Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! Today we look at "The Thing Around Your Neck" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. An amazing piece that I think will resonate with a lot of people and allow them to see themselves or have a window into a life that is different than theirs. Let's talk about what is the thing around your neck and what does it mean? With some questions on defining your future and performance for your race and others, we have a good talk planned today!

The part that really stuck out to me was, "You smiled tightly when they asked those questions. Your uncle told you to expect it; a mixture of ignorance and arrogance, he called it." A 'mixture of ignorance and arrogance' just nails it, especially for how her partner is.

Great story that literally puts you in someone else's shoes with the second person narrative. Reminded me of an old Choose Your Own Adventure story except this was much more poignant and touching. 7.5/10. Definitely worth a read for those who haven't!

Many cultures (Black Asian diaspora) will 2nd guess traveling 4 a wedding; but drop a baby 2 attend a funeral. It is collective closure. I think the blank Fortune cookie symbolizes the blankness of relationship for her overall being.

I actually have seen this story and the collection it's named after covered on some other channels that got me interested enough to put it on my list of things I want to get to. I think what aspect I find the most attractive about this story is the flipping of the cultures - I'm curious to see how I'll view it from where my little feet stand. Also, I don't put ketchup OR mustard on my hot dogs...also thanks because I watched this and had to grill some hot dogs for lunch. :D

I have to say, I don't believe I have ever heard of this work, but I am going to look it up right away. It sounds very interpretive, and if you can insert Fievel Goes West to help explain it--it has to be a good story. Haha.

Furst I relate to this heavy, I've had plenty of struggle with conflicting expectations. Is there anything more about her writing style other than it's in 2nd person? Does it feel oppressive or antagonistic to read? I'd like that a lot

I think Krypto and I had maybe different feelings on that. He'd say yes. My limited knowledge on what you've talked about I wouldn't think you would but we all have different experiences for how we relate to books.

I'm battling the urge to read or not read this...mostly because I don't know if I want to get slapped with brass knuckles and sandpaper. Maybe just one but not BOTH at once 🤣
