Except that from her speech, it's not her gender that made her do this speech so you don't need to be proud of being a woman because she did a great job. It's ability skill and talent and not gender that produced it. Plus her speech should not make us proud of Africa or womanhood but it's a gentle rebuke that we need to do better. "you should aim to be successful, but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man" so true! I'm studying to be a lawyer and I once got told that I should get married before I qualify as an advocate because it will be harder for me to find a husband thereafter. Is that all my existence as a woman is reduced to? A wife? Not a woman who is able to be strong, independent and impact her environment? I would rather die alone, an accomplished successful lawyer, than submit to the patriarchal standards of my society, thank you very much.

I certainly support you in your journey, but I have the funny feeling that you will be quite mad when you happen to wake up someday and realize that you are in your late 30's with a strong wish for children creeping into your head and no "suitable" man around to fulfill that wish. Just make sure that you are aware of the consequences and hardiness of stepping outside the beaten path and if that is truly what you want in your life. If that is not the case, then you set yourself up for a lot of late grief...just saying, you wouldn't be the first woman to regret. Biology can be a bitch, just keep that in mind.

I remember my English professor at university made us read Adichie's book called "Purple Hibiscus" & I had no interest in it or any of the books written by Africans that were part of the English module, because I knew its rare to find journal articles to reference since not many people analyze African writers. Silly me I thought I'll definitely fail that module, but the moment i started reading her book I couldn't put it down & the more my professor gave us a background story about Adichie my interest for her work grew. In conclusion my final mark for that module in that semester was 80% & starting from then I learnt to respect African authors because their writing is just excellent.

I'm sorry,but you clearly have no comprehension of what feminism really is. Feminism does focus more on women,mostly because women face social injustice far more than men these days,but it's also concerned about men,especially male rape victims. The name has 'fem' in it because it was started by women,but it does not under any circumstance help only women. Why do you think we're so against patriarchy? Because it was PATRIARCHY that teaches us that men want to have sex all the time and therefore actually enjoy rape,as gruesome as it sounds. That's what we're against. What you're trying to call me has a name and it's a misandrist,which I'm not. ''Feminazis'' as you'd like to call them are misandrists,not feminists. It's not just about legal protection,it's about the way society percieves women.

At 16 I was told by a friend that no honorable man will marry me because I want to make a documentary on prostitutes . I told her that I don't want to marry a man whose fragile ego is more important to than what an entire segment of society is going through.
@james3876
@james3876 Жыл бұрын
Most guys probably don't care about that, but things which mark you as a flight risk matter alot. Guys get destroyed when a marriage ends, their suicide rate is 9 times higher than the average woman going through the same thing. So it's not the prostitutes, which should be a more respected industry than it is, it's about whether your behavior gives off red flags that you'll be a quitter down the line

Blown away. She is articulate, well-mannered and also clear on the points. ***** I'm sorry, what? Did you not understand anything that was said in this speech? What part of articulate and well-mannered offended you, exactly? The fact that I am praising and appreciating someone's ability to perform a speech. Or should I have commented on how she looks? I'm sorry, what did you expect ME to have replied and commented on this video? If you are implying I have said something sexist, I beg you to please show me exactly how I have managed to do that. And if you are right I will apologise. But as far as I am aware, I did not say anything that related towards her gender, and if it is my glee and appreciation towards her delivery that makes you think it is implied sexism, then you are wrong. I do not expect anyone to give an immaculate speech, man or woman, and my appreciation for that has nothing to do even remotely with gender, and your reaction towards that is completely unwarranted and unnecessary. But even if I had expected something (hey it's a ted talk - so it must be great!), it is still part of me as a person to appreciate and celebrate that (the specific thing I even stated in my comment). Thank you.
@jpage813
@jpage813 10 жыл бұрын
Nanciefy Amber wasn't saying that your comment implied sexism, she was saying that it implied racism- the first sentence anyway. Historically if a white person says that a black person is "articulate" and "well-mannered" or anything of that nature it comes off as "Wow! I didn't know you people could form complete sentences and conduct yourselves with the rest of society!" I'm sure that's not what you were going for, but I'm 99.9% sure that is why she was offended.
@Nanciefy
@Nanciefy 10 жыл бұрын
What does that say about someone's expectations of me? For someone to take what I said and assume it had something to do with that, to twist a compliment, what does that say about their expectation of me, and should I also be offended by that? I won't be. But it's ironic. Thanks for explaining anyway. It's definitely not what I was going for. I do find it funny how she had to find something bad in my comment though when just a few comments down there are people blatently saying obscene things. Either way, I am sorry for anyone who interpretted it that way.
@jpage813
@jpage813 10 жыл бұрын
Nanciefy You're welcome! I don't think you should be offended, because people just process information through the prism of their own experiences. So, if someone has experiences with something negative (like racism), things that could be misconstrued as such will more than likely be viewed that way.

