The deal-breaker for this (and too many other slings) for photography is that most people are right-handed (and of course, nearly all cameras have right-hand grips), and it makes sense to have your camera strap over your left shoulder, so the camera hangs to your right (much easier/more natural to swing the camera up for use that way). Therefore, camera sling bags should all have right shoulder straps, so you can wear the camera strap on the left shoulder, balancing the load and allowing you to rotate the bag to access the contents from the top--that's the WHOLE POINT of a sling bag!!! This means you're always ready to get the shot (if you keep the camera in the bag, by the time you can get it out, you may have missed the shot). I just don't understand this lack of logical design. It would also be easy to design a bag so the sling could be worn over either shoulder and allow access from either side (with two-way zippers with travel limiters to prevent dumping your gear). Obviously, messenger bags have such flexibility, but they're not secure enough for technical hiking/climbing/bike riding. Maybe I need to start a new company to make the "perfect" bag, because I've yet to see one. Some are close (Lowepro and a few others have the basic concept right, but the camera compartments are too small for me).

First, thankyou so much for the comments! Great to have you here. 😁🙏🏾 You raise some really interesting points and I'm curious if you would start a company to develop a sling that does exactly what you have in mind! I'm a massive sling bag fan and would love to see what you develop! I've been thinking of putting a video together for another sling I have which I love. Curious to get your thoughts on that one. What gear do you have and use regularly?

@@TrueNorf Thanks for the reply (especially as it was two years ago that you posted this). I too feel that sling bags are the best choice for anyone who wants to be ready for any photographic situation, but a bridge camera (e.g., Lumix FZ1000 or Sony RX10) doesn't quite cover* things. My main "field kit" is a Lumix G9 with battery grip (I'm about to buy a G9 ii) and six lenses, covering 12-800mm EFL (given MFT's 2x crop factor, so a 122° to 3° AoV), including 2x macro. I have a sling bag that can accommodate all of that, but it's a tight squeeze. I hope to "test drive" a Lowepro Slingshot SL 250 AW III tomorrow to see if it will work. I have a Lowepro ProTactic AW450 II, but that's too large for technical hiking/climbing/etc. (and of course, needs to be removed for gear access, but it's great for airliners and accommodates my tripod for the rare cases I use it). Of course, options include leaving one or more lenses (and the battery grip) home, or perhaps I could stuff one or more lenses in the upper compartment. The Slingshot would work for me if they made the bottom "camera" compartment larger (therefore the top one smaller to keep the same overall dimensions) and/or made it wider (front-to-back) or added an "expansion feature" (as on some luggage). I want to do more research before considering the enormous hassle of "building my own" bags, and frankly, I'd rather be making more photos! Meantime, maybe the companies I've contacted will come through for those of us who want more than they're providing at the moment. *Obviously, no camera/system can "do it all," but bridge cameras are a great compromise that work "~95%" of the time. It's just that some of us are willing to carry a bit more stuff to get a few more shots, and that's where slings shine. If you think about it, it's kind of ridiculous how easy we have it now compared to the greats like Ansel, the Westons, et al, but that's the thing about tech--the more you see what it can do, the more you want it all (but that's another discussion)...

@@ddsdss256 No problem! Elated you stopped by. Given you had made a comment, I definitely should respond. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. You clearly use epic equipment and I'm keen to hear how you get on with the Lowepro Slingshot SL 250 AW! You've inspired me to create a video on one of my favourite slings. I 100% agree - You should be out taking photos, not designing slings! That said, I'd be keen to see what you come up with as a concept!

@@TrueNorf Well, I tried the Lowepro and it just wasn't large enough (nor were any of the slings I tried), so I ended up with a PD everyday backpack zip 15L (I'm wondering if I should've gone with the 20L, but I'm re-thinking the need to carry six lenses and a battery grip every time). It's a clever design, with four pulls, so you can open either side as you would a sling (taking one strap off, of course). I also picked up that G9 II, so I'm more psyched to play with that!

@@ddsdss256 Great choice! Given you've got to carry a lot of gear, I think I'd agree with you about upgrading to the 20L. And the G9II?! You've got much playing around to do! Let me know how you get on with them both! 😁👍🏾

I'm in the same place. I'm ready to go sling. I've got the Urban Retrospective Backpack 15, and I think I'll be taking too much camera stuff while traveling. But I need something that accommodates an iPad Pro 12.9". I'm wondering if I could flatten the Turnstyle 10 and place it in my check-in luggage, and use the Retrospective 15 backpack for airplane carry on, and then switch to the sling while touring? I use Fujifilm mirrorless X-H1 and XPro3. I do have a Peak Design 10L sling, but I don't think it will collapse in my carry-on luggage as well as the Thinktank?
@TrueNorf2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments Bill! Not sure if you plan to take both out with you on a given day, however you may already know, Thinktank do the larger 20 V2 that could accommodate both your cameras? It may be a touch too small fot the iPad Pro 12.9. I'm curious to know what you choose! Let me know! I recently came back from a trip with the 10 V2 flat-packed and for me, it flattens well!

@@TrueNorf Oh, I have *so* many, but I do have a few favs. My Incase Ari is probably my go-to out and about bag. Carrying light, that is, but it carries a whole lot more. Remarkable bag. A Think Tank Sling-o-matic 20 for pure photography, carrying loads, and a PGYTech OneMo for doing the same as the Sling-o-matic 20 but a little more, for when at a festival. Have bought the Access 10 simply for something smaller than the Ari and stripped down for using just a couple of camera bodies with small primes. I must admit to liking Think Tank a lot. The bags show thought, and the workmanship inspires confidence...

@@andybycz The ThinkTank Access 10 reminds me of the Wandrd Roam 9L Sling….which I LOVE! It’s my FAVOURITE sling all day long! It adds a little more functionality above the Turnstyle 10 V2. I’ll make a video on it at some point soon. It really is fantastic! Curious though, why did you go for the Access 10? What drew you to it?
@andybycz Жыл бұрын
@@TrueNorf Well, the Wandrd just seems a bit too much for me. I have my other, larger slings if I want to carry more, while the Access 10 is a little smaller, neater, and more compact. Means I can carry a little kit without mucking up my Ari all the time or dragging around my sling-o-matics

@andybycz I did not have the pleasure of the Ari, so the Wandrd and the Turnstyle 10 V2 are my small goto. The Urban Access 15 and now the Pete McKinnon 35L are my travel packs for gear. Love them both!
