My favorite movie. It took hours to shoot the cat and shoes sequence because of non cooperative cats (four were used) and involved among other things coating shoe laces with sardines. Needless to say it's not actually Orson Welles' shoes/legs you see but a stand in for the studio shoot. In fact Welles only appears in three scenes in the movie about an hour after it starts. And the only actual bits of Welles filmed in Vienna are when he approaches the Ferris wheel in the Prater and then departs. The actual sequence in the Ferris car was shot at Shepperton studios as was the doorway face reveal and amazingly the entire chase in the sewers which took place in sets created at Shepperton Studios by Alexander Korda's brilliant designer brother Vincent Korda.

So witty and clever - I mean your video. As for The Third Man, the greatest film ever made. I first saw it about 40 years ago. An unforgettable experience of emotional intensity. And that amazing music, perfectly deployed. Now I am no longer a young man, but an old man. In the meantime, I've had extensive experience working in Vienna. I never tried to locate the sites of any of the scenes. But I'm so glad that you did. How wonderful to see the amazing continuity between the world of the late 40s and the Vienna of today. The film continues to have exactly the same effect on me.

That was excellent, thank you. I spent an afternoon on an Inter-railing holiday in, I think, 1991 wandering around central Vienna trying to find the sewer kiosk Harry Lime disappeared down ("It wasn't the German gin..."), only to read later that it was a prop!

The Third Man has always been one of my favourite films. When I did my National Service in the Australian Air Force, I had a friend who was one of identical triplets. He loved to proclaim “i’m the Third Man!” The first time I visited Vienna I felt I had to ride in the Reiserad, the big wheel although I am normally afraid of heights. It didn’t matter, I was up there imagining I was with Harry and Holy.

You realize what a master was Anton Karas when anyone else tries to play his theme, always technically exposed and completely missing the menace of the original piece.

@jwmc413 жыл бұрын
@@rolfeerictikkala5643 I was talking about this rendition of the theme. I’ve listened again and it sounds even weaker than before, including emphasizing a note that Karas kept quiet and which turns the powerful into the mundane (how little it takes!).

It is true that different players will bring out different features of the music, but this does not make them inferior players. I know what you are referring to when you speak of "menace", but, in fact, this feeling is a matter of cinematic context. The piece itself is charming, and is hardly menacing or an expression of menace. It is the use of key excerpts, modulated by volume, over dramatic scenes, with sudden cuts in a suspenseful context that creates the feeling of menace.
@LewisSkeeter Жыл бұрын
@@larrybaby9377It's hard to know if the unease, the sense of menace, is in the music or injected into it by the brilliance of the film. That uncertainty is part of its haunting quality.

Very funny video. You had a great way of presenting it. I managed to locate several locations on my first trip to Vienna 10 years ago much to my partners annoyance as she hadn't seen the movie. Even though she lived there for about a year, as a result of location searching I took her to places she hadn't been (whiich she did appreciate), such as the church where part of the chase scene was and the place where cat snuggles up to Welles' legs. You showed me some new places. Maybe next time I'll go visit them. Thanks.

Charming, witty, unique short doc on The Third Man. You forgot to mention though that Orson Welles' scenes in the sewer were not shot in Vienna. Welles took one whiff and said no thanks. He told Reed and Korda he would only film his sewer scenes on a set so they constructed a partial sewer set back in London for Welles' benefit.

Technical note: While there is a monument to Mozart in Vienna's central cemetery, he is not buried there. He is buried in Cimetière Saint Marc, which is no longer in use. No one knows where his grave is, however, as it was unmarked and later Constanze, his widow, couldn't remember where the site was. So for the Central Cemetery they erected a lovely monument to Mozart, but he is not there.

Oh, how interesting, the Kim Philby connection! I never knew. Now I need to know more. Philby was a Marxist, but was he quite so open about this that he would have been able to share this episode with Graham Green, or anyone, while at MI6? Was this episode prior to Philby's recruitment by the Soviets? Thanks for a charming tour.