Kunal carter No u r an idiot LOL if you are a man be a masculinist... not a little puppy dog to women. These women are just butthurt that they are the weaker sex, and so now seek to TRY to dominate men, which they will never do because men are naturally the dominant sex, and so will always be the strongest and will always be the leaders both in the relationship and also out of it in the world, in every field man dominate, every invention that makes womens lives easier was invented by a man, the only thing that can be attributed to a woman is the invention of something entirely useless such as the toilet seat, yes i think a women invented that, it was something to do with a toilet, anyhow, men have invented everything, cars, planes, refrigeration, cooking appliances, men dominate and women cannot compete with men, not in a boxing ring, not in a chess match, the greatest fighters are men, the greatest chess players in the world are men, there is no match for the males physical prowess nor his intellectual capabilities, women are there to be submissive to men and to follow a mans command, not to dominate, but to follow behind the man, and to bring the next generation into this world,...

Sebastian Caine this is the only reason why we need more feminists in the world. Just bc of people like you who don't see women as equal. Women could have invented many things in the past but they never got the chance to bc even in the past people listened to men and thought women are dumb to invent anything. Feminists don't wanna dominate in any way. They just want to be treated equally like men and I don't think that's a bad thing. They also want opportunities to excel in market and business and politics. They can compete in it with men but our society doesn't see them as compatible. But the world is changing and they are surely getting equal rights. Stop being a dick head and respect women bc she brought you in this world by keeping you inside her for 9 months. Men can't do that and it requires dedication and patience and now you're repaying it by talking crap about them? Grow some balls dude and by respecting women and fighting for their rights won't make you less of a man.

@MrKunal123321
@MrKunal123321 9 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Caine that's your opinion sir and you're entitled to it but I think differently. I completely agree if a man works harder for a certain job then women then he should surely be paid more but for the same work and same amount of strength if the woman is paid less than that's inequality and Sir you are forgetting that women work day and night to take care of their jobs and when they return home they also need to do the house chores and also take care of their kids whereas when men come home from work they are lazy lads and depend totally on women. My mother used to work 9 hrs daily and then also used to work at house to do the entire house chores without breaking a sweat or complaining bc that's what the society has implemented on women from ages. Women may not be equal in strength then men but they surely have more will power and patience then men. You should appreciate that and support women rights bc there are many single mothers in the world who are striving day and night just so they can give their children a better future whereas their fathers abandon them to live with some other women. This is called dedication and they surely are more dedicated than men.

Why isn't feminism speaking up about the sexism of the draft? Should only men be forced to die for their country? Or what about the fact that women receive 40% less jail time for equivalent crimes? No, instead they focus on how men should't have to hide their emotions. Hiding tears isn't about masculinity, nor is it a concern. Its a maturity thing, crying has an appropriate social context.

