This video unlocked a memory I suppressed a long time ago. This movie gave me nightmares as a little kid. I remember watching the last half-hour of the movie and just being horrified by the idea of slowly transforming into a grotesque fish monster. It wasn't helped by the scene where the guy dumps water on the kid, forcing the transformation. At the end, I thought the kid was beyond saving and was doomed to spend the rest of his days underwater. Never again would he live like a human. Never again, will he see his family and friends, the only people he ever knew. But at least he gets to live with a hot mermaid. Oh wait, that's his biological mother.

As a kid I liked the unique parts of this movie, namely the protagonist being a boy since merfolk are usually in stories aimed at girls, and the electricity powers since at that age I just learned from Pokemon about water conducting electricity, so a merman having electric powers would make him pretty deadly. I wished the movie could have done more with those ideas and less with the generic school stuff.

She couldn't go on land. He turned when he was 13 and couldn't go back. He stuck not because of suction, but because his scales were sticky while rising out of his skin. She left him alone so that he could have a normal life before he started to change. Had she shown herself off she as well as her child would have been captured and dissected, which is also why it was a secret. She was just trying to keep Cody safe. Sure enough, his friend's dad tried to use him as bait and wet him down, near torturing him as he dried.

I remember really liking this film when I was younger. I too thought the premise was interesting especially with the human mom. She didn’t want her son leaving home so soon and I remember in the end of the film she was like “but you’re my son, I’m the one that raised you.” That really touched me for some reason.
@althrace-49 Жыл бұрын
I always thought about the story as being about adoption. Like a mother is separated from her baby son (against her will). That son is then taken in by a well-meaning couple. He grows up happy, unaware of his origins although a little different from his peers, but when he is a teenager ends up discovering the truth. (In this situation his merman-ness could be a metaphor for some kind of rare hereditary condition.) Eventually he ends up coming to the realization that while he appreciates all his adoptive parents have done for him he needs to learn more about where he comes from for his own sake. Therefore, the film ends with him going off with his biological mother, aka embracing his merman self, aka getting the chance to learn about a previously unknown part of himself.

The salt content in the ocean means lightning only fries things relatively close to the surface. Otherwise every storm would bring in a giant island of dead sea life, lol, but it would be a bad idea in shallow lakes and like... springs where the salt couldn't act as a natural obsorber for the lightnings current.
@RogueT-Rex84686 жыл бұрын
Alec Foisy they literally used the eel logic in this movie.
@Swiftbow6 жыл бұрын
Salt water is a better conductor than fresh water, due to the ion concentration, so... no. The reason lightning doesn't fry everything in lakes and oceans is because of the volume of the liquid. The electrical current is dissipated in every direction and dies out.

I think some writers are trying to make mermaid stories popular, but more often than not the ideas vary from meh to nah. Most of the time they take pointers from Mamma Mia, Titanic, or Twilight (this doesn’t include Thirteenth Year). The only hit featuring merpeople I can think of is the Little Mermaid. I’d be okay with a merman as a MC as long as the story was interesting.

Slasher Typ Because mermaids are one of the greatest things we as humans ever imagined. In fact, think about it scientifically; if merpeople live far enough below the ocean that we haven't discovered them yet, then they're capable of withstanding so much water pressure that a real-life Ariel could probably punch your head clean off, mermaids are fucking metal!

Chris Koraltan I think so too. It's not as bad as Doug described it. I liked it as a teenager and I still have a soft spot for it.

I suggest checking it out. It's a likable DCOM.

This is like somebody tried to rewrite The Shadow Over Innsmouth for Preteens. It's beginning to look a lot like fishmen!
