The best art advice I found was a tumblr story of this girl in someone's art class doing a very pink and glitter style art piece, which was not the teacher's cup of tea, and the critique the teacher gave her was that he didn't hate it. It was too safe. I'm butchering this, but essentially the teacher went on to say something like "There is no piece of art that will please everybody, so if you don't know who like your work, make sure the haters LOATHE it" or something, it might've been more like "create what makes you happy and don't try to please the people who will never like it by holding back". The girl came in the rest of the semester or year and just had the most avant garde bright pink and peacock-feather pieces since that, and the teacher was both disgusted and proud. So yeah, if you can't think of someone who will like what you're doing, think of someone who won't like it and make that person hate it, or create for you.

I needed to hear this, even though, deep down, we all know it lol. For me the biggest challenge has been my contemporaries, the creators I evolved with, spoke with and shared music and creativity with, have mostly all given up, moved on, and seem busy with other stuff, despite my belief in their massive talent. Eventually the dream of being a blip on the indie scene dies, then the dream of getting double digit likes on any one youtube video upload dies, then you reach this point where the years of being told you're talented start to feel almost like a betrayal. That coupled with feeling like a complete hack sometimes, and being in complete flow other times, with ideas that just flow and meld into eachother perfectly, and you'd do anything just to be able to get back into that flow state, listens and listeners be damned. And of course that just makes the flow state even harder to catch, like a butterfly that can teleport.

Honestly I often feel the same. Yet I think a lot of influential or just great artists/people in general where not well liked or thought of in their time. Vang Gogh, Nick Drake and such became known only after their death. I think Kafka met some similiar fate and even Mozart died poor as he tried being an independent artist. I think about the art that has inspired me to make my music back when I started. One artist in particular NMZS (German Rap) was a huge catalyst for me, seeking out this passion und really sticking to it. He got "famous" only after his suicide for example. The point I'm trying to make is: Creative People do what they do because they try to connect essences (of things, people, themselves whatever). Yet I think we'll always feel watched more, than we like and seen less than we'd wish. And once the art is disconnected from the living artist and has found its' bed in its' respective time it isn't about the artist anymore but about what they made and why they did it. If you catch my drift.

I think the mistake is seeing music as a way to get fame and recognition. The odds are so stacked against you that 99.9% of people with that ambition wil feel like they've failed. Just make music that you like. That's what it's all about.

@@robinr22 I totally agree with that, but for me that's not the problem, so much as online feedback is the only interaction I have with my music - I make electronica, chiptunes and breakcore/drum and bass, and have very few friends, and none who are into that sort of thing locally. Round here it's mostly metalheads and goth rockers if it's not r+b/pop/rap. I miss the messageboards and laid back style of the earlier Internet. Sure, there are still music comminuties about, but it all just seems to be about promotion and numbers. Having everything be mediated by a computer, a platform, and in most cases, a self-inserted, self-interested third party (or at the very least a capricious algorythm), is kinda dehumanizing and leaves me feeling disconnected from my roots.

​@@SquareWaveHeaven it's an interesting point. in divide-and-conquer kind of way i think it's way more fulfilling to have 100 fans in tiny community that have 10000 across the globe. and mey even be easier to achieve. sadly i don't really know how to do that without live performances, it seems like nowadays exist two extremities in music - liveshows, where everything physical, and you can have eye contact with everyone, but the music has no place to be nische since you'll just have too small of a crowd to fill a venue. or pure online, where even nischest of nisches can be filled with 100000's of people even if only 0.001% of general populis would like your stuff, but leaves you feel isolated. i think most reminiscent of early internet laid-back feel nowadays exists in delibirately tiny comunities. dunno, maybe key is small fandoms of obscure shit, lol.

@@SquareWaveHeaven that is difficult and I totally appreciate the desire to make connections through music. I'd imagine having someone like and respond to your music is a powerful thing, for sure. But for me, I'm only really making music for it to be something I'm happy with. Occasionally I stick something on KZbin but really just so I feel like I finished it. I don't care if anyone else likes it and I'm not making it for anyone else. Maybe it's easier to think like that - that, ultimately, it's music for you, made by you and so it's only what you think that counts. That said, just had a quick listen to your channel - I like what you're doing!

"Fuck this, Fuck me, and Fuck you" has to be the most punchy, direct, memorable and straightforward advice that I've gotten when it comes to creating. It isn't that I haven't heard these same ideas reiterated in other videos about the creative process, but that your way of explaining it is so condensed, streamlined, and convincing. This is like the positive version of the grind mindset. Im trying to bevone more aware of my perfectionism, trying to use it as a tool and not a detonator of anxiety episodes. Mostly because i tend to taint other people's effort with it, and getting angry when they dont see the things as I do, but im getting there. Life sure is a painful process, but as long as we let our errors teach us, we'll be fine... For the most part. Great video and great mindset.

But that has never been of any interest to me. I wanna make music with my voice. So I keep working with my voice. Videos like this keeps my spirit up on this long journey. Same here. I even paid someone to re-record my vocals and while he was technically a much better singer, the end result just didn't meet my vision for the song. At the end of the day, as ordinary as it is, I prefer my own voice lol. Pro tip: layer your vocals, it's been a game changer for me. If u align them properly and add effects, u almost can't tell. Also, try using harmonies, as well as background strings that play the same note you're trying to sing 👌

I'm with you here. Vocals are my definite weakness. If I compare my earliest music to current, Yes, I've gotten better and I will be the first to admit when I release a new song with my vox, that yes, I still suck, but it's me and that's the way it is. I think it ruins my songs, but that's OK. My wife and dog will listen to my stuff. Keep going my friend. Art is art. Why be like everyone else. Be unique. That's my mantra.

For me, making music started with DGAF. It was maybe 4th grade music class and the teacher was late or had to go to the office for something and I told my friends I'd written a song, so I sat down and started playing it. This was like the early 70s and I proceeded to play arpeggiated chords that had different rhythms and time signatures and I was happy with how it sounded. The reaction was that it was weird and didn't have a melody. I didn't care, I liked it. When my parents and siblings were out of the house, I'd put on records and work out the songs on the piano. In college, I took mushrooms and had to go lie down in my room because there were synths in my head and I knew as soon as I could afford it, I'd buy synths and start writing music to do the things I was hearing in my head. And I did. At one point years later, I took a year off and used my savings to write several albums worth of music. No one much listens to my stuff except some IRL and online friends and acquaintances who've heard it. I don't have the skills or networking to actively promote my stuff and the point is to make it. And there's a few songs that have gotten strong emotional reactions, some tears, comments from a college friend I stay in touch with who tells me they still play my albums, my boss and several clients who put my music on sometimes as the office music. I feel this meets my criteria for success, along with the fact that I still enjoy listening to the last 20 years of my music. And thanks for these videos.

I think people need to hear this, as so many people are stuck on their devices doing art/politics/music/etc instead of doing stuff outward towards their own communities. If that makes sense

Huh. I think I needed this. I've been agonizing over a video for months now, putting it off because "I can do better" or "I can add more". Rewriting the script again and again. "This video has got to be better" I guess partly because my last videos didn't do very well (in my brain) At some point I stopped even enjoying making it and pushed through anyways. Too stubborn to give up because it takes so long to make... (gamedev) I feel almost guilty for not uploading. Literally earlier today I realized I just cant keep caring about all of the little things, just upload and move on. I just wish somehow I could have seen this video 3 months ago lol
