For the number 3 in the #ClockReadingChallenge of 2024, we have “The Three-Body Problem” by Cixin Liu and translated by Ken Liu. This is an honest #review of the adult #sciencefiction novel and not of the Netflix series, although we’ll mention my airplane conversation with a fellow passenger who watched the series. This review contains SPOILERS! #threebodyproblem #scifi #fullreview
Please Note: I do not speak Mandarin. I’ve tried to repeat the main names from a “translator” site, but I’m sure I’m failing miserably.
Also Note: The book is not totally linear, and I didn’t re-read sections after setting it down each time I became frustrated with it, so I may have mistaken the order of eight-year-response from the Trisolarans in my synopsis. I’m feeling fuzzy about the order of that particular response now that I’m uploading the video… The point is it takes eight years for them (for the listener) to get a message back to Earth after they receive the initial memo to the universe.

You're doing great with the clock reading challenge. I recently watched The Three Body Problem on Netflix and loved it. Would like to read the books and see how they match up.

I saw a teaser for the show on a KZbin ad and there was a lovely young lady, whom I can only assume was Ye in her youth considering the lack of female characters in the novel, and she was dressed nicely...which threw me. Her life in her youth was not "easy." I'd be very interested in your observations! Good to hear you're enjoying the series!

Netflix version just skipped the plan discussion on Judgement Day. Viewers will think how stupid it is to cut a ship open for a disk. Why don’t they air drop people in. Actually it is well explained in both the book and Tencent show.

That makes sense...leaving out too much in the show might leave a non-strategizing viewer wondering "what the heck?" Most tv viewers these days need things spoon-fed to them. But sci fi viewers tend to be a cut above the norm...they might get it without a lot of exposition...

I'm afraid I can't put myself through that... To be serious, I really didn't enjoy the good stuff in the book enough to soldier through any more of the series.

Interesting reading of the book and author's note there. I enjoyed it even tho I don't think that's what the author is implying. I don't think he is talking about immigration or refugees. He is clearly talking about forceful capturing of lands and killing indigenous civilizations in the name of expansion and exploration that happened in the past, and even happening now in some areas. And you talk about organisations doing positive work, which is true, but I am sorry, they are teeth-less atm. USA can pull out of the Paris Climate change accord just like that and no one can say no. Infact most organisations have top same powerful countries with veto powers to block any proposals or laws made by other countries. I think we need more powerful bodies. Just my 2 cents. Ofc Trisolarians thinks that Earth will attack them . They got all the information about earth and its civilization from ETO, who themselves hold this biased belief. Also you yourself later described that there are pacifists on Trisolaris too, like the one who sends message to not respond again. Also I found it weird that you would call people who hold different opinions and beliefs as "sad people" or "poor people" whether you agree with them or not. Also in many east Asian countries, you call people by their surname if you are not close to them. I think you oversimplified Ye Wenjie's arc. Her father and mentor dying was just a start. Her personality slowly cultivated over time. Her reading the book Silent Spring about how humans are affecting the environment for progress(how spraying pesticides is considered a neutral action for humans, but for environment, it is no different that cultural revolution that she witnessed), while working in a group of forests clearers. Her meeting with Evans and other like minded people. Her rading more similar books during the time of the Cold War where so much human suffering ensued. Her meeting the girls who lynched her father and not getting any remorse or apology. "We are history!! It's a new age. Who will remember us, including you? Everyone will forget all of this completely." That was the last straw of her feeling guilt about betraying the humans. And she had hope multiple times. She refused to sign the paper on which her father's "group members" names were written. She would have had no problem in signing if she gave up on everything. After giving birth and getting the affection of villagers she lived with at that time, clearly affected her in a positive way. "The Tundra that had taken a hold in her heart started to melt." The changing policies after the cultural revolution, like equality in giving exams, etc. Page 191 "Sometimes I thought the life was precious and everything was important; but other times I thought humans were insignificant, and nothing was worthwhile. That kind of thinking infused the second half of my life."

I'm excited to see someone who read so much "good" into the character! As you probably gathered from my review, I struggled with that facet of the book. I found the segment where she "confronted" the remaining students who had questioned and beat her father to death in the struggle session rushed and emotionless. But I had rambled for about 90 minutes for this review and had to leave some things out...

想像下如果来一群三体人来到地球灭了美国,可以解释为了美国的民主自由吗?书中的概念和思想明显你没有理解。 请读完小学中学成长20年你可能会跟上这些想法。
