The Thomson Destiny, Cruise Ship Review - August 2011

Comprehensive review of the Thomson cruise ship The Thomson Destiny. The review includes the approach to the ship and checking in at Palma, a cabin review of cabin 3128, reviews of the facilities on decks 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. These include the reception area and shops, internet room, Seven Seas Restaurant, Clipper Bar, Casino Royale, Oklahoma Lounge, Can Can show lounge (including some of the entertainment on offer), the promenade deck, sports facilities, gym, lifeboats, views out to sea, swimming pools, Lido pool bar, Mast bar, Lido buffet restaurant and the Sky bar. This is my second video review of The Thomson Destiny, so this time around I have added a little more artistic licence and a little tongue-in-cheek satire to spice it up and make it different from the review I did last year.

I enjoyed watching this video. I have been on this vessel, way back in June/July of 1992. She was still the "Song of America" with Royal Caribbean. There was enough left unchanged to really bring back some very fond memories! Such a small boat by today's standards! The cruise was the 7-day Mexican Riviera.

Moss Travel TV She was built in 1982. Here in the US, Delta Airlines only recently retired their fleet of DC-9's which were built in the 60's!

David Anderson Very true David, however I believe that in the face of competition from much larger ships with particularly more luxury cabins, that the older Thomson Cruise ships are now lacking appeal to the British cruise market. Once Thomson was considered a budget brand cruise line, but these days it is more expensive than MSC or Costa. In order for TUI who own Thomson to compete in a congested cruise market they are going to need to upgrade their product - or reduce their prices. So far they have been slowly upgrading their cruise product. This ship still has life in it, but probably to an emerging cruise market - possibly in the Far East. I think it's Thomson days will be numbered now.

I sailed on this ship as "Song of America" in July of 1984. Not much has changed since that time. In the "Oklahoma Lounge" the chairs look like the same ones I see in photo's I have from 1984.

I was on that same cruise summer 2011. You could do a hell of a lot worse. In no way can this ship be compared with a car ferry. All the staff bent over backwards to make sure our stay was the best it could be. It was a very comfortable journey.

I was planning on doing, however I managed to find a lot better price for a one week Med cruise on the MSC Divinia, which is a brand new ship. Maybe Majesty next year.

Yes I agree that the staff on Thomson Cruises are wonderful. The ship itself is at the lower end of the scale though (and I am a fan of Thomson cruises).

Thanks for the review. It looks like a good cruise ship overall. I've never been on a cruise. I just cannot afford one. Too bad that they cost over $1000 US dollars, even though they usually cover all of your food.

Going on board for a fortnight at the end of august/beginning of September, if as good as the Spirit I certainly won;t have any complaints.

@debandmart The very cabin in the video is exactly the one you have said, outside, deck 3 and under the library. Never been on the Spirit, but been on Celebration once, overall I liked the Celebration layout more, however my wife prefers Destiny, so I guess it's horses for courses. My wife and i went on our first cruise on this ship, we sailed on the friday, by monday, the wife wanted to go home, by the wednesday, i had had enough. NEVER AGAIN. Docked at Tenerife, about a 500+ que for the taxi, we ended up in a roadside cafe, as it was less hassle. Put us off cruises for life which was a shame.

Just got back from the Thomson Destiny on Thursday, first cruise I've been on. I'm 14 though and if I'm being honest there is not much to do on the ship other than to watch the main shows, everything is catered for the oldies really (No offence if you're older, but they could do some younger stuff, too.) Anyway, I loved the disney show on the last night and could anyone tell me the name of the song that starts in this video at 25:50? Thanks :)
