Any time anything relates to being "ahead of its time", The Thing should always be used as an example of such. And Blade Runner. Same year and released right next to eachother. The critics for these two films were out of their depth. Its not opinion: they were utterly, completely and comprehensively wrong about these two films and today they look like the complete fools that they are. Whether you like these two movies or not is irrelevant. If someone csn deny they are cinematic masterpieces they are simply fools who know nothing about the art of cinema. The critics of 1982 were simply scared of what they were watching. They were completely out of their depth and lacked the talent to review such timeless works of art. 4 decades after their release people still recognize the brilliance of these movies and still will 4 more decades from now.

I remember watching this movie when I was 15 years old. I was at my grandparents house, in a small village that hardly had electricity, during the worst winter that year. It was night, snow was falling so hard that the bottom windows of a house were covered in white. My grandparents had an old black and white TV set, it was very late at night when we all gathered around to watch a movie that we knew nothing about. When the first beats of this music started followed with a bleak snowy landscapes I immediately knew it was a horror movie and felt such upcoming dread like I never felt before. All I can say, it was best movie experience I ever had, pushed to the maximum with the setting I was already in. That night there were no sleep. XD

Exactly, and they rarely make films like this anymore, actual films, that have soul and a soundtrack that really adds to the whole experience..nowadays they are just movies that while may be enjoyable, they are not works of art and only made to take in as much money as possible. There are still some rare gems that occur from time to time that are still works of art, but they are few and far between sadly. The classics aren't classics for nothing, but everything they did! And newer movies make that mistake all the time, they only focus on part of the experience, not everything they possibly can to make the film really be something special.

Interesting that John Carpenter didn't like that famous poster when he first saw it. He worried that people would take the movie as another cheap "man in a monster costume" horror flick, and overlook the immense amount of work by Rob Bottin in creating the gruesome alien abominations crucial to its thematic appeal. Eventually though he became fine with it, because it's such a great poster regardless.

@@maxell149 That's pretty much it, plus what I wrote about "man in a costume". That was a very dull, overplayed and monodominant technique in scary movies of the day, and The Thing's cutting edge graphical monstrousities really pushed the boat out from that, so Carpenter was sensitive to anything that might detract. Video games like the exceptional Dead Space owe a lot, maybe everything even, to The Thing.

One of the main advantages of "The Thing" 1982, in addition to the practical effects of Rob Bottin and the direction of John Carpenter, is the soundtrack of Ennio Moricone. @@grahamwilliams1569 Haha, that's cool. I have a lot of favorite movies but if you put a gun to my head and say pick one, I pick The Thing. So yeah, I'm pretty well versed with anything on The Thing. Here's something that'll blow your mind, because I've been interested in this movie and wanting to find out everything going on in it since I was like 12. But it was only about two years ago that I saw this certain thing pointed out in a video and I had never noticed it. Light is always reflected in the eyes, like in any movie you'll see like a pixel of white inside the eyes of characters. Look at Palmer during the blood test. That little white gleam of light is missing from his eyes, but present in every other character. They purposefully set up the shot to somehow make sure there's no light in his eyes, making him look noticably more dead in the eyes. I can't believe they went to that trouble for a detail that you can't stop noticing if you find out about it, but otherwise, it'll barely constitute a feeling in the pit of your stomach.

This was the first 18 rated film I went to see at the cinema and still to this day one of my favourite films. The soundtrack itself is so perfectly pitched for the film. Remember quite clearly critics blasting it for is nihilistic theme and score...the same critics who now cite it as one of the greatest horrors ever made. Felt very sorry for Mr Carpenter at the time.

An happy, alternative, ending was filmed for this great movie, were Macready is rescued, takes a blood test. passes it, end credits roll. It was never shown despite being filmed, instead, director John Carpenter choose the ambiguous bleak ending with either Macready or Childs as the alien.

There is a video game for PlayStation 2 that carpenter had stated is canon and a direct sequel. I had chance watching this movie in a school dormitory on our last few days of our school final semester back in 1983, I was 15 years old then. The whole class went into deep eerie silence, not knowing what going to happen next. Felt like the thing were among us and watching us closely. I fell in love with this movie and began following John Carpenter's movie. The music still rings in my ear and whenever or wherever I pass by any quiet place or alleys, this boom boom base sounds will come back haunting me.

I don't know if that was in the US, but here in the UK, the New Musical Express (which was a massive music / rock paper at the time selling a million copies a week) made this their film of the year (in a list of 100 films) And printed a still from the film with MacReady with a shotgun and the remaining crew facing an unknown enemy.

Very synthy and atmospheric, not rushed at all. A very thought provoking soundscore. I love this film very much and i still like to view it on analog formats after a hard day's work (Beta, VHS, Laserdisc, CED and VHD.) I was born in 1982 and i still value the amount of work put into all aspects of this film. It seems like it only gets more popular and more appreciated with each passing year. The soundscore can be found on ebay on audio cassette once in a while. A highly collectible film.
