OK - This is a snippet of the Fan-Edit of the two THE THING movies, using deleted footage and edited conjoined films. I apologise for the reasonably poor quality, but it was made over 5 yrs ago now, a very early project which cost me an entire iMac and another big HD that died struggling with an 80 GB working file....also it was DVD sourced, not BluRay, i didn't have a clue what i was doing or how to master....i really cut/destroyed my teeth on this, taking 6 months in all due to multiple f***-ups and crashes and restarts. This version i was able to edit to a section, unlike the version with no sound.....
THIS clip of the 'working print' / first finished master (which had to be down-sized to under 1GB) takes you from Kate facing off against Sander-Thing in the spaceship right up to Gary shooting Lars in the eyeball at Outpost #31. It's how i altered the ending from the 2011 version into something more expositional and workable as a direct timeline: We already know the Thing survives anyhow, so why bother with the devicive copycat chess-standoff and fade-out. We also guessed that as soon as Carter and Kate split up, he was toast - if she sees him again she has to assume he's the thing now, which would've the whole Sander sequence moot and it a different approach was not shot/released [LET US HAVE THE ORIGINAL ADI VERSION, PLEASE!] and my budget doesn't stretch to writing and filming a whole new segment - why we need footage of the pilot - so this solves a number of pointless irritating sagas regarding the minutae of continuity, but you're welcome to discuss pros & cons of the way i've structured it.
As it happens, the whole project had to be split in half to work on, and anyone out there reckons they know the exact point when they join are welcome to point it out, but it was necessary and most people can't tell or are totally wrong anyway....and i know the Norsk translation is a little off, but not far off, and i was working without the actual Norse translation, sometimes blatantly just guessing, so apologies to my Scandinavian massive....
I personally offense that Kristoffer Joner wasn't in the remake, which would've granted more gravitas to the 2011 movie.
