When Aurora first sees the tree, that is beautiful. It is actually based on something psychologists know about us, that we are inherently attracted towards nature, we need it to be mentally healthy.

That's just a basic understanding of human beings. We've always been, from ancient times to now, attracted to nature. Whether it be artificial in building gardens in our backyard, or recharging our batteries by going for a hike in the great outdoors or planting trees along the street or creating parks within cities for us to enjoy. It's because we naturally belong in nature being the animals that we are. It's just that living in cities is more convenient and it provides us with most of the necessities of life like food and fuel.

I guess the criticism came from the ending Chris Pratt got. It would have been perfectly fine if it was about Jennifer forgiving him for condemning her to death but they turned it into some obligatory Hollywood two hot people so they must end up together kind of trope. And no one liked that. Chris Pratt's character in this movie is designed to be a horrible person but they gave him the best ending. He ends up with a hot rich girl out of his league

The way Mancuso is able to really help start the troubleshooting once he wakes up points to a big question I have about the movie. When Jim wakes up, he's told they will spend the next four months learning about colony life. So there's a plan to have all 5,258 people awake, eating, and doing things for 4 months. Why not break that group up into shifts (beyond the fact that it would mess with the “Adam and Eve” trope)? 120 years is 1,440 months. Broken into 4-month "shifts" that's 360 groups of 14 to 15 people. So, everyone's still being fed, watered, maintained, and feeling "cooped up" aboard the ship for 4 months, it's just spread throughout the voyage instead of all at the end. In the meantime, if something goes wrong (which is entirely possible on a 120-year-long space voyage), those 14 or 15 people who are awake are able to be alerted and to wake up anyone who needs to wake up to fix the issue. Wear and tear over that time are some of the first things that come to mind; but you could convert some of the cabin space you don't need (because only a few people are awake to need them) and turn them into spare parts storage.

@@London1869 actually, if you look quickly at Jim's pod display you'll see that he is a Mechanical Engineer. In today's world, that degree plus four years of experience qualifies Jim to be an astronaut. In this case, the ship should have woken up the chief engineer and after evaluating the problem he would have followed his procedures and woken up the appropriate manpower. The chief engineer would have seen that the ship's diagnostic system was offline and would have made getting it back up a priority. That would have told him that the hull was breached and pointed him to the damaged reactor control system. I’ve heard the theory that if they had started the movie off with Jennifer Lawrence‘s character waking up and not knowing that Chris Pratt’s character was the one who woke her, it may have just made this movie so much more interesting.
@Michael-dy2lb

It's a theory, but it changes the genre of the movie. As it is, the movie is a psychological thriller in a sci-fi setting. By being in Jim's shoes, we see he's a good person put in an impossible situation. He tries everything to fix the situation himself, fails, and eventually goes borderline suicidal with loneliness. He only wakes Aurora out of necessity to survive himself. And he hates himself for doing it. Now, if we see the action through Aurora's eyes, it becomes more of a horror thriller in a sci-fi setting. We don't know Jim is a good person, driven to do something horrible only in the direst need. We see him as an unknown. Sure, he seems nice and good-hearted, but all that falls flat when the truth comes out. So, yeah, it would be a very different movie. More interesting? Only if you enjoy the one genre over the other. I like the thought experiment of what it would be like to be alone a ship the way Jim was.

It's engineering common sense not to put the entire crew on hibernation for the entire 99 years travel time. Staggered hibernation schedule every 5 or 10 years would be better to ensure an awake crew is available at all times.

Can we please kill the "don't touch anything" joke in movies? Or at least have a movie where someone says it and the "dumb but capable" protagonist doesn't touch anything after it is said.

While we are at it, can we please also retire the 'speak English' joke in the movies, when the tech character is speaking is pretty easy to understand lingo, but the clearly overqualified protagonist still has to sound cool by asking him to dumb it down for everyone.

This movie frustrates me so much. There are so many great plot points here that are just wasted on Stockholm Syndrome. And there's barely any interaction with actual space. This is the first time the movie actually gets real.

Why wouldn’t they have an extra set of pods for 25% of the passengers. And they should have had someone awake. Like a group of 10 people that stayed up for a year at a time and went in shifts. Boom. Any issues like this you can fix them. Along with having a second engine worth of supplies. These king of voyages would be essential for spreading the human race

They actually explain it during the movie. The mechanism to get passengers and crew asleep is much more complex and expensive than waking them up. And since hibernation pods have never failed, EVER, and the ship is so incredibly safe, there's no need for even the crew to be awake.
