Hey, the main channel is still not one of the featured channels in the channel tab. That may help with conversion.

The video didn't mention but the road from Gridanian out of the black shroud to Thanalan/Ul'dah was basically sprinkled with average level 30-40 monsters, a couple of higher 60+ ones and two NM spawn points (basically named field bosses). This was in addition to the fact that several of them also inflicted poision. So you had to run through narrow tunnels/ramp chokepoints with enemies sitting on them and no way to go around or wait for an opening where you couldn't afford to get hit even once. It also didn't help that the Girdania region had a slower leveling curve due to its environment and a couple of fiascos. The good low/medium level (15-40) spots were near Uldah and Limsa. While one of the beginning enemies(level 2 fungars) had a poison attack that was strong enough to take out level 10s without curative assistance, and given the grindy/BETA START nature of the time it took a small bit of time before characters started getting healing/esuna abilities. (There was a period of time where it was suggested to buy the relatively expensive potions/antidotes as soon as possible just to avoid this problem) During the early beta, there would be convoys/suicide runs of 30+ players running in a herd to try to maximize survivors who could make it out. Higher level players/friends from the other city states would come to help body block the enemies to protect the convoy. I still remember running into Sirrocco and the Faerie Queen NMs on my first convoy, each one took out a dozen runners with a single attack, the handful of survivors that made it out dropped even further because some people got really curious if the Cactaur de Sols right outside the Black Shroud were grindable and got wiped out from Thousand Needles.

While I can see why 1.0 was such an off-putting experience in so many respects, you don't really get stories like this coming out of the post-2.0 game because the overworld experience is so utterly frictionless. Every area proceeds with a smooth difficulty curve, but the curve starts at too many difficulty degrees too low. There's no sense of danger or adventure in exploring most of the game -- while I love the experience overall I genuinely hate the overworld's difficulty balance.

@5:07 an old game i still go back to in private servers is Ragnarok Online taht does this. I could spend hours literally just window shopping even when we have a @ command for searching for specific items.

Yeah , I also remembered RO. But our private shard had website that had search option through market stalls.

They really wanted to emulate FF11 1.0, where you had to physically move between locations unless you were a white mage or black mage with teleport spells. On a side note, there is no requirement to use Aetheryte in current ffxiv until Endwalker. Unless you count the 2.x primals.

In FFXI, there were no retainers. Due to limitations in the market boards, which DID exist in XI but had a lot of prohibited items and a max of 10 items per sale per person at a time, people would literally stand overnight outside of the city of Jeuno in the zone Rolanberry Fields with items for sale on their main characters (or in rare cases, a second alt character that they paid a dollar for. Since only one character could be logged in at a time, that was usually only done if your main character was trapped in MSQ in a faraway expansion with no easy way home or had a full inventory.) None of the market boards were connected to one another, for that matter. The pile of player characters standing outside of Jeuno was nicknamed the "Rolanmart." Market prohibited items sold there included relic weapon currency, NM pop items, quest items, and other stuff. People could also browse your character with those items for sale inside a city, so occasionally you'd get a message just standing around doing story quests that someone was examining what you had for sale. The system in 1.0 was an attempt to marry the Rolanmart system to the retainer system, so people wouldn't have to pay a dollar extra to have their alt standing overnight, but 2.0 nixed that idea and went back to charging extra for more than two retainers but adding in a real market board again. Retainers obviously use fewer resources to keep visible overnight than a real character, so letting players log off and having a retainer on standby sort of made sense, but in practice it was *awful awful awful* to check them for EVERYTHING and the first thing Yoshi P did when he took over 1.0 was add in a friggin search option!

The earliest example of the retainer-style market board I can think of is EverQuest 1.0, with the Shadows of Luclin expansion. Prior to this expansion, all trade was done in zones that the community organically decided on, through zone-wide communication, such as /shout. (/shout WTS FBSS 9K OBO EC T1 - "Want to sell Flowing Black Silk Sash for 9k or best offer, located at torch 1 in East Commonlands.") SoL introduced a hub area called the Nexus, and attached to it was The Bazaar. You could purchase a bazaar license, and then AFK your ACTUAL CHARACTER there to set up as an NPC vendor to sell your items. Yes, you could not play the game while selling gear. And as for leaving the game running in the background while you do something else...? This expansion released in 2001, the era of dial-up on its way out and DSL lines holding up the internet. Computers could barely multi-task; leaving the game running meant you needed a second computer to do something else. And just like the video mentioned above for 1.0, there was no search system - at least not until the next expansion released and it was added in.

Kyle, if you liked the idea of those awful retainer vendors, you'd probably quite like the way Elder Scrolls Online does their player marketplace! Guilds can bid on trader NPCs to act as guild-specific marketboards in different areas of the world. It's actually quite fun to "go shopping" for stuff, though there's obviously fan-made tools to make it easier for you. It also means that if you're part of a small guild that can only afford a trader in some obscure small town, you have a reason to go to that location outside of questing or just passing through.

i really hate the word Fetch quest. as any thing in a game can be melted down in to a fetch quest of some sort.. what it really means is that the story/lore/explanation is bad according to the person saying it, yet without getting a feel for his idea of what the person thinks is good or bad about it.

I'd love for them to bring back bazaars from XI. I always enjoyed checking what people were selling when I was out in the world. Maybe they wouldn't be as useful seeing as you're always a teleport away from a market board or your retainer in XIV.

The retainer market kinda leftover from ffxi, where people would sell items on their character or alt. No search, just a bunch of random shops. there was auction house in ffxi blind bidding...
@AgentRedShirt
@AgentRedShirt Жыл бұрын
I both loved and hated the 11 auction house system. Couldn’t see what the actual prices were for sale, you could only see what the last one sold for. And you just have to keep bidding higher and higher until finally it let you buy it. Here’s the problem. Putting something up for sale on the auction house was kind of a gamble, because whatever the lowest price was was the first one to get sold. But since you didn’t know what people actually put theirs up for, you had no way of knowing where on the list you were. You could get lucky and just listed for 1 Gil. And hope somebody bought it for close to what the last one sold for was, but it was a gamble.

I disagree, there's much more going on in FFXIV involving politics. They had FF11 and all they have to do was up the graphic and design. FFXIV can't survive if you take out the storyline. If the pie doesn't taste good no matter how much cream and cherry on top you have, it isn't going to make it better. Take out the storyline I dare you. If in 2000 you can make a great game why can't you do it now? That's the question.