The problem is Patriarchy, the system that puts men into powerful or tough macho positions. Courts, Military, CEO's, Police, Congress, all littered with men. These are all powerful and tough positions that alter the way we live. And yet people always go back to OMG THE DRAFT! Why don't they talk about that? This reminds me of years ago, back in secondary school when a teacher divided my class into two groups for a quiz. Boys versus Girls and at the end of the quiz the girls won and he said to us (guys) "Why did you let the girls win?" I complained that he was being sexist by assuming that the girls won because we allowed them to win and he called me a woman and insulted me. Funny enough, everyone in class laughed at me, including the girls. Like Chimamanda expounds here, some African women aren't raised to be feminist, and I grew up believing everyone is equal, not just gender but race and sexuality. It is ok for a man to be feminist too, as John Stuart Mill supported the equality of women and the freedom of individuals.

I love this, I love coming back to watch it, love seeing the comments who understand and appreciate. Going to ignore those that struggle to understand that discussing one problem doesn't eliminate other problems and that a problem can be exacerbated or dimnished in different situations. Privelege, most of the time, is accidental because we can't anticipate where and what we'll be born as but like in all aspects of living it comes with responsibilities e.g. eating to keep on living and being alive is a privilege. So we should seek to understand our privilege and use it for making things better, not worse. Having privilege doesn't make you immune to trauma or discrimnation but in general shouldn't the goal be to eliminate all unjust discrimination on things we had no choice over?

of course you should do that, but while doing that make sure there is no "boys only" work like : cutting grass or fixing appliances in the house if not the societal effects would not be equal it will be reverse. Most of these domestic work stereotypes were actually created in african settings due to the fact that there are a lot of jobs like heavy farming, cutting firewood e.t.c that were heavily physical and so were exclusively male and so women took up other jobs in order to balance labor. It's important that while we are changing the society we do not break it

+lexluther512 Men and women are about equally victims of domestic abuse actually. Sadly, men have almost no shelters to go to, yet women have plenty all over the place. As for women in wars and fire fighters, interesting fact, women have lower standards than men for physical fitness for certain positions and promotions in those fields. Breast cancer gets a hell of a lot more funding than prostate cancer, and men have been turned away from free breast cancer screenings on quite a few occasions. Men get screwed a hell of a lot more in divorce than women do. Especially when it comes to being jailed over not paying child support, or having to pay child support or get custody of the children at all. Plus it is not until recently, and thanks to father's rights groups, yet this is not policy everywhere, that men can get a dna test to see if they even are the father of the child without the mother's permission. Let alone the draft, women can fight in wars. Yes. But they will never be compelled to against their will. Men on the other hand, can be drafted. As for the homeless being mostly men, that is because women have various support structures that are not available to men. For instance, they could just get pregnant, and live off of the state. Or go to one of the many women's shelters that are all over the place and get support.

SystematicSarah No, it's not wrong to compare the "oppression" women face. Especially when you are trying to determine which is the more important issue to address, or which is demonstrably hurting women more. Where as you have a bunch of women in the west crying persecution and oppression because a guy sits on a train with his legs spread, or there is an advertisement with a thin woman in it, there are girls in Africa that literally have their growing pubescent breasts beat down with hot sticks, and their clitoris removed via unsanitary sharp stones. Where you have women in the west claiming they are oppressed because a scientist wore a shirt they don't like, or there are too few video game characters they like, there are women in the Islamic world that were made to marry older men when they were just kids, and can't go out in public without draping themselves in sheets and being escorted by a man. The difference is you see, women are not oppressed in the West. There is just this ridiculous ideology called feminism that does everything to convince them that they are. To the point where they ignore the suffering of men, and go after the most inane innocuous bullshit to validate their persecution complex. Where as in other parts of the world, women actually are being oppressed.

