If you couldn't pacstrap from your college WiFi, it's certainly because you weren't connected to its captive portal. The problem is that you couldn't get any response other than 404 from any mirror. This makes me believe that your requests got redirected to the website of your college (in order for you to login). Creating a wifi hotspot bypass the captive portal because you're already connected to it on your raspberrypi. You could have connected directly on your ThinkPad by using a text based web browser like lynx.
@Converge2Diverge4 жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. It is weird since I was not prompted the captive portal on my Raspberry Pi but was on my ThinkPad, but I guess it is what it is. I had no idea I could use a text based browser like Lynx to avoid this issue, so thank you for sharing! I will try that method instead next time.

Something similar happened to me but a bit worst in some regards, and less bad in other regards, when I installed Arch on my main PC, my main PC has a PCIe Wifi card, that in order to use I needed to install a broadcom driver... and since it's a full PC I didn't want to move the whole PC to where the router was to connect with a cable or to buy a long enough cable, so in order to install since you need internet connection I did a minimal install using my cellphone's 4G connected via USB, that worked really good, after the manual minimal installation I booted into the system and installed the broadcom driver and there I was able to use the WiFi to install the remaining stuff I wanted.

I've done similar with an old macbook on student accommodation wifi, it's a pain in the ass to config all the wireless settings (thankfully drivers for the wifi chip on the USB worked). Pretty much you need to edit the configs so that your credentials go through. Was cool for a while but I had recurring driver issues post install and my roommate gave me his old thinkpad for cheap which I then also had to jump through said hoops to chuck arch on. tl;dr enterprise wifi and minimal install environments suck.
