes 1 thing cell to take over all life on earth. And let's say we've accounted for all those locations, what about other parts of the thing that may have crawled away from the ufo hundreds of thousands of years ago? It's possible the thing may have infected an entire ecosystem that ended up freezing all those thousands of years ago and is waiting to be thawed.. The more one thinks about it, the more it seems infinitely unlikely the thing has been completely destroyed. And then, consider that those aliens that crashed on earth, probably due to becoming overtaken by the thing while they were navigating, also are out there somewhere, and the thing is out there in space, having infected thousands of lifeforms on an unknown number of planets, and there's any number of ways they could potentially come to earth again. Perhaps the humans of earth will be the next space explorers to find it and make the mistake of having it on our ship with us.

The greatest horror movie in my humble opinion. As an animal lover i have to always remind myself, its not real and no animals were actually harmed 😅 i cant think of a movie with a more bleak scenario, except maybe The Road. You're dealing with an intelligent lifeform, you dont know if its malicious or simply trying to survive, its almost impossible to detect an assimilation without a specific test, if it just simply touches you youre dead, it can only be ended by fire/molecular acid, and if it reaches water or transportation, its not only the end for humanity but the entire globe. Ive always thought how interesting would it be to trap one in a room it cant escape and try speaking to it and reasoning with it. Every Winter when the wind howls...i think of this film

"I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is." Fun Fact: Can you spot the fake fact? Budget Friendly Fact: The Norwegian camp scenes were actually the charred remains of the American site from the end of the film. Rather than go to the expense of building and burning down another camp, John Carpenter re-used the destroyed American camp. Practical Effects Fact: The film is considered a benchmark in special make-up effects. The effects were created by Rob Bottin, who was only 22 when he started the project. To create the effect of the title, an animation cell with "The Thing" written on it was placed behind a smoke-filled fish tank which was covered with a plastic garbage bag. The bag was ignited, creating the effect of the title burning onto the screen. Ending Explained Fact: According to an apocryphal story first reported on Reddit in February 2013, when asked about the ambiguous ending of the film, John Carpenter responded that he never understood how could there be any confusion about whether Childs or MacReady are human or not, because the last scene shows: "Kurt Russell and Keith David staring each other down, harshly backlit. It's completely, glaringly obvious that Kurt Russell is breathing, and Keith David is not."

funny thing is, the “Norwegian footage“ is actually from the original thing from another world movie. and it’s highly unlikely that Blair was trying to build a ship to reach space. It would’ve been a possible with the technology available. More than likely he was just building a short range craft that would allow him to reach another base or the mainland.

The dog scene was actually done by Stan Winston. Stan Winston was already an established legend in practical effects so he asked that he not be credited for his work, because he didn't want any of the focus taken away from Rob Bottin. Winston's name didn't appear in the film's credits until much later.

It's a Super cell Organism, that has the ability to effect DNA changes at a extremely fast rate and copy cells.{ Of equal bio mass}. It's original form would have been a Super cell ameba.. From what i remember the writer and art concept person said: That ship was a Zoology craft, it had 8 aliens operating it. One of the animals on the ship was infected by the Thing, and it got out and infected the engineer. From that point before it had a chance to infect the pilot, the pilot forced a crash landing on earth. During the movie this makes sense because the shapes it takes, are not from Earth, but from what was captured on the ship. The creature after it infected Blair, passed on the knowledge of the engineer and pilot for him to build a ship from scratch and to fly it.

Just to show how smart the Thing really is... Just think that most viewers who see this for the first time, are almost always sympathetic to the Dog and hate the Norwegians. That's using the innocent "Man's Best Friend" as almost the PERFECT cover identity to lure You, the audience, into a false sense of sympathy. It's ALMOST as evil and nifarious as a child serial murderer being welcomed into a new home by a family who can only see what's on the outside and being completely ignorant of what horror lives underneath. Even if there are subtle clues that something just isnt right... It is very very hard to overcome that inate biological imperative to protect an "Innocent Child".

My personal belief is that Blair was infected before he destroyed the helicopter and radio... The reason for this is two fold. 1) The Thing organism's ultimate goal is survival and to spread but acts covertly, it wants to get out but at the same time wants to do it smartly. 2) Destroying the radio equipment and transportation keeps anyone from the outside catching on to what's going on in the camp. As Blair it Knows there are quarantine measures if anyone outside learns about the discovery of an organism, It Knows it's best chance is to isolate it's victims and pit them against each other until it's has either assimilated or killed all it's opposition at the camp and the assimilated "survivors" Will be checked up on when spring rotation comes or a rescue team is sent. Blair imitation knows that by destroying the means to communicate and travel, it gives him both time for himself and other imitations to assimilate or kill everyone else leaving no one behind to tell the truth to the rescue team AND throws off any suspicion on himself being an imitation. Plus, as a bonus... The other members choosing to isolate him in the tool shed could also be something the imitation Blair gambled on as well. Isolating Blair away from everyone else gave Imitation Blair the freedom and privacy to build a contingency plan D to build a craft that would enable escape if all other plans failed.
