Are you saying someone could just sneak a tropi mite into the US on purpose, and collapse the agricultural economy? Did you just give terrorists ideas?

Fun fact the honey bees we farm are very ineffective. 1 they not only have a 1 food sorce at a time and get move from place to place. 2 doing that helps move more and more mites around. 3 the blue orchard bee is 45% better at pollinating apples. 4 bumble bees are up to 67% better at pollinating tomatoes peppers and mangoes. 5 theres been multiple studys were a farms use no bees and no pesticides and let wild native one do it and they have up to on average 75% more food on trees and vegetables. 6 are farmed bees outnumber wild ones 10 to 1 we have to many farmed none native bees.

Side note: Honey bee do not have the best efficiency to pollenate plants. Some bees are more effective on some other plants. DW Planet had a excellent video called "Bee extinction" I highly recommend everyone want to learn more about bees.

When you say that "Wild bees are helpful pollinators but domesticated honeybees are crucial," you are seriously downplaying the importance of native bees. They are also crucial.
@derAtze
@derAtze 3 жыл бұрын
I hate the fact that everyone is like "ooOoO the honeybees, they are dying and we have to do something!" No. Its not about the domesticated honey bees. Its about the solitary wild bees, where a single one can pollinate as efficient as half a colony. With this video you are pushing the opinion that our honey in the supermarket is in jeopardy, but it isn't and never will. Its the wild bees that are.
@spacedoohicky
@spacedoohicky 3 жыл бұрын
I think there is an intention to help the entire ecosystem as they did bring up all the other species, and crops that have nothing to do with honey. It's just not emphasized. My take away was that helping the honey bees would help all bees because we can't really isolate mite control. It would have to be a nationwide effort. Also, I'm not sure we can say honey would never be in jeopardy by losing honey bees. Ecosystems in general are really fragile. Including ecosystems we preside over.

Why is about the solitary bees and not our honey bees ??
@derAtze
@derAtze 2 жыл бұрын
@@claudiareyes1759 There are many things going on with them. We remove dead wood from forests, they often nest there. We cultivate in monocultures, but they need diversity since they normally specialise on certain plants over the course of the year and if in some seasons they don't find theirs, they don't survive. That creates a spiral, since the other plants need the solitary bees to be pollinated, so they also don't survive. It decreases biodiversity and stability very very rapidly if you loose them

@mitchell archer@@billyjones6626 I did some re-reading on that topic: Book scorpions hunt the varroa destructor. So yes, a different kind of mite, which is nonetheless said to be the biggest enemy in the animal world to the honey bee in european countries. (at the moment) The german biologists Torben Schiffer (just recently) and Dr. Max Beier (in the 50s) wrote about this symbiotic relationship. Beier assumed the book scorpions were driven out of bee hives because of the increasing use of formic acid. Schiffer did test this in a few colonies and found out that bees would accept them amongst themselves because of their benefit. He even developed a separate housing attachment for the book scorpions, which is compatible with many industrial bee hives (in Germany at least). And maybe, the book scorpion eats tropi mites too... Someone would've to test that though. :D

Not wanting an issue to come over to your country is not the same as not caring about it affecting others. I hope that the CCP stays in China and doesn't expand, but that doesn't mean I don't want the Chinese people to have more freedom and prosperity. In fact I hope they thrive as people, as long as they don't go around terrorizing others.

@@hungrymusicwolf This was not a political statement. Let's not go there. And I do know that wishing something bad not to consume you is not the same as wishing devestation on others. But there is difference between being indifferent and hopeful. The statement that was made in the video did not even contain a morsel of compassion for the countries that are effected. Just to be clear, I was not expecting them to care about countries, but if they make a statement about one country, it's their duty to consider this as well.

The mites are not the problem. Every species in nature plays a crucial role for the echo system even those mites. Now why in the past were they not a threat and now they suddenly are should be the question these scientist should be asking. It might just be that it's the human's fault. We as humans have decimated most of the echo systems on this planet, and created imbalances, and when you start doing this well you get over populations of species and the collapse of others.
