It's a simple but brilliant formula! I know I'll be using it a lot.

I learned same "simple" trick on Guitar to allow room for other musicians/instruments in a Mix. It went something like this "1 note is a Melody, any 2 notes is a Harmony, any 3 notes is a Chord that defines the Harmony". Defining Harmony in this sense is the context, key signature, mode etc. So you start by playing a single line melody you like. Then you try and find a second line that harmonises your melody. Then you find the 3rd note that puts "the melody" in context both for you, but also the song, and other musicians to build on (Bass usually in my scenario).

People who say music theory is going to ruin them, do not understand that they do not sound as good or as much like themselves as they could. You’re not going to sound like the western music theory system, you’re going to sound like a more intelligent you! It’s not music law, but these are real ways that the intellect is able to communicate with the language of music. If you’re still skeptical, don’t just study the western system! Hindustani music is so complex and beautiful, and isn’t based in our western system. Music is the language of the heart and soul of course, but the mind needs to teach the body how to speak!

All I could think of while watching is the musicians from the 70s and 80s and what they would have done with the Wavestate. The Beatles used a Melotron which is huge. Rick Wakeman used many synths and a Melotron as well to get the orchestra sound.

Funny! Whenever the question "What would you do if you could time travel?" comes up, my answer was always, "I'd tell the young Beatles that they could use my synthesizers if I could be in their band." -_Daniel_

Good video. Yes, theory is only harmful when thought of (or worse, taught) as "rules". That's the tail wagging the dog. As long as the ear is in charge, theory is helpful to understand why something sounds good so we can do it again in other contexts.

interesting thought that knowledge would ruin creativity. Perhaps it's the Dunning Kruger effect at play here. Maybe it's not that you're creativity isn't stifled by knowledge, but your self-awareness of your own limitations that diminishes creativity... anyways, great tip on the 3 note limitation! The Korg Volcas are great for this as they only allow 3 note polyphony

About music theory, learn all you can and then forget it. Ornette Coleman I think that was.

can the Daniel vs Mitch vs Jacob sequencer add-on game be far behind? edit: always thinking of ideas for more synth-clips. Is there enough interesting technique involved to do a segment on cooking "portamento mushroom glide soup"? I was working on sound sets and i keep stalling on the first x-50 combi synth preset: a huge synth with huge glide. huge fun, huge distraction. Another idea might be the fun world of foot control. I have been exploring that for years, initially so i could play ambient guitar with synths, but now also for making my huge wall of sound live. there is the 12-step which does really cool things, and footboards like the studiologic, and multiple sustain pedals and thee olde jordan rudess program change pedal. guitar pedals can be down there too, like a wah.

This is a great way to break out of the tyranny of music theory. Want interesting modulations? Throw your fingers at the keyboard and see what you get. I think the problem with music theory is people look at it as rules they have to follow. What it really does is teach you how to do things with other people that are more harmonious. It gives you a means of automatically doing things that sound a certain way. Want to make a major triad anywhere on your instrument in any inversion? Music theory is a good way to get there. Want to play the same chords all the time on your guitar? Skip the theory. One little 6 month course at your local community college can give you a wealth of music tools you'll use for the rest of your life.

If one thinks of music theory as only descriptive rather than prescriptive, how can it hurt? Anyway, I love this "Three Note Secret" video. Using this simple formula you're bound to create some interesting chords, and you can always leave it to somebody else -- some know-it-all music theory buff -- to attach labels to them, right? You're just out there tickling the Organ of Corti.

This highlights the primacy of voice leading and counterpoint. We’re so obsessed with tertian harmony that we forget that chords are made up of individual pitches that have to move to connect chords. I’m sooooo bored of how the vast majority of pieces I hear are seemingly completely structurally controlled by the harmony; everything is the same harmonic rhythm the entire piece (usually 1 chord per bar or a phrase will end on a chord and sit there for 2 bars before going back to the top of a little 4 chord loop) with some lame, indistinct melody shoehorned in on top. I have to imagine the things that get stuck in our heads most often are good melodies, not chord progressions. Even just three notes treated as interdependent lines, as in this example, opens us up to a world that is so much more dynamic and free than “chord-chord-chord-chord chord2-chord2-chord2-chord2 chord3-chord3-chord3-chord3 chord4 repeat.”