What i find funny is people commenting here that "feminists hate men" or "feminists want to be superior"... I mean, DID YOU EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO? wtf are you here for then? Haven't you got anything else to do besides hate on people fighting for equal rights? Ignorance doesn't give you free ticket to talk shit on the internet. Google feminism, please. And btw, keep in mind that feminism does favor men as well. Like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie beautifully mentions in the video, you are all expected to be the one with the money, or to be extremly tough, to an extent that anything as little as carrying your girlfriend/wife's purse on the mall can damage and put to risk your masculinity/sexuality (that was just an example okay) Also, yes men are raped. But they are never blamed for it. "What were you thinking? Walking alone at that time of the night in a deserted street? You certainly wanted to get raped, (insert male name here)." THAT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HEAR, although the other way around is pretty common. Also, if men are raped, the shame in assuming it is SO HUGE that most keep it a secret. It shouldn't be, since it wasn't the victim's fault. Again, patriarchy implies that men being raped is shameful. "Why should he admit it, if it probably damaged his masculinity, anyway?" Can you see where I'm getting at? So PLEASE PLEASE people, get to know a movement before judging it.

As much as I support feminism because I care about the women in my life, like my wife and my daughter and countless other family and friends, I also know that I (a man) benefit directly from it. Much of what MRA's talk about are issues that feminism has been addressing for generations. Also, you suggest "google feminism." Here's an idea for critics of feminism -- try picking up a damn book! I've been reading "Feminist Theory" by bell hooks. I highly recommend it.

And since many information-seekers are angry to begin with, which sites do you think they'll visit first? Here's an interesting thing I read just today in the book I mentioned: She says that many women who have clearly and obviously benefitted directly from the feminist movement will almost invariably distance themsleves from it, and trash feminism. Even though they will agree with all of its aims, point by point. And this was published *in 1984!*

Except feminism is meant to divide. One in four American women are on antidepressants. According to studies and reports women have never been so unhappy since they started taking these surveys in the 1930s.

Nicole Hart hi! I didn't get what was the problem with the comment you have commented on ; the one "freedom of speech is cool but can you find the person who asked?". I sincerely want to know as I didn't get the issue of their statement; might be a language problem but your clarification would help. Thanks

I don't know where you've been raised that it's taught like that. But I feel sorry for you, feel even more sorry for the people who were raised to think women are innocent until proven guilty and that men are guilty until proven innocent. Or in other words, our modern law

BrightBlackDaylight He's not worth arguing to. If you look into his channel, he's a troll. You cant just talk sense into trolls. They are not interested in what's right or wrong, they're here for the attention.

By his replies, u can see Johnnie is contradicting his own words. By saying ''how are you discriminated against'' just shows that he's anti feminist and all the things chimamanda is saying in this speech about gender, males in specific, is disclosing him. You must be really blind and stupid not to understand what chimamanda is saying and/or is trying to say in this speech about how men and women and how they have built assumptions about gender differences. He's either not watched the whole speech or just haven't watched it at all and as Kasumi said, you can't just talk sense into trolls/ignorants. Enough said from me,have a nice day.

***** OMG, I can't believe you actually put effort to type down that bullshit. What? "women and men actually rape each other at similar rates."??? I don't know what kind of sick twisted way that you have to meticulously pick to define rape, even the sound of this is extremely ridiculous. Even if you are anti-feminist, pick something that are actually debatable. I don't reply to troll and feed them attention esp when they have lost all sense of logic. But I just can't believe that you think you can fool anyone with that terrible crap you made up. Seriously? I stop reading and skip the rest right after that. You're weak at reasons.

After watching this talk, I felt a sense of pride. The events she cites where gender inequality is obvious are things I can't relate to, despite being a girl. Looking back at how I was raised, I felt grateful to my parents. They taught my brother and I differently; they raised us equally. My brother isn't pushed to "man up", nor am I pushed to get married. I was raised in a house where there was no such thing as gender roles. If only the rest of the world would raise the next generation like that, too.

I've been raised the same way! Only now, my brother has suddenly started talking to me about how feminists are weak women asking for special attention. He grew up just like me and assumes everyone did. He even asked me to watch some milo yanapolis videos. Whoever that is. Milo seems like an advocate for anti feminism. My brother doesn't realize that that just because our parents raised us equally doesn't mean all daughters had that privilege. I just realized this. Thanks for your comment.
